Guitar Gods Playing Cards from Guitar World Magazine
A deck of standard-size playing cards featuring 54 current and classic Guitar World magazine covers.
Welcome to the first ever Guitar World magazine campaign on Kickstarter! This is very new territory for us, but we’ve always enjoyed a personal relationship with our readers and we’ve never been afraid to try new things, so we hope that venturing into the world of crowdfunding will be an extension of that. Please feel free to post comments—we want your feedback!
We’ve been publishing this magazine for more than 34 years, and we always take great pride in our covers: whether it be a photo shoot that we do ourselves or a classic image of Jimi Hendrix, Randy Rhoads or Stevie Ray Vaughan, we spend a great deal of time making sure that each cover meets or exceeds our standards.
With that in mind, we thought it would be a unique way to celebrate the history of the magazine by producing a deck of playing cards featuring some of our most iconic cover images that span our entire existence, from 1980 through today. And really, where else can you get a deck of playing cards with the world’s greatest guitar heroes? It’s safe to say that this deck is the only one of its kind!
Since this is our first campaign, we didn’t want to take focus away from the cards with add-ons like poker chips, T-shirts and tchotchkes. This project is all about the cards, the cover images and the rock stars that we all idolize, holding the guitars that we all covet.
If this campaign gets funded and goes smoothly, you can expect more card decks from us in the future—between Guitar World, Revolver, Guitar Aficionado and the various other magazines we publish, we have no shortage of rockin’ covers!
These cards will be printed by the United States Playing Card Company, and we expect shipping to customers to begin in February 2015. Thank you all—we appreciate your support!
Risks and challenges
The Guitar Gods Playing Cards deck has already been approved by USPCC for printing, so we don’t anticipate any delays with production, artwork or meeting our February 2015 shipping date to backers.
In terms of challenges, this was a very new and different project for the Guitar World magazine staff: none of us had ever designed playing cards before or spearheaded a Kickstarter campaign, so there was a very steep learning curve for us to get the project to where we felt comfortable enough to launch. But part of the reason for even doing a project like this is to learn new things and move our business into new territories as bookstores and newsstands continue to close their doors at an alarming rate, so even if it doesn’t get funded, it has still been a valuable experience for the few of us who worked on it. Of course we hope that the project will be a success, and that we’ll be able to take what we’ve learned and do something even more ambitious next time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
