We’ve been having heaps of fun in the world of Interloper Films this month packed full with production! We journeyed to Canada to present A TOTAL DISRUPTION’S three CEA short films and a preview of our online course for content creators- Lean Content at the Vancouver International Film Fest, a creative and stimulating exploration at HATCH in Montana, a journey to San Francisco to capture the magic behind Veritas Prep, and did we mention more filming for the Russell Brand doc in New York and London during the launch of his latest book: Revolution! We’ve also been in the studio with some of the best, most provocative filmmakers working today on BYOD. Links to all the latest episodes will be at the bottom of this rich and storied letter!
Our motto seems to be “Never a dull moment”. We’d like to take a minute and share some of the adventures with you, along with our latest episodes from A TOTAL DISRUPTION…
Meanwhile, we’re getting so very close to releasing the first iteration of our ATD platform where you’ll be able to search our raw content down-to-the-word, watch our episodes, and take courses curated from the wisdom and insights of the founders, artists & entrepreneurs we’ve interviewed.
We’re happy to announce we’ve just released the founding story of LegalZoom.
“In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes,” Benjamin Franklin once wrote. As a small business owner, independent filmmaker and single mother I would add legal fees to this list. For centuries, the chances of getting professional legal help at an affordable price have been slim to none - whether it’s distribution agreements, wills, a divorce, starting a company or trademarks. With filed in the US each year, it’s more important than ever to have proper legal protection. Yet, any attempts by well-intentioned counselors to provide cheaper alternatives have been met with ferocious opposition from the established legal community in order to keep rates high and their wallets fat. If any industry was ripe for disruption, this was it. Read more of my blog at The Huffington Post.
More ATD Byte-Size gems here as well with our tech guru, Dr. Jagdesh Sheth!

21 YEARS: RICHARD LINKLATER
It’s been said that the first 21 years defines the career of an artist. Few directors have single-handedly shaken up the film establishment like the godfather of indie, Richard Linklater. From the groundbreaking SLACKER to his innovative BOYHOOD, Linklater has reached the 21-year mark and has unapologetically carved his signature into American pop culture. Get a raw and honest perspective on Richard through candid conversations with Ethan Hawke, Jack Black, Keanu Reeves, Billy Bob Thornton, Matthew McConaughey, Jason Reitman, Julie Delpy and others, and see their stories brought to life through hilarious animated sequences. With director Michael Dunaway.
PRINT THE LEGEND
3D printing is changing the world. PRINT THE LEGEND follows the people racing to bring this hot new technology to your home, documenting the “Macintosh Moment” of this revolution and exploring what it takes to live the American Dream. PRINT THE LEGEND premiered at the 2014 SXSW film festival where it received the Special Jury Recognition Award for Editing & Storytelling in the Documentary Feature Competition. Shortly after, on March 26th 2014 it was acquired by NETFLIX. With directors Luis Lopez and Clay Tweel as well as producer Steven Klein and Executive Producer Chad Troutwine.
Anna, Ole, Fred and Peter are four members of the Emergencies Team — or E-Team — the most intrepid division of a respected, international human rights group. Trained to deal with unfolding crises, the E-Team flies to hotspots all over the world as soon as allegations of human rights abuse surface. Then they get to work — gathering crucial evidence to determine if further investigation is warranted and, if so, to investigate, document, and capture the world's attention. They also immediately challenge the responsible decision makers, holding them accountable. Human rights abuses thrive on secrecy and silence, and the work of the E-Team, backed by their international human rights organization, has shone light in dark places and given voice to thousands whose stories would never otherwise have been told. BYOD with co-director Ross Kaufman (in the studio) and co-director Katy Chevigny (via Phone).
Advanced Style is a documentary that examines the lives of seven unique New Yorkers aged 62 to 95 whose eclectic personal style and vital spirit have guided their approach to aging. From a glamorous 81-year-old dancer from the legendary Apollo theater, to an 80-year-old owner of a storied boutique on the Upper West Side with a penchant for over-the-top accessories, to a 93-year-old West Village artist known for her colorful ensembles and iconic red eyelashes crafted from her own hair, these ladies offer their own unique perspective on overcoming life’s obstacles with style and grace, proving that age is merely a state a mind. Advanced Style paints colorful and intimate portraits of independent, stylish women who are challenging conventional ideas about beauty, growing old, and Western culture’s increasing obsession with youth. BYOD with director Lina Plioplyte and subject / Advanced Style Blog founder Ari Seth Cohen.
BORN TO FLY
Elizabeth Streb and the STREB Extreme Action Company form a motley troupe of flyers and crashers. Propelled by Streb’s edict that “anything too safe is not action,” these daredevils challenge the assumptions of art, aging, injury, gender, and human possibility. BORN TO FLY: Elizabeth Streb vs. Gravity traces the evolution of Elizabeth Streb’s movement philosophy as she pushes herself and her performers from the ground to the sky. Revealing the passions behind the dancers’ bruises and broken noses, BORN TO FLY offers a breathtaking tale about the necessity of art, inspiring audiences hungry for a more tactile and fierce existence. BYOD with director Catherine Gund and subject Elizabeth Streb for BORN TO FLY is live!
