Our vision is to create high quality alpaca yarn and other products (slivers/rovings, batts etc) from locally sourced alpaca fleece. We want to foster the relationship between the fleece grower and the end user. All of our yarn will have information about the farm/s the fleece was from. We will also be providing ongoing employment in regional Australia. We need a little bit of help to make this project a reality and we’d love you to be part of our journey!
Alpaca fleece is a gorgeous natural fibre to work with. It feels soft and luxurious, especially as a yarn. It is warmer than wool and allergy friendly as it is lanolin free.
Adagio Alpaca Mills will provide services to the Australian alpaca growers by producing yarn, batts and rovings from their fleece. Alpaca growers will be able to send any quantity of fleece from just a couple of kilograms to multiple tonnes to us to create a product for them. We will be able to process up to 18 tonnes of alpaca fleece in a year. We will also be creating an adagio alpaca mills brand yarn however this will be in limited quantities in the initial stages of the business.
The following photos are of our milling equipment being tested during manufacturing.
Project and Stretch goals
Our target may seem low for a project such as this, the reason is that the majority of our project has been funded though bank financing however they were unable to finance some small but critical items. The funds raised through kickstarter will be primarily used to set up our washing facility which includes a set of at least 6 baths for washing fleece, a hydro extractor, drying racks and filtering systems.
Any additional funds will be used to for the following:
- Set up the washing facility with additional functionality such as ultrasonic cleaning baths,
- Employ more people earlier in the project,
- Assist with capital costs of our milling equipment and purchase additional milling equipment earlier e.g. dyeing facilities or a quilting machine for making doonas,
- Ride through the unforeseen issues such as building a room around the spinning machine with heating and humidity control which may be required to reduce static for the machine to operate correctly.
Many people have been asking us how they can help us get started. We would love to bring as many people on our journey as possible and we need a little bit of help to get us up and going. Kickstarter is a great way to involve everyone. By pledging you will help us survive those first few critical months. So please help us out and pledge some funds! Every pledge makes a difference!
Who are we?
Adagio Alpaca Mills is the dream of Andrew and Nadine Hulme. We are consulting and electrical engineers respectively and parents of James, 3 years, and Xavier, 5 months. We moved to the Central West of NSW for work reasons 8 years ago and are now living the treechange dream! We have 9 acres and have fallen in love with our alpacas. When we decided to have yarn made from our alpaca fleece we were surprised to find out that there were no mills offering this service in NSW at the time. The more we looked into it the more we believed that there was a gap in the market and that we were the right people to fill it! We are currently juggling existing work and family life commitments and are very excited to be launching Adagio Alpaca Mills in May 2015.
Photos of rewards
The following photos are of our Follow-a-Fleece alpaca experience candidates. Please note that these rewards are the alpaca's story over the months until it is shorn then a quarter of the yarn that their fleece goes into making and NOT the alpaca themselves.
It is wonderful to know where your yarn has come from and a little bit about the animal and its life for that special garment you have knitted for yourself or as a gift. We want to be able to create a relationship between the growers and the end users and the Follow-a-Fleece alpaca experience is a fun way to do it! All of these alpacas are special to the growers for one reason or another. Most are males because the growers have special relationships with their stud males and spend a lot of time showing them and taking them to other farms as stud services. So sign up for one of these rewards to find out more about why Snoop is called snoop and see photos of her cria when its born or perhaps Mecurio's long lashes capture your heart and who could leave Just a Gigolo out of an experience such as this!
Very excited to announce that we have added two new Follow-a-Fleece candidates!
The ultimate alpaca fleece to yarn experience
Let us be your hosts for the ultimate alpaca fleece to yarn experience! This is a unique opportunity to design your own yarn! The weekend will start with a visit to our farm or one of our top local breeders to see an alpaca or two be shorn and learn about the shearing process and the different parts of an alpaca fleece. Then the day will continue at our mill with a tour and then we will take you through the whole process of making yarn! Pick the colour and feel of fleece you want, be part of preparing it for the process. We will show you how the mill works and assist you to be part of processing the fleece. Design your yarn, how much twist, how thin or thick you would like it and many other options! At the end you will be able to take home about 1kg of your yarn. Your yarn will be one of a kind! And better yet, you have been part of making it!
As part of the weekend you will also get to experience some of Orange region's finest food and wine. We have a few lovely places for the Saturday night accommodation picked out for you as well. We can't wait to show you some of our personal favourite wines and food available in the area. Dinner and drinks Saturday night will most likely be at Ferment, check it out at http://orangewinecentre.com.au.
If you want to co-ordinate to come with a friend or two or more, let us know and we will make sure you are booked into the same session.
We are really looking forward to showing you our mill, helping you design and be part of making your own yarn, more about alpacas (there will be a few cria running around at the farms, they are the cutest creatures ever!) and our favourite food and wine from the region. The only bit you need to organise is your transport. We hope you will join us for the ultimate alpaca fleece to yarn experience!
Risks and challenges
Our engineering background makes us uniquely placed to run and maintain milling equipment however the biggest risk for us is our washing facilities and challenge for us will be the art of making yarn.
With regards to the washing facilities, we know what we need to do however it was not something we were able to obtain financing for especially as it will require modifications in the initial stages to get it right.
With regards to the art of making yarn, there will be an initial period where we will have to practice with the equipment to get the quality and repeatability of our products right before we start processing fleece into products.
The funds obtained through kickstarter will enable us to mitigate these two issues.
