Photos / videos illustrating versatility and usefulness of the TacTiClip (It's more than a money clip!)

(Note: See the "Will it bend?" video just before the Project Summary section for an "extreme" demonstration.)

Money-Clip:

Large TacTiClip

European Union Euro, Small TacTiClip

Holds all types of cards:

Your plastic (large TacTiClip shown)

Business card archive (small TacTiClip shown)

TacTiClips "scale" from minimalist "wallet" to "taking care of business" tool:

Thin and tight for a night out on the town (small TacTiClip shown), or . . .

Taking care of business (large TacTiClip shown)

Keeps personal, business, and legal documents together:

Tag and keep tabs on important documents (small TacTiClips shown).

Keeps your place in books and magazines:

(small TacTiClips shown)

(large TacTiClip shown)

Some more of the TacTiClips' many uses:

Travel companion (Titanium is metal-detector safe -- keep passport, tickets, cash etc. together and sail through security -- large TacTiClip shown.)

TacTiClips can hang easily in various situations to help you in your daily activities (large TacTiClip shown hanging within a briefcase).

Where are those business receipts when you need them? (small TacTiClip shown)

For the person who has everything :-)  (large TacTiClip shown)

Say goodbye to that carabiner! (large TacTiClip shown)

Where are my clip-on sunglasses?

Tie clip?  Wow!  Why not?

You can wear the TacTiClip eight (8) different ways as a tie clip, four (4) on each side of a tie, by having the inner "finger" showing or not (as above) and having the "opening" on top (as above) or on the bottom, when flipping it over  (Depending upon the size and thickness of a tie, you can use either the small or large TacTiClip -- small TacTiClip shown.)

And, for the ladies. . .

. . .the possibilities are endless!

And, the list goes on. . .What other uses can you think of?

Versatile, useful, and practical. . .

Make the TacTiClip part of your Every Day Carry (EDC)!

What's the approximate maximum number of bills that the small clip can hold?

This was a question from a potential Backer.  Here's the answer in four pictures, showing 22 US Twenty-Dollar bills held by the small TacTiClip, first singly, and then, in the last picture, folded over -- 44 widths of currency being held smartly by the small TacTiClip!  And, that’s not the upper limit. Thanks for the question :-)

Twenty-two twenty-dollar bills fanned out in a small TacTiClip.

Fan closed.

Outside of small TacTiClip shown with bills folded over.

All 22 bills folded over (44 widths of currency) and inserted into the small TacTiClip, and it's not yet at its upper limit!  And, this is the small TacTiClip.  Imagine what the large TacTiClip can hold!  The video below will give you some indication.  Hands down, in money-clip mode, the TacTiClip is hard to beat.  But, it's more than a money clip!

"Will it bend?" How resilient is the TacTiClip under stress.  Watch the "extreme" demo below and find out :-)

The TacTiClip is unique among clips because its open and glyph-like continuous design allows it to elastically deform under stress and then recover to its original shape.  Because of this, we say the TacTiClip "scales" easily to meet a wide range of requirements, from minimalist substitute wallet for a night out on the town to a taking-care-of-business tool to help you get through your every day.

Project Summary

Because of the TacTiClip's material and how it's designed, it can hold a wide range of thin materials of various shapes, in stacks of various depths, securely, and in an easily transportable manner.  Here's a partial list of what it can be used to hold:

  • Paper Currency
  • Plastic ID, access, credit, debit, insurance, membership, and reward cards etc.
  • Legal Documents
  • Personal / Business Correspondence
  • Personal / Business Work Papers
  • Business Cards
  • 3x5 / 4x6 Index Cards
  • Coupons
  • Receipts

Use TacTiClips as a:

  • Money Clip (cash only)
  • Card Clip (cards only)
  • Wallet (cash and cards)
  • Travel Clip (passport, tickets etc.)
  • with a Folder / Sleeve (various materials can be used [up to you] to sort and store contents for easy access, and shield from RFID "skimmers")
  • Clasp (keeping soft / flexible containers closed like paper / plastic bags)
  • Book Mark (use a small TacTiClip for this and the application just above)
  • Magazine / Catalog Mark
  • Clip-Hanger (as in the picture where it's hanging in the briefcase next to the pen)
  • Tie Clip (seriously, it's a cool tie clip :-)
  • Clamp (sealing something shut or holding something onto something else temporarily)
  • . . .and the list goes on (please, send us your ideas, and thank you :-)

We are seeking funding to bring the TacTiClip to market, first to KickStarter, and then to other markets.

Although our funding goal is $8,000, we're hoping you can help us raise more.  We're percolating, and ideas are poppin' like firecrackers.  The TacTiClip is just the beginning of multiple lines of innovative products made of Titanium.  Here's a partial list of the things we need to buy or have access to (not for this project, but for the next level):

  • Machines and machine time for the various steps in the manufacturing process.
  • Anodizing capabilities and / or services to help TacTiClips scream cool.
  • Laser capabilities and / or services to help personalize / brand TacTiClips for customers.
  • e-Commerce enabled website.
  • Graphic design to assist with e-Commerce website and marketing materials.
  • Channel marketing services to help put TacTiClips in as many hands as possible.
  • Intellectual Property attorney to protect same.