Here is a shot of myself and the directors of SHOWRUNNERS Ryan Patrick McGuffey & Des Doyle. The film is the first ever feature length documentary film to explore the fascinating world of US television showrunners and the creative forces aligned around them. These are the people responsible for creating, writing and overseeing every element of production on one of the United State’s biggest exports – television drama and comedy series. Often described as the most complex job in the entertainment business, a showrunner is the chief writer / producer on a TV series and, in most instances, the show’s creator. Battling daily between art and commerce, showrunners manage every aspect of a TV show’s development and production: creative, financial and logistical.
Desperate, broken men chase their dreams and run from their demons in the North Dakota oil fields. Local Pastor Jay Reinke opens his church to “overnighters,” men and women who have come to the region seeking employment in the oil fields. As Pastor Reinke fights for these men and women against growing opposition, he is drawn into the whirlpool of their troubled lives. The film premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival where it took the Special Jury Award for Intuitive Filmmaking. Jesse Moss worked alone in the field as director, cinematographer and sound recordist.

Hi Kickstarter Backers - Ondi is flying to Kansas city to give a TEDx talk, so we're posting this so she can rehearse for tomorrow.
Some quick Reward Notes: If your reward included the Amanda Footage Explosion check for an email from firstname.lastname@example.org. We sent these out a few weeks back, and want to make sure everyone got the email.
The ATD database has been pushed back due to the conflicts in Israel, as our web developers were based there. But we're hoping to get back to working on it very soon.
And now from Ondi:
This summer is flying by as we continue to work around the clock to craft the story of the mercurial Russell Brand and his journey from the penitentiary of anonymity to revolution. As Russell seeks to change the narrative I will be joining some of the top thought-leaders to speak on this very topic at TEDx Kansas City. TEDx KC is the largest of its kind in the world, and tickets have been sold out for weeks, but you can watch a livestream of my talk about Impossible Visionaries this Saturday, August 9th at 3:30PST/6:30EST. This year will feature incredible speakers including Larry Lessig, co-founder of Creative Commons and Mayday - a crowd-funding super PAC to end all Super Pacs (including his own). Mr. Lessig has also agreed to sit down with me for an interview for A TOTAL DISRUPTION while we’re in KC together.
PLAN A WATCH PARTY AND SEE THE LIVESTREAM HERE: http://new.livestream.com/tedx/TEDxKC2014
THE YOUNG TURKS INTERVIEW
As a perfect warmup for this talk, I was recently interviewed by the unstoppable Cenk Uygur, co-founder of The Young Turks, the largest online news network in the world. I don’t ever watch myself, but the people who saw this say it’s worth it.
If you’re looking for something to watch to tide you over until TEDx tomorrow, check out our latest episode of A TOTAL DISRUPTION, where we witness what happens when a key designer of the microchip applies all of his UX/UI insight into creating Pickathon, one of the most unique music festivals in the world. We enter the festival with world-renowned violinist and composer Andrew Bird -- and over the course of three days ATD has unparalleled access to the inner workings of this magical community that comes together to transform a farm into a work of living art - with performances inside trees, sails flying in the blue sky, 8 stages that go all day and night, and Chinese lanterns dance in the soft breeze like giant fireflies.
BYOD - This batch of BYODs is some of the best we’ve ever had. The three shows cover the 2014 Sundance Grand Jury Prize Winner, the Audience Award Winner and the World Cinema Audience Award Winner. Take some time to enjoy these treats.
ALIVE INSIDE is a joyous cinematic exploration of music’s capacity to reawaken our souls and uncover the deepest parts of our humanity. This stirring documentary follows social worker Dan Cohen, founder of the nonprofit organization Music & Memory, as he fights against a broken healthcare system to demonstrate music’s ability to combat memory loss and restore a deep sense of self to those suffering from it. ALIVE INSIDE’s inspirational and emotional story left audiences humming, clapping and cheering at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award.
Winner of the Sundance Grand Jury Prize, Rich Hill follows three teenage boys intimately, as they confront heart-breaking choices, with marginalized parents struggling to survive in small-town America. Despite it all, families cling to the promise of equal opportunity and a better life some day.
THE GREEN PRINCE
A Palestinian in Ramallah, Mosab Hassan Yousef grows up angry and ready to fight Israel. Arrested for smuggling guns at the age of 17, he’s interrogated by the Shin Bet, Israel’s security service, and sent to prison. But shocked by Hamas’s ruthless tactics in the prison and the organization’s escalating campaign of suicide bombings outside, Mosab agrees to spy for Israel. For him, there is no greater shame. For his Shin Bet handler, Gonen, there is no greater prize: “operating” the oldest son of a founding member of Hamas.

