Meet Frank N. Stein.
Frankie is a shambling amalgam of body parts, street smarts and a broken heart. Although spliced together in a lab, Frankie is somehow more human than most of us could ever be. He's got the face of a monster, the brain of a detective and the soul of a poet. The only thing the big lug is missing are his vocal chords. Yet even though he can't express his thoughts verbally, Frankie still has a unique way of communicating: with his fists!
Frankie eeks out a living as a private eye on the streets of MonsterTown, a city as cut and pasted as Frankie's body is; a place where all the fictional characters in the world exist. Fairy tale, superhero, mythical beast or a background character in someone else's story, there's a good chance you could bump into any or all of them while waiting at a crosswalk. And when you do, chances are they've probably got a secret. Or a problem. Or something they need a little help with.
Luckily, for a few dollars and a milkshake, Frank N. Stein might just find a solution.
FRANK N. STEIN: PRIVATE EYE is a 48-page graphic novel presenting four tawdry, terrible tales ripped from the mean streets of MonsterTown. Each story is told within a different genre and the approach to the writing and art changes, sometimes radically, to fit each individual tale.
First up, we've got "A LIFE IN THE NIGHT," a lush little black and white snapshot of a case gone wrong for Frankie. Dizzy dames, heartache, betrayal and revenge plus a (literally) shocking ending, all told in the finest detective film noir tradition.
In our second story, "A STRANGE VISITOR," we shift into more super-heroic territory as Frankie stumbles across a strangely familiar spaceship rocketed to Earth from a dying planet several galaxies away. He's not sure what to do with the lone, infant survivor inside the ship (although the kid looks pretty super!) but when a kindly couple from Kansas with a touch of the ol' baby fever arrives, all bets are off!
Third at bat is a little ditty we like to call "THE SAILOR MAN." On a cold, rainy night in MonsterTown, Frankie encounters a mythical sailor with a fondness for Spinach, a broken heart, and a desperate secret regarding his long, lonely search of the seven seas to find his missing love.
And finally, in "A RED HOT MESS," Frankie takes on a case that involves a beautiful belle with a fondness for red riding hoods, her missing grandmother, a lonely woodsman and a big bad wolf. As the clues begin to pile up, what at first seemed to Frankie to be nothing more than a standard missing persons case is revealed to be a fairy tale most grim.
In addition to stories, we've also got pin ups (see below) by Dev and Keith and well as some special guest stars who have contributed their time and energy to class up this joint!
First up, comic industry veteran and test tube baby ANDY SMITH joins the party!
Next up, legendary mythical creature and Marvel and DC artist KEVIN WEST joins the fun with his own take on Frankie's hate/hate relationship with Talbot, otherwise known as The Wolf Man!
And last, but certainly not least, everybody's best friend (and a fictional character himself) TOM NGUYEN joins the party with this scintillating shot of Frankie's true love, his former Bride!
We're not going to spoil anything but there may be a few more guest stars popping up before the party is over. Just wait and see!
Let's talk about the rewards for a second. Aside from the original artwork, it stands to reason you guys would want to see some of the items you may decide to claim as your own. So first up, here's the Young Heroes In Love promotional poster that we produced for DC back in the day. Only TEN of these available!
Super-rare 90's promotional posters aren't your thing? Well, if you don't like walking around bare-chested (and if you do, we're not judging!), here are the t-shirt designs we've come up with for all of you to proudly wear!
Are you less of a graphic, giant-head person and more into logos? Then perhaps our second t-shirt option might play more in your court...
We'll be unveiling other rewards, both large and small, over the course of the campaign so please check back if nothing immediately grabs you. And remember, you can always modify or change your pledge at any time!
Our initial funding goal of $7000 for FRANK N. STEIN: PRIVATE EYE is intended to be used for the printing, rewards, and delivery of the graphic novel but much like Victor Von Frankenstein (AKA '"Pops"), we also have mad dreams and plans we're hoping to bring to life.
Our ultimate goal with this project is to transform Frankie from a 48-page softcover into a 64-PAGE HARDCOVER COLLECTION that you'll be proud to display on your bookshelf and show off to your friends. How are we going to fill those extra pages? Glad you asked!
First and most importantly, all the material for the initial 48-page softcover, all 4 stories and pin ups, are COMPLETED. Written, penciled, inked, colored and lettered. We're ready to go to press the day this campaign ends. But...we've budgeted some extra time to produce MORE original content for the 64-page edition.
We've got fun stuff like activity pages (How to Draw Frankie! A puzzle page including the world's grimmest word search), more to-be-announced pin ups by guest creators, and finally, another original 10-PAGE STORY entitled "RIVERDALE JUMP STREET" we're planning on including. In our stretch goal story, Frankie goes undercover in the 12th grade to investigate a shocking murder at a quaint, all-American high school. And in a town called Riverdale, it doesn't take a detective to figure out who he might run into...
Risks and challenges
To propel us to our ultimate goal, we'll unveil new reward levels to go along with our stretch goals as they're unlocked. So much fun stuff planned for all of us to enjoy together, just wait and see!
In all sincerity, we've done everything possible to make sure there's no delay in this project, up to and including FINISHING IT before unveiling this campaign. However, we need to acknowledge that acts of god happen and life can throw a wrench into even the best laid plans of mice and Dev. But please know we've done everything we possibly can to minimize the chances of this project running late.
FRANK N. STEIN: PRIVATE EYE is a labor of love for Dev and I. We've had nothing but fun playing with different genres and pulling together a project that reflects our love for the comic book medium. We know you'll love it just as much as we do and THANK YOU for taking the time to check it out! Stay tuned for more surprises, rewards and fun over the course of this campaign!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
