GAU Studios and Devs Playing SwimSanity
Swimsanity is a 4 Player Underwater Brawler that allows you and up to 3 friends to compete in a large set of competitive and cooperative objective based games. You control a Mooba, an aquatic soldier equipped with a deluxe arsenal of tools needed to survive this underwater battlefield.
Swimsanity is a throwback to retro party games. The idea is you are able to sit down with a group of friends (online or offline) and play with each other for endless periods of time. We accomplished this goal by dividing our game into two components. Defiance contains our competitive game modes that allows you to compete in free-for-all or 2v2 matches. Alliance will have you and up to 3 other players working together to play in team objectives.
Last Mooba Standing
In this death match, each player will be given 5 lives. The rules are simple the last Mooba or team standing wins.
This capture the flag styled mode involves each player attempting to grab as many Damu Orbs and returning them back to his respective base as possible. Every piece of Damu returned, adds one point to your score. The team or player at the end of the game with the highest score wins. But be careful, if you are attacked while holding the Damu you will drop it. So out maneuvering your opponents is key.
Defend the relic of your Mooba in this competitive tower defense mode. Each player will have a fully built statue of themselves that they will have to protect as opposing players attempt to destroy it. The last player with his Relic standing wins.
Work together against endless waves of attacking sea creatures and enemies. Be sure you defend your teammates because each player only has 3 lives, and surviving alone in this mode is a difficult task.
The sea creatures in the world of Swimsanity are a deadly bunch. In this mode you will be running away from some of the scariest. Work with your team to get to the end of the level while being chased by an over sized sea beast. Every player gets one life, and if all players are eliminated the game ends.
Other Game Modes
Alliance will feature many objective based games such as the following.
- Escort the package
- Tower Defense
- Find all the Damu
- Defeat The Beast
Any brawler needs over the top power moves to engage true party combat, and Swimsanity does this and more by allowing you to Unleash Swimsanity. As you play any game mode, various actions in the game will add points to your unleash bar. Once your unleash bar is full you will be able to unleash your Swimsanity. This will be one of many different power up moves available to you. We wanted to make sure each one had different strategic advantages. So some will have more offensive strengths, while others may be more of an evasive or support strategy.
This will rain harpoon bullets from the sky down on your opponents. Use this to clear the screen if it is overflowed with enemies.
If you thought the standard mine packed a punch, the Mine Unleash has double the standard size and strength.
Freeze all opponents on the screen for a short period of time with an electric storm.
Become a large piranha that can destroy enemies and opponents on contact.
Heal all of your teammates and give yourself a sheild.
Force everything on the screen to a slow crawl.
Take control of a slow but extremely powerful armored turret.
Rush around the map with enhanced teleport and speed abilites.
Ride the back of a shark, what more needs to be said?
That's only half of the unleashes we have in mind. More have already been prototyped. Some are rough ideas. We plan to work with the backers to flesh out the rest of these incredible super moves.
With good communication, you can Unleash Swimsanity with teammates for perfectly timed blow to your opponents. It also gives all participants a boost in Unleash energy in order to be one step closer to Unleashing Swimsanity once again.
Mooba has a large arsenal a weapons he goes to battle with. Use these against your opponents to gain different advantages.
This is Mooba's default weapon. A rapid harpoon blast that does moderate damage to opponents.
An explosive shot that can be used to clear out large areas with ease.
An electric pulse that freezes anything it touches.
A trap that explodes when opponents cross it.
Attack opponents with a long stream of fire.
Players can also collect various power ups on the battle field to shake up the game.
Allows a full health recovery.
Dart across the map with maximum velocity.
Adds an extra coating of health to your Mooba.
Allows an automatic rate of fire with your harpoon.
Adds an additional teleport to your Mooba.
Release a piranha that relentlesly chases your opponents.
This is a chance power up. Collect it and a Shark rushes across a random spot on the screen. User Beware.. the shark goes where it wants.
Alliance modes pit you and your friends together against the dangers of Swimsanity, and one of these dangers are vicious sea creatures.
Chomp chomp chomp.. this piranha will chase you down relentlessly.
A basic enemy that lurks from the bottom of the seafloor.
At first sight this calm crab is not a threat, but scare it and it panics and unpredictably darts across the screen.
This defensive fish uses its hard shell while blown up to deflect projectiles.
The flexible backbone of this sea creature allows it to curl up then make a hard dash across the screen.
It has a strong grip and will look for a Mooba to latch on to.
This poor innocent seahorse has been strapped with explosives. One touch and they will go off.
The extremely agile starfish is equipped with 5 harpoon cannons. Catch it if you can.
A sleek manta ray equipped with two rapid fire harpoon cannons.
The alpha-predator will clear anything in its path.
Each stage in Swimsanity is interactive, and will create a new exciting experience each time you play.
This level is meant for beginners. A calm environment allows new players to get into the ease of the game without too many complications.
Deep down under the sea lie he mysterious water caves. And in these caves you will be playing against underwater geysers that will shoot you and enemies across the level.
This abandoned underwater laser-base is still operating just enough to create a deadly battle zone. Weave through crushing platforms and striking lasers.
The world of Swimsanity features strange locations, but there are few stranger than the Portal. In this stage there is a system of teleportation devices placed around the map. Use them to navigate and ambush opponents.
Replay ability is key
Our goal is to create the ultimate party experience. So now that you understand what Swimsanity is let us step back and explain how we intend to make sure the experience never ends.