Summer is in full swing here at the Interloper/ATD headquarters. The Russell Brand feature doc is going around the clock, in multiple locations. I’m personally editing most every night until 3:30AM and every weekend, as that’s when the magic happens (and the quiet time to jump in full-force and tame this beast!) Sorry to those I have neglected. I turn into a hermit (or a terribly boring party guest) when I’m deep in a feature, with nothing but the puzzle rolling around in my head. As we’re editing these hundreds of hours of delicious footage into sumptuous crumpets, we will be sharing clips with you. There are so many fantastic and thought-provoking moments, it’s almost impossible not to fill even the cutting room floor with gold. So we will put them online. Sign up and get the short film/pre-buy the feature NOW to support us!
We also stay sane by engaging in company yoga and now a company-wide Nerf gun fight. The two activities, though diametrically opposed, are the perfect recipe for shedding the stress of the week!
THE LAST MILE
Earlier this month, an ATD team traveled up to San Francisco with a gaggle of bright young (and disruptive) interns in tow. Our mission was to film The Last Mile, the world’s first incubator inside a state prison. In this case that prison was San Quentin. The program, founded by husband and wife Silicon Valley investor team Chris Redlitz & Beverly Parenti, teaches inmates the skills to become successful entrepreneurs, and helps each one conceive and develop their own startup. Many of these men have never seen the Internet, or a computer!
We will create three webisodes for Wired Magazine, and put them on A TOTAL DISRUPTION too. From there we plan to expand the project towards a short and possibly even a feature. Having started my career 22 years ago in women’s prisons, and the last decade in technology – this project fascinates me to no end!
Here I am with Darnell. He described to me what he imagined the Internet to look like: "Well to me, it’s.. a dream or imagination where you can have a dream and you feel yourself somewhere and you’re trying to get to a certain place in life. Right? But you can have access and have the power to do anything and have access with anybody in the world. And so that’s pretty much how I feel the internet is like. It’s having access to something in your dream and power and control of something going on inside of your mind.”
TLM graduates who have left San Quentin and are flourishing outside.
Talking to Tulio Cardozo, founder of Collaborative Benefit.
Heracio Harts, Founder of Healthy Hearts Institute.
Eddie Griffin, founder of At The Club.
The brilliant team behind “The Harvard of Coding” HackReactor, Wes Bailey & Shawn Drost. They are designing the first-ever coding class to be taught in prison, which The Last Mile plans to kick off this fall!
For the A TOTAL DISRUPTION platform, we stopped in to capture the wisdom of the always kind and impressive, Jay Adelson (founder of DIGG and Revision 3).
Former Director of BisDev, Marketing, Social Media (list goes on & on) for Google and Facebook, now Entrepreneur-In-Residence at Greylock Partners & killer guitar player from the Silicon Valley super-band COVERFLOW- Ethan Beard.
MONDAYS WITH MOBY
Ever wondered what Moby’s childhood was like? He shares the experience in his early days in Episode 6 of Mondays With Moby. In Episode 7, he talks about his evolution in activism, in Episode 8 he gives his thoughts on communication, the Internet and Social Networking, in Episode 9 he shares what he really thinks about technology. In our ongoing ATD Chief Executive Artist series, we give you short burst of inspiration to start your week. Here they are for a quick catch up in case you missed em:
Just interviewed award-winning producer (American Splendor, The Brothers Mcmullen) Ted Hope - now CEO of Fandor - for A TOTAL DISRUPTION.
BYOD – Last but not least, your dose of documentary love. Here’s the latest and greatest in docs. Remember, documentaries (and especially the ones we feature) will make you smarter and show you the world!
In this potent, arresting, and surprisingly emotional film, director Goran Olsson artfully elucidates Fanon’s psychiatric and psychological analysis of the dehumanizing effects of colonization on the individual and the nation. Concerning Violence makes accessible Fanon’s theory that the violence of colonialism must be met with greater violence to be defeated, as well as his vision and plea to reject the lust for colonial power and instead embrace a more creative and humane society. As a result, Olsson’s powerful documentary makes an accurate, timely, and vital contribution toward building a better world for the future.
ALL THIS MAYHEM
All This Mayhem is a searing account of what happens when raw talent and extreme personalities collide. In this unflinching, never-before-seen account of drugs and the dark side of professional skateboarding, brothers Tas and Ben Pappas' intense bond and charisma take them from the pinnacle of their sport into a spiraling world of self-destruction.
THE CASE AGAINST 8
A behind-the-scenes look inside the historic case to overturn California's ban on same-sex marriage. The high-profile trial first makes headlines with the unlikely pairing of Ted Olson and David Boies, political foes who last faced off as opposing attorneys in Bush v. Gore. The film also follows the plaintiffs, two gay couples who find their families at the center of the same-sex marriage controversy. Five years in the making, this is the story of how they took the first federal marriage equality lawsuit to the U.S. Supreme Court.
For the past two decades, acclaimed documentary filmmaker Doug Block (51 Birch Street, The Kids Grow Up) has helped support himself by shooting weddings. Hired for his intimate documentary style, he found himself emotionally bonding with his wedding couples on their big day, only to send off their videos and never see them again. Many years and 112 weddings later, having long wondered what’s become of their marriages, Block begins to track down some of his favorite couples. Juxtaposing rapturous wedding day flashbacks with remarkably candid present-day interviews, 112 Weddings explores timeless themes of love and marital commitment.
