1³ is an art project that aims to bring attention and awareness to the importance of dialogue among the three monotheistic religions: Christianity, Islam and Judaism.
1³ is a small art installation that I conceived many years ago, and that came to life, at last, in 2016, thanks to the love of my awesome husband, Francesco, the support of my family, and the skillful hands of my friends.
At first, I thought I would only build a single work of art, meant to express my wish for World peace through the combination of religious and non-religious symbols into one "object". Then, I realised that peace comes from unity, which is better achieved when sharing: I, therefore, decided to get out of my comfort zone and go beyond my initial plan and expectations.
Following is a brief story on how 1³ evolved from a single small art installation into a virtually infinite number of multiples of art.
I must say, once again, that I would never be here were it not for my beloved ones, who believed in my project and advised me in many precious ways, also providing essential technical support. We spent many months trying to build a prototype and, after we finally succeeded (see picture 1), we realized that it was actually possible to go forward, and put together the first edition of a potentially unlimited series of pieces (see picture 2)
It took a lot of effort and a whole lot of time to overcome all difficulties related to the fact that each 1³ is basically hand made, and can come to life only thanks to peculiar talents and craftmenship expertise: the six pieces that make up the cube are cut from a sheet of acrilyc glass, then manually faceted, and drilled to create the space in which to embed the small magnets; when ready, they are screen printed in two colors, using a specially designed matrix of symbols that are:
- the hexagram of the Star of David;
- Α (α alpha) and Ω (ω omega), i.e. the first and the last letter of the Greek alphabet, to represent every beginning that leads to every ending, and every ending that is also a new beginning;
- two triangles, identical and specularly juxtaposed, to represent the masculine and the feminine, to be found in everything and everyone;
- a heart, to represent love in its simplest shape and purest form; love at the heart of everything and of everyone; love, that can bring together and reunite. Love that will, eventually, conquer all.
The last stage of the rather long process that brings to life each and every 1³ is the most delicate one: the six pieces are patiently and skillfully assembled, with the support of a thin but strong plastic film that holds them together, allowing the facets to approach one another, so as to form the cube; it is, then, possible to reopen it into the cross-shaped form that unveils the inner and full meaning of 1³
In 1³ the three monotheistic religions (Judaism: the Star of David; Christianity: the cross; Islam: the black cube) are equally included and represented, together with all other signs that I have chosen, to express my faith in humanity and my hope for peace.
As I said at the beginning, the aim is, now, to see if more people are interested in my project and decide to be part of it: by pledging any amount without a reward, You will let me know that my idea is worth spreading further, and I will be honored and grateful; if You decide to buy one 1³, You will receive it at home, in its black cotton, hand made little bag, together with its very own tag stating its unique series number (see picture 3).
In any case, I would like to thank everybody in advance!
Thank You, above all, for taking the time to read all that I have written, here, trying to explain my vision, and Thank You from the heart if You will even just consider this project a good subject for discussion and confrontation with Your family and friends :)
Any contribution to this matter I consider invaluable.
Risks and challenges
1³ Is kept closed by small magnets; you only need to "squeeze" it, gently but firmly, and it will open
Small flaws (for instance, in the screen-printing job) are inevitable, and I find that they add to the unicity of each and every 1³
Handle with care and get to know your 1³
You can definetly "play" with it, but keep in mind that it is not a toy and may break if it falls
