"The Salesman is Dead and Gone" is a highly-choreographed, non-verbal, image and action based theatre piece which explores the imagined afterlife of Willy Loman, the central character from Arthur Miller’s classic play “Death of a Salesman.” In creating this work, SPLINTER GROUP hopes to free this iconic character from the original context of Miller's play, both to see him from a new perspective, as well as to understand his continued relevance.

SPLINTER GROUP's production begins where the original play leaves off, with the car crash that ends Willy's life. He finds himself in an indeterminate place where time is irrelevant, and where a second, miniature house that closely resembles his home receives audio transmissions that cause him to re-experience moments from his life. Through these transmissions, he grapples with the ramifications of his choices, trying to make sense of his life and his place in the universe.

SPLINTER GROUP self-produced three workshop performances of this project at Fremont’s “West of Lenin” space in September 2011 to excellent audience and critical response. Our final production will be taking place at the Richard Hugo House on Capitol Hill from December 5th - December 21st.

This production features the work of the following artists:

Risks and challenges

With the team we have in place, I'm confident that this project will happen. What this fundraising effort will allow for is better compensation for the participating artists, something that is an important part of SPLINTER GROUP's artist-focused model. We believe that a budget says a lot about a group's priorities, and for us, investing in our collaborating artists and the work they do is a priority.
