      Hey Jamie,

Here are my quick and dirty thoughts…

We made a budget for the kiln and put it on the page, so everyone understood how the money would be used and why our goal was set for 15k. It might be helpful to say a little more about the expenses involved in publishing, so people understand the effort you are undertaking and the need for the $ goal.

Target audience is also important. Do you know how many people you are planning to send it to roughly? I think we directly emailed 900ish people, and 95% of the donations we got were friends and family or acquaintances. Altogether 200 people contributed. We had very few donors that didn’t know us directly. Perhaps you already have an audience in mind that would be vested in this book pretty significantly?

The tricky thing about KS is that it’s all or nothing. We needed 15k, and basically calculated that we were pretty sure we could get 12k, and decided that we were willing to front the shortage at the end of the campaign if needed. This might be something to think about in setting your $ goal… If you raise 17k, could you put in the 10k?

Did you consider a video of any sort to say a bit more about the book and/or the project? It’s a heavy lift, but maybe worth it. We approached our campaign trying to get people to feel connected to what we were trying to do and why. Thinking about why people give, trying to make it relatable, and perhaps inspiring in some way.

We also looked at a bazillion KS pages of both successful and unsuccessful campaigns to try to figure out what did and didn’t work. A lot of KS campaigns are about presales, and that was different than what we were doing. But I’d suggest looking at some similar projects and getting a lay of the land might be helpful. Maybe this page…

I’ll let you know what else comes to mind. And I’d be happy to get together and talk through any of the nuts and bolts that might be helpful. I’m excited for y’all though! I’ll buy a book!!!

About

This amazing 1922 children's-book-for-adults was written by Ralph Bergengren and illustrated by Tom Seidmann-Freud. It recounts ten of David's dreams, each with its own color illustration.

The stories have the familiar unfamiliarity of our own dreams. Each chapter reflects details of young David's life in the 1920s and alludes to a child's struggle to understand the the world around him and his place in it. The dreams exhibit gleeful wordplay and a joyous freedom from the rules and logic of the waking world, but have darker undercurrents of melancholy and bittersweet contemplation.

Ralph Bergengren (1871-1947) was a essayist, humorist, critic, and children’s poet. Tom Seidmann-Freud (Sigmund Freud’s niece) was born with the name Marta in 1892. She was raised in Berlin and attended art school in London. Her surreal, dreamy, folk-arty style involved outlining simple illustrations with ink and filling them with watercolors.

Risks and challenges

We are a small (two woman) publishing firm in Asheville, North Carolina. We met while working for Bright Mountain Books, a local publisher that has since closed. We founded our publishing company to keep a few Bright Mountain Books titles in print and to allow us to scratch our own book-related itches. David the Dreamer is our first Spanner Books project.

This book is beautiful and much of its beauty comes from features that are expensive to produce: a hard cloth cover with gold foil, four color images inside. We will print it with a local Asheville printer so that we can ensure the quality we want and so that we can support a business in our community.

By pre-selling the book, this Kickstarter project allows us to produce the book for a modern audience while removing our financial risk.