So, please consider pledging over and above your reward to help give us an extra "kick" in commercializing this endeavor.

All TacTiClip Backers are Backers as long as we're making TacTiClips :-) That means we appreciate you for helping us get "kickstarted" and want to return the favor by providing you a return on your investment so to speak.

You'll know before anyone else what's about to be released from the product pipeline on future projects, on or off KickStarter.  And, you may be invited to participate in new product releases in some cool manner.  This also means you're a preferred customer.  What, exactly, does that mean?  We haven't figured that out yet, but you'll smile when we do :-)

The KickStarter community will be invaluable in providing feedback on the design and application of the TacTiClip to improve its marketability and utility. And, we're looking for our backers to help drive people to this project, and then to our website after the project concludes.

We will not forget the Backers that help start and sustain our passion for design!

Our intent, therefore, is to establish an ongoing relationship with KickStarter and our Backers, as the product and others in the TacTiClip product family evolve and emerge, and as other products are conceived and brought to market.

Name / Concept and Product Line

TacTiClip -- What's in a name?

"Tac" is for tactical or tactics,

"Ti" is the symbol for Titanium:

Known as the "space age metal" and the "metal of the gods"  (Titanium was named after the "Titans" of Greek mythology.)

And, the "Clip":

Although the product appears to be just a clip, the possibilities are bounded only by your imagination.

Product Line

Currently, the TacTiClip product line consists of a large and small version.  We have more products in the pipeline.  Stay tuned.

The Design

Good design is about getting "outside the box."  When you're outside the box, you're in the open.  Open to possibilities.  This principle was applied in the design of the TacTiClip, with the result that the TacTiClip itself is open.

The open design of the TacTiClip frees the Titanium to express its inherent flexibility, pliability, and resistance to deformation under stress by allowing any stress to be spread through the length of the TacTiClip's glyph- or maze-like design.  This enables the TacTiClip to "scale" easily in accommodating one or many items within its grasp, and then return to its original very thin shape with no deformation to speak of.

Product Development Process (Pre-Production / Pre-Project Launch Phase)

Along with designing the TacTiClip, we had to engineer the entire product development process to determine the type and amount of material required to produce a certain amount of finished product in a certain amount of time with a certain level of quality.  This just a part of what's called "Design to Manufacture."  Just because a design is brilliant, it's no guarantee the design is manufacturable at a reasonable cost, and sellable at a reasonable price.

Production / Manufacturing Plan (Post Launch / Pledging / Funded-Status Phases)

As the manufacturing process for TacTiClips has been "wired" with the support of our manufacturer, from configuring the machines to finishing, and performing the Quality Control steps in-between the machines, we are now ready to schedule production runs in accordance with demand.

After launching the project, during the funding period, we will be monitoring the volume of pledges and rate of pledging closely.  Depending upon the level of pledging and the rewards selected, we will commit to the manufacturer (during late January) to more or less production runs (after achieving funded status) for the latter part of February.

As a control, we will modulate demand by capping existing rewards and pegging new rewards to April or beyond, as needed.  In other words, Backers that pledge early will, more than likely, get their TacTiClips in March, with subsequent Backers being able to expect delivery in April, or later, depending upon demand.

The bottom line here for our Backers is the manufacturing plan is very closely aligned to (1) the productive capacity of the manufacturer's machines to produce and finish TacTiClips, (2) the manufacturer's production schedule, (3) the timing of raw material delivery, and most importantly, (4) the commitment we are making to our Backers to deliver TacTiClips during specific months (March, or in April or beyond, as required).

Fulfillment Plan (Pledging / Funded-Status Phases)

Fulfillment starts before achieving funded status -- in anticipation of achieving funded status -- to ensure we can fulfill our Backer's pledge rewards as soon as possible.  This is in alignment with our manufacturing plan, where we are anticipating various "scenarios" we may have to adapt to, for which we are proactively laying the groundwork to be able to "turn on a dime" to make any and all adjustments that are necessary and sufficient to fulfill our Backers pledge rewards.

The whole point of the project is to put well designed and highly versatile Titanium clips into our Backers hands that are without manufacturing or finishing flaws and delivered in accordance with the month of delivery specified in the corresponding pledge reward.

That's our focus and everything about the project has been engineered with this in mind :-)

Conclusion and Request for Pledges and Support

With your pledges and support, we intend to create a new category of clip, a high-tech utilitarian tool with a sense of style that can directly support you in your daily life.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

1.The TacTiClip project is relatively low risk from the perspective of manufacturing, as the process is proven and straightforward, and the TacTiClip is a one-part product requiring no assembly.