Todays gaming generation always expects the ability to play online. And we intend to deliver a complete online experience for you to battle other players around the world. We also intend to make sure you can play Swimsanity locally. No matter if you are playing alone or have up to 3 joining players, we will also include offline sims in all of our game modes so you can enjoy the party experience no matter who is physically by your side.
Our game is built on a variety of different components. We plan on adding different types of objectives, stages, unleashes, and more via DLC.
The game will start you off with a smaller set of components. As you play more matches, you will be able to use our experience based system to unlock levels, game modes, unleashes and more. Even the ability to unlock options to customize game modes. The more you play, the more you get.
Where It Will Be Played
Swimsanity is currently in the process of being ported to Unity3D. The goal is to take advantage of the dual stick controls, and have the game released on PC and all major consoles. We are aiming for a Jan 2015 completion date for development.
The development team of Decoy Games is a tight knit group of 3. It was founded by Ahmed and Khalil Abdullah. Two brothers with a passion for gaming and a drive for development. The third member is the artist Chris Venne. With no formal training in digital art, Chris taught himself how to craft his natural art talent into video game visuals.
In college, Khalil registered for a flash development class. Little did he know that a simple project in this class would be the birth place of a dream to develop games. Impressing his professors with a simple flash game by the title of "Swimsanity: The Adventures of Mooba Jiver the Scooba Diver". The concept was simple. Play as a scooba diver who attempts to recover as much gold from the ocean while dodging the dangerous sea creatures. Khalil realized he made what he felt could be an instant hit. What he was not aware of was how to realistically expand this idea to a full fledged game. This was not until his brother had an idea..
Once Ahmed saw the local hit that was Swimsanity among classmates and friends, he knew he had to research the means to get the game on an accessible platform. At the time XNA was an up and coming engine for new developers. After realizing that the two brothers had the education to develop in XNA, Ahmed knew they had to add to the game concept. It needs to be multi-player. The sea creatures need to all have different attacks. The main character needs access to weapons and power ups to defend himself. The ideas kept flowing and the template was being built. The two definitely had the technical mojo to complete the task, but artistically the game would look like it was drawn by a 3 year old at best. The search for an artist started...
At the time Chris was between jobs not really sure what to do with his newly attained college degree. He knew he had skills and potential that were not being utilized. When his childhood friend Ahmed contacted him and showed him what they had accomplished with Swimsanity, the decision was simple. If Khalil and Ahmed could develop and complete the game design, then Chris would do what he does best and make the game look good. The team was assembled and ready to go.
Team Decoy Now
Over the past 2 years the team of 3 has diligently worked on Swimsanity. As anyone in the indie world knows, first time indie development doesn't pay the rent. All three members have been developing Swimsanity part time while working very involved jobs. Khalil a Technical Sales Consultant, Ahmed a Software Engineer, and Chris an Operational Coordinator all have to put in 45-50 hours a week into these full time jobs. Leaving only the tired night and weekend hours to develop. Through tiring but efficient development, the three have encouraged each other to further push Swimsanity to completion.
Team Decoy believes they can provide the gaming community with a true multiplayer brawler experience. But we need to be put on the map. We have limited connections with the gaming industry. We are all just gamers making games. In order to open up that door, we need your help. By supporting our modest Kickstarter goal you can show the industry that we have a strong backing by the gaming community, and also get some pretty cool swag in the process.
$40,000 - Initial Goal
Our initial intent to form a Kickstarter was to show the gaming industry that we had a solid backing. We feel this modest goal will do just that. Swimsanity will release on PS4, PS3, PS Vita, Windows and Mac.
Stretch "Backer" Goals!?
Is this a Kickstarter first!?!? Probably not but it's more exciting if we act like it is. Our main goal is to build a community, and Kickstarter is just the right tool for this. So more backers means more Swimsanity!
1000 Backers - Swimsanity to More Platforms
Our original vision for Swimsanity was to have it be played on all consoles, and this vision hasn't changed. Surpassing this goal will put us one step closer to this achievement. We will aim to release Swimsanity also on Xbox One and Wii U.
1500 Backers - More Content
As the fans continue to support us, we would like to support them back. We will be doing this by adding even more in game content. This goal will provide 2 new Unleashes, and a brand new sea creature.
2000 Backers - Even More Content
To continue off the last goal we would love to keep Swimsanity replayable. We will be adding multiple game modes in both Alliance and Defiance.
3000 Backers - Original Swimsanity to Mobile
The original hero himself, Mooba Jiver the Scuba Diver, will make his historic return from Flash back onto the Mobile scene. The simplicity of the original Swimsanity with a scuba diver collecting treasure and dodging menacing sea creatures still holds a special place in our heart. We want to show the everyone the origins of Swimsanity.
Risks and challenges
We all currently hold full time corporate jobs that may require 50+ hours of work per week. While efficiency and execution has been one of our strengths, meeting deadlines can be challenging. However, Team Decoy doesn't shy away from challenges. We take them on the only way we know how, and that's with incredible dedication and hard work.
The fact is we are not former directors of a AAA studio. We never released a video game to the public before. However, our inexperience within the gaming industry will not appear to be a weakness. Instead, we hope for it to be an inspiration for everyone out in the indie gaming community. From an artist who never attempted digital art, to 2 developers who only had experience with simple flash games, developing Swimsanity has been an amazing journey and we are proud of what we have accomplished so far. We are welcoming the backers of Kickstarters to contintue this journey with us.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
