Panzer Strike: Western Front

$25,019

"Panzer Strike: Western Front" is not a historical wargame but an engaging dynamic simulation of tank combat. It connects movement point allowance system with easy calculation of the outcome of a shot which together provide almost a computer game feeling to it.

No pesky infantry, just metal on metal, mano a mano! If you ever wondered what would happen if you just stormed a town Kelly’s heroes’ style, this is definitely a game for you!

This is a first game in the series of Panzer Strike games which is centered around a theme of tank battles on the Western Front. This is not a depiction of any particular battle, but a simulation of possible tactical conflicts between the Allied and German forces during the 1944-45 period, in an urban environment. During the war, tanks almost always acted together with other military branches and types of units - infantry, artillery, aviation, etc. In this game, alongside tanks, there is self-propelled artillery, while the infantry is present in the form of armored half-trackers and has specific tasks depending on the scenario: to take control of a city square, demine a building, release prisoners etc. However, the main role is reserved for tanks and tank destroyers, and players act as commanders of an armoured formation. Commanding a tank company of about 15 tanks, you are going head to head against your opponent through the narrow or wide streets of a town. But watch your back! Even a mighty Tiger is vulnerable from that side.

Dice are a part of this game but strategy and positioning can always mitigate unlucky rolls. Still, even the most heavily armoured tank on the battlefield can be incapacitated by a lucky shot, but you should never rely on it. The outcome of each encounter depends predominantly on the tactical decisions taken.

The game features two sides, so it is perfectly suited for two players. However, on each side there could be 2 or 3 players playing co-op against the other side (so in total the number of player goes up to 6). In that case, the tanks on each side are divided into several formations that will be controlled by different players from the same sides.

The rules are very simple, and at the same time very realistic so they perfectly emulate a real battle. The game features two different sets of rules: Simplified and Core.

Simplified rules date from 12 years ago and they were the first set of rules implemented in the game (link to history). The movement of the piece consists of a series of individual steps (forward movements to the adjacent square or a rotation in place by 45°) which resembles the movement of tracked vehicles in real life. In the Simplified rules, the destruction upon the action of shooting depends on the Firepower of the shooting tank (determined by red dice rolls), Armour value of the target vehicle (different values for each side of every tank type) and the Distance between the tanks (determined by a special ruler): the tank is destroyed if the Firepower is greater than the sum of the Armour and Distance values. These rules are an excellent representatives of our MCMD principle (minimum complexity, maximum diversity). Because of this, the Pocket version of this game has already had some great reviews on BGG:

"The simplicity cannot be overstated - I read the rules and was playing in around 10 minutes! However, simple does not mean less tactical - I think with the right players this game could be as tactical as chess!"Review by Graham 13

"... the designers vision seemed to me to force you to move, the old shoot, move and communicate Boom-Boom concept."Review by Robert Smith

In the Core Rules, the movement of the pieces is identical, but the difference is that in addition to Firepower, Armour, and Distance factors, there is a fourth one: Accuracy. Its introduction, along with some other elements, makes the game even more dynamic and realistic.

Apart from the two sets of rules, there are also optional rules that allow players to adapt the game to their own affinities, depending on the age, level of tactical and strategic knowledge, time at their disposal, etc.

You can read the rules in the Update #9 and #15:

Simplified rules - Table 1
Simplified rules - Table 1

In order to make the game even more interesting, there will be a dozen of scenarios in a brochure. Some of them will have fixed initial positions and tasks, and some will be more flexible. There will be symmetrical scenarios (similar tasks for both players) and asymmetrical ones.

The game is offered in three versions: Light, Standard, and Premium, as we want to offer diversity to the gamers with different budgets.

- The Light version comes with 60 molded plastic pieces, and the other elements are adapted to the lower price (board of a thinner cardboard, no 3D buildings, and a simple transport box).

- The Standard variant is made according to the higher production standards. Along with 92 molded pieces, it includes 3D cardboard buildings that the players assemble themselves, while the board is made of thicker cardboard. The box is big enough to store the once assembled buildings alongside all other elements.

- The Premium version differs from the Standard version in the fact that it includes 60 realistic miniature tanks in 1/300 scale (3D printed in SLS technology) with rotating turrets instead of the molded pieces.

