About

Components:

Sole Cutter: The Sole Cutter bit along with your power drill is specially designed to cut a perfect size hole for the Sole Opener insert. The depth stop collar will automatically limit the depth of your cut. The collar is reversible to adjust for a shallow or deep shoe tread.

Sole Checker: Use the Sole Checker to measure the thickness of your shoe sole. The color indicator will let you know if your sole is thick enough to install a Sole Opener.

Soul Opener Insert: The Sole Opener Insert is the heart of the Sole Opener System. The insert is constructed of rugged plastic with a stainless steel insert. The outside of the insert is threaded to make installation easier and to ensure a solid grip to the sole of your shoe.

Sole Insert Tool: The Sole Insert Tool acts as a screwdriver to install and properly align the insert into your shoe.

Additional Kit Contents: In addition to the items listed above, the Sole Opener kit also includes a single use epoxy packet, a mixing cup and stick, and a full set of installation instructions.

Additional Shoe Kits: After the completion of the Kickstarter campaign, additional shoe kits will be available for purchase on our website. These kits will include a Sole Opener Insert along with an epoxy packet, mixing cup, and stick.

Project Background

Sole Opener was the brainchild of Brett Epstein and here's what he has to say about it:

Sole opener was conceived nearly 10 years ago after purchasing a pair of sandals with a built-in bottle opener. Although a novelty, I thought the marriage of 2 completely different concepts into 1 package was genius. I would be out with friends and someone would ask for a bottle opener and if I happened to have my sandals on, I was the hero. Every time it become a topic of conversation. I started wondering how cool it would be to have bottle openers in all my shoes and then the idea hit me. How cool would it be if I could install a bottle opener in my shoe. The idea was sketched up in my invention book and sat there for years. I always wanted to develop the product but was always puzzled by how I would fund it and get the word out. Then along came affordable 3D printers and KS and all my problems were solved.

Our first prototypes were completely 3D printed, including the opener tab. It worked but we were worried about durability so we moved to a 3 piece design. The 3 piece design features a super durable stainless steel opener encased in 2 pieces of rugged plastic. The finished product is clean looking and durable. After several iterations and optimizations we ended up with the design that you see today. We will continue to improve the product as we move into production, but the concept will remain the same: a durable, discreet bottle opener insert than you can install into almost any shoe or any other object you can dream up.

Meet the Team

SAF Engineering was formed as a creative outlet for six friends and engineers to focus on developing our ideas from concept to creation. Located in South Florida the six of us have a combined 50+ years of experience in the product development, mechanical and aerospace engineering fields. We understand the challenges faced in designing and manufacturing products while holding to strict schedules. Our team consists of experienced designers, structural analysts, programmers, test engineers, and project managers.

Sole Opener is just one of the many ideas SAFE has in the making. Sole Opener is going to be the way that we make a name for ourselves. Rest assured you will get a high quality product and you’ll see more of us in the future very soon.

Raphael Diaz is an aerospace engineer and the guy wearing flip flops in the sole opener video. You might find him on the beach kiteboarding, in a field flying around his home-made drone, or at home working on prototypes using his 3D printer. He’s also got some luscious locks reminiscent of the Cowardly Lion from Wizard of Oz.

Brett Epstein is a designer, fabricator and family man. He’s a Macgyver and can build anything out of parts in the garage. That's his Lexus in the video which has a 400hp Chevy LS1 under the hood and 2 infant car seats in the back. Brett is a designer at heart and has been keeping an invention journal since he was in high school.

Jesse Miller is kinda like The Fonz 2.0. He’s retro. He’s the construction worker in the Sole Opener video. He leads his own workout groups after a hard day at the office, has got a thing for old VW’s and chicks with tattoos. Oh yeah, did we mention he designs parts for jet engines?

Paul McCartney Mitchell, aka Cartney, is the lead analyst and app guru of the group. His parents were clearly confused as to whether he would be a musician or have a hair care empire. However; Cartney's name is suiting. He's the looker. Sometimes he looks like Barry Gibb, sometimes he's clean cut and dapper, and at other times rocks a mohawk. Either way, he once wiped out on a bike trail which has provided hours of entertainment via slow mo replay. Help get our project funded and we’ll post the video for everyone to see.

Ryan Pfister “Fist-er” has a resting body temperature typically keeping him 6 degrees cooler than everyone else. We live in South Florida and he regularity rocks fleeces and a space heater under his desk. Pfister has great ideas, some of which involve pranks and pyrotechnics and he engineers at the speed of light which gives him ample time to send out LOLCAT pics.

Joey Windle is a beer connoisseur, but he is also into healthy living and Hard Exercise Works. He is detail oriented and an analytical genius. Joey designs state of the art turbomachinery equipment during the day and rebuilds his '73 Nova at night. He is also into automated and sustainable farming and grows hair like The Wolverine.

Risks and challenges

We are finalizing the design of the Sole Opener to ensure it is made of durable and quality materials and will last as long as the footwear it is installed in. The core design is complete with several prototypes having been fabricated and tested in many different types of shoes with great success.

Our schedule commitments are taken very seriously. As with any new venture, we attempt to plan for any contingency, but sometimes problems are out of our control. Should we run into an unforeseen complications we will keep you informed, but we do not expect or want to let any of our backers down.

Sole Opener is being designed by a group of engineers with 50 years of experience between us in various fields that give us the skill set to be able to resolve any issues that may arise.
