October 15 - October 19, 2013
HONK NYC! is THE after-party to Somerville, MA's unprecedented HONK! Festival of Activist Street Bands.
A five-day musical explosion, the 2013 HONK NYC! Festival will showcase over 12 groups from New York, Chicago, Austin, London and Rio de Janeiro.
HONK NYC! celebrates the music of the global street. Performances will be presented in NYC streets, parks, on the Staten Island Ferry, in public schools, concert halls, art galleries and museums.
An international convergence of musicians and dancers, HONK NYC! has been introducing New York City audiences to artists from across the U.S. and Europe annually since 2007.
This year, the festival expands its reach to receive two acts playing in New York FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER: London, England's Perhaps Contraption, and Os Siderais, from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
HONK NYC! welcomes back two national favorites of the marching band scene in 2013: Chicago's Environmental Encroachment and Austin's Minor Mishap Marching Band.

More than twenty performances will be given during the festival. Artists will appear nightly, at art spaces such as Littlefield and Gowanus Ballroom, in Brooklyn, and popular East Village venue Drom. The 2nd Annual Cavalcade of Pomp, HONK NYC!'s night of five simultaneous and convergent parades, returns again in 2013, a mobile pageant of music and spectacle on Manhattan's Lower East Side.
HONK NYC! is proud to include a new component to the festival this year: HONK NYC! in the Schools and KIDS HONK! at HONK NYC!
Working in conjunction with local educators, HONK NYC! will send bands into four partner elementary and pre-schools in Brooklyn and Staten Island, where the educational initiative made its debut last year at the Staten Island Community Charter School.
On Saturday, October 19, the festival closes with a kids instrument building workshop, "Instrument Petting Zoo" and performance at Children's Museum of the Arts in lower Manhattan.
Why Kickstart for HONK NYC!?
In previous years, HONK NYC! has taken all monies earned through door entry fees and divided it equally amongst the number of musicians/acts playing the festival: anywhere from five to ten bands with 10 to 15 members each. In 2009, this averaged $12 per person, per set. Participating artists used these very modest amounts to cover travel expenses getting to the main HONK! Fest in Somerville and then onward to NYC.
This year, HONK NYC! aspires to offer real assistance to visiting artists, to ensure they have a great experience playing in New York City. Funds raised through this campaign will go towards the following expenses: travel costs, hospitality, visas fees, housing.
Another vital element of HONK NYC! is the audience. HONK NYC! is dedicated to offering festival attendees a spectacular show. No matter where the location inside or out, HONK NYC! provides a unique opportunity for New Yorkers to hear some of the most exciting, accessible music made today: hands can't stop clapping, feet can't stop moving, smiles can't hide. In order to bring New Yorkers the best event possible, HONK NYC! Kickstarter earnings will be utilized to cover production costs such as marketing, permitting, and equipment rental, to ensure our artists sound and look great in front of substantial crowds.
Lastly, HONK NYC! is dedicated to compensating local acts with a small stipend during the festival, as local musicians incur travel and production expenses of their own participating in HONK NYC! In past years, NYC bands have often donated their own door take to visiting bands, eating their own costs to play the festival.
The 2013 HONK NYC! Kickstarter campaign aims to enable some budgetary breathing room so that everyone can be sure they have a ride home at the end of the gig.
About HONK NYC!
HONK NYC! is one of four spin-offs of the Boston-area HONK! Festival of Activist Street Bands, a summit of more than thirty such ensembles taking place annually over Columbus Day weekend.
Founded in 2007 by members of Hungry March Band, HONK NYC!, like its sister festivals, honors the creative movement of politically active, socially minded, and musically diverse professional and community-based street bands working in the United States, Europe and South America today.
Risks and challenges
Presenting a multi-day arts festival in NYC is no small endeavor.
HONK NYC!'s resilience over the past six years is due as much to the passion of its producers as it is to the power of the community of artists, activists, and neighbors supporting it. They are the backbone of this festival, and have committed to working as hard in 2013 as they have in years' past to make the dream of HONK NYC! a reality.
In 2013, HONK NYC! desires to grow. This can happen with your support.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