Every version includes an impressive board of the same size: 66x79 cm (26x31 in).

A three-dimensional board implies that it contains objects which prevent movement or shooting through squares they’re on. In general, refer to all these objects as obstacles. Buildings and monuments belong to High obstacles that cannot be demolished or removed during the games (the buildings can be replaced by completely or partially demolished buildings depending on the agreement between players or a particular scenario in play). It’s not possible to fire through High obstacles. It is possible to shoot over them, however, but this can only be done by Howitzers (explained in detail in the Rulebook).

- For our previous Kickstarter project (Tank Chess), we made a molding tool for high-quality tank pieces that includes all armored vehicle types from the WW2 period: Light, Medium,  and Heavy tanks, Tank destroyers, Self-propelled howitzers, Armoured cars, Half-tracks, etc.

The following vehicles will be in the Light and Standard versions:

- On top of that, we already have prepared the realistic models for almost all types of miniatures involved. These minis are made on high-end 3D printers using SLS technology. All miniatures will be painted, and the players will be able to decorate them further if they want to give them a look even more similar to the real vehicles. The production of these minis will take place at the company Voxellab, which has been an excellent collaborator.

More information about pieces and miniatures in Update #5.

We’ve also prepared a long list of add-ons that can enrich the experience in different ways. The add-ons will be available after the campaign through the Backer Kit pledge manager. These will be some of them:

- Set of 3D buildings - $ 12

- Set of 3D destroyed buildings - $ 8

- Set of 2D destroyed buildings  - $ 2

- Additional tank pieces pack (60 pcs) - $ 12

- Additional miniatures pack (60 pcs) - $ 70

- Print and Play files - $ 5

- STL files of miniatures - $ 20

More information about add-ons in the Update #8.

This game is already very rich in content, but we’ve prepared a set of stretch goals that will enhance it even more. We are open to any backers’ suggestion and we’ll consider every proposal that could lead to an even better gaming experience.

 #1 - $ 15 000: Barricades  ✔

(cardboard markers for Light version, plastic pieces for Standard and Premium)

 #2 - $ 25 000: Trees and Trams

(cardboard markers for Light version, plastic pieces for Standard and Premium)

Everyone who pledges for a physical copy ($28 or more) will be able to get one of the following gifts:

- A First day gift - Everyone who pledges during the first day will get an additional 50 stylized tank pieces or 8 realistic miniatures (depending on the pledge level);

- A Loyalty gift - All backers that helped us in our previous project will get a dice tower;

- A Happy Place gift - In the previous project, we had backers from over 60 countries in which Kickstarter is very popular. This time we want to reach the gamers from places where Kikstarter is not so well known and to expand the community to regions where we haven’t had many backers from. We have selected various countries, states or regions according to the geographical principle. The gift is the game Panzer Strike - France 44 Pocket. Backers from the following countries/regions will get this game:

From our region - Macedonia; from Europe - Poland; from Asia - India; from Africa - all countries of North Africa; North America – the state of Texas; Central America – Mexico; South America – Paraguay; Australia/Oceania – The state of New South Wales.

- A Media Contributor gift - As in the previous project, we will reward all those who contribute to a successful project (before and) during the campaign through activity on social networks, BGG, posting in various magazines, blogs, etc.

Based on all kinds of experiences we’ve had with shipping during our previous projects, we made a different strategy for this one. By using services of fulfillment companies, we’ve provided EU friendly and US friendly shipping, and if we have at least 50 backers from Canada and Australia, we’ll provide friendly shipping for these regions also.

Shipping costs are the following:

Risks and challenges

We have gained a lot of experience working on the realization of previous projects. We’ll repeat everything that has proven to be a positive point, and we’ve made additional effort to introduce improvements to this project. Thanks to your previous support, we’ve acquired new machines (5 3D printers, a packing machine, a cutting machine, a punch machine, etc.) and made two expensive tools for molded pieces. With all that, our workshop is perfectly suited for small and medium series of any version, so we’ve again put a small campaign goal: only $ 2,000. We believe that this campaign will also be very successful and we will certainly do our best to ship all the awards in time or even before the announced deadline. We emphasize that the molded tools are already done, as well as almost all 3D models of realistic minis, so the production of the pieces will start even before the pledge manager ends.
