Dragons of Avery Isle

By: Cricket Sauca

Prologue

Long ago …..Far off the wild and craggy coast of Scotland, Angus Avery discovered a large island that boasted plenty of land for his wine operation. As intuition told him this would be the place where his children’s children would grow and thrive for generations to come.

Angus had one son Bradford who was about to turn ten.  They unpack all their belongings and began to build what would become Avery Manor.  They were surprised to find they finished quite quickly for all the resources they needed were provided by richness of the Island.

Angus and Bradford walk around and discover what seemed to be large shiny boulders in the valley.

"What are those, father?” asked Bradford.

“They look to be large boulders son” Angus replied, unaware that those boulders were actually dragon eggs just about to hatch.

That spring the eggs hatched while Angus and Bradford were working in the gorges gathering stones to build the foundation for the smokehouse.   They sat together and watched as the little dragons emerged from their shells.

“Look Pa,” cried Bradford, pointing at the shells breaking free.

“Aye, these are little miracles happening right before our eyes son”

Bradford eyes grew huge as he watched the little dragons struggle to break free of their shells.

“Indeed it is Pa,” Bradford agreed.

The Averys raise the eight beautiful metallic dragons and treat them as family. There are two Brass dragons, a male that they named Rolin and a female Treawin, which had dull, mottled brown scales at birth.  As time went by, the scales became brassier until they achieved a warm, burnished luster. They had supple, expressive lips.   These were very useful, talkative, fire breathing dragons.  They made their lair in the high rocky caves of the Island.

The two Bronze dragons, Dreaseth the male and Flone, the female, had a strong sense of justice, and did not tolerate cruelty in any form.  They were also very inquisitive, and found humans very fascinating. They lived on the coastline and protected the Island from sea creatures that threatened to invade their land.

The Gold Dragons, found their way to the Island shortly after the eggs hatched.  They came from the magical realm, once they heard of the younglings hatching.   The male Lancelin, and his mate Kina, were champions against evil and foul play.   They were often coming and going on quests to promote the good of all dragons.  They made their lair in the deep gorges of the Island where they looked after the younglings, and kept their existence quiet.   Gold dragons have large, twin smooth and metallic horns, with whiskers around their mouths like a catfish.  Always leaving a lingering smell of saffron as they pass by.

The Silver dragons hatched last.  The female Reseda and the male Cunnor. These dragons enjoyed helping around the farm, concerning themselves with protecting the innocent and healing their injuries.  They loved the high mountains and vast open skies with billowing clouds, and tried to fly as soon as they were hatched.  The silver dragons had beaklike noses, strong chins, and pointed tongues.  The most sensitive of all the dragons, they were non-violent and avoided combat whenever possible.

The Avery family thrived on the island that was settled by Angus Avery generations ago. The Averys were accustomed to their own world; abounding with valleys and gorges, and encompassed by a beautiful coastline.

The fear of what others would do to their dragons kept the family away from society and in the arms of each other and their loyal dragons. It wasn’t always easy though, and more than a few eyebrows were lost in the attempt to train the bronze dragons to aim and control their flame.

On the mainland, most humans lived under the assumption that dragons were extinct or a legend.  No one had been aware of their existence since times long ago and even then they were said to be mythical creatures, labeled as dangerous and a menace to society, causing most of them to be hunted and killed.  The Averys however, knew better from the start and made their island home a sanctuary for the beautiful misunderstood creatures.