2. We have a working relationship with a facility that has supported our prototype and pre-production development processes. We believe they have capacity to meet projected demand. If the demand for TacTiClips grows, order fulfillment may span a longer period. To mitigate this risk, we have identified overflow subs.

3.To ensure timely delivery, we will minimize design changes or additional finishes.

4. We are confident in obtaining raw materials in sufficient quantity as the manufacturer has established relationships with multiple sources of the raw Grade 5 Titanium sheet stock. We have also accounted for price fluctuations in raw material prices, and barring unforeseen circumstances, we are confident that the supply and price of raw material will be available and reasonable.

FAQ

  • Regarding initials, absolutely!

Personalization and promotion with the TacTiClip is planned as we ramp up to full commercial status, sometime after this first KickStarter project.

Our Backers will be first to know and first in line to take advantage of this option, once it becomes available.

We'll probably work something out that allows you to return your clips for personalization / inscription for a modest fee and shipping. Not sure yet.

If you know of a company that would like a run of TacTiClips with their logo, please let us know.

    Regarding business cards, some considerations:

Your personal business cards in a TacTiClip is a great idea for single short-term events.

Having your business cards in a TacTiClip for any length of time would result in wear, unless the cards were in a sleeve / folder of some sort, which is something we're planning on; but again, after the KickStarter project.

However, most certainly, the TacTiClip can be used to store other peoples' cards that you obtain at conferences or other types of events. On the project page, we have a pic for this, which is captioned "Business Card Archive," showing the small TacTiClip holding about 5 business cards.

The large TacTiClip is best for this mode of operation. I just ran a quick test and the large TacTiClip held 20 business cards very easily (cards and clip aligned lengthwise), but you would know that if you saw the video with the large TacTiClip accommodating 50 3x5 index cards!

    Thanks for the question!

    Best,

    Steve :-)

  • Depending upon demand, we'll cap rewards and start new ones with later fulfillment months.

We thought about combinations, and prefer to keep rewards to a simple few, and handle multiples of individual clips and sets through adjustments to pledge levels.

    Thanks for the question!

    Steve :-)

  • The inner part of the "ring" or clip is not as smooth-rounded as the outer part of the clip because it's easier for the tumbling media to get to the outside lines and corners than to the inside channels.

However, the TacTiClip is "pocket safe" meaning it will not cut you or go through whatever it's holding, except that the more you store in the clip, the greater the pressure the Titanium will place on the "bookends" of the TacTiClip content "stack."

For example, you can use 3-4 plastic cards like credit cards with the large TacTiClip with hardly any wear; but of course, since the clip is made of Titanium vice plastic, over time, using cards only, you would expect to see some usage wear.

Beyond 3-4 cards, you can expect more pressure and more wear, increasingly, as more cards are added to the stack (i.e., going from 4 to 5 cards would generate relatively more pressure than going from 3 to 4 cards and so on).

So, you can use less cards or rotate / flip "bookend" cards to minimize wear.

The best technique is to use cash, or something else as a sleeve / folder for the cards (or whatever is being stored), in which case you can store even more in the TacTiClip.

Cash works great. I use cash or Action / Reminder 4x6 Index Cards.

We are currently evaluating different mixes of tumbling media, and will, as much as possible, maximize the smooth-roundedness of the TacTiCip's inner channels by the time we start production.

    Thank you :-)

  • The clip is very resilient based on the design and that it's made of Grade 5 Titanium.

I have tested with up to 64 widths of material (25 US bills folded over, which is 50 widths of currency, and then 14 widths of plastic cards, paper, and card stock).

There was virtually no deformation to speak of after storing and removing the contents multiple times.

The TacTiClip will "scale" to normal use.

Hope to be posting a video soon of the "stress test" corresponding to the material counts above. [Shorter video posted on project page just before the Project Summary, replacing longer video posted originally.]

    Thank you :-)

  • For right now, prefer to keep things as simple as possible and do not want to introduce more variables into the mix (e.g., anodizing outsourcer, anodizing options, anodizing pricing etc.).

However, the intent is for the TacTiClip to have a life beyond this KS project, where anodizing would be part of the product line as an option.

Once-a-Backer-always-a-Backer would mean you would be kept informed of our progress in this area and would be (1) the first to know and (2) first in line.

Stay tuned for news regarding anodizing post project.

  • The smal TacTiClip can hold more than 44 widths of currency, either single sheets of currency, or 22 sheets folded over.

Please see the 4 photos on the project page that demonstrate this.

    Thanks for the question!

  • Scratch resistance is excellent from the perspective of making those that are inevitable from daily use being less or unnoticeable because TacTiClips are "stonewashed," literally washed with hard ceramic media in a "tumbler" for hours, which provides a very smooth, fairly non-reflective, and individually-unique "patina" for each and every TacTiClip.

    Thanks for the question!

  • The large TacTiClip is the one you want.

Also, when using it with 10 cards, you'll want to use cash (or something else) as a sleeve or folder to minimize any usage wear on your cards over time.

See the first FAQ for more information in this regard.

    Thanks for the question!
