"Panzer Strike: Western Front" is not a historical wargame but an engaging dynamic simulation of tank combat in an urban environment. It is not a replica of any particular battle and the emphasis is on the tanks and their characteristics: Mobility, Firepower, and Protection.

Unit positioning is the key factor in the game, which makes it a direct technical simulation of real combat, as in computer games. Simple rules allow quick game pace with many twists in a single battle. Dice contribute to versatility, but with good tactics, the luck factor is reduced to a minimum.

Having multiple units at disposal, you know their strengths and weaknesses, and the enemy units waiting for you on the battleground - there is no predetermined way to win, and all you need to do is to move your tanks wisely while outsmarting the opponent by shooting at the targets’ weakest sides.

The game system is a sort of sandbox concept where you can test various situations with the given "physics" determined by the rules, while the scenarios are there to guide the game by giving specific tasks in specific conditions.

During the war, tanks almost always acted together with other military branches and types of units - infantry, artillery, aviation, etc. In this game, alongside tanks, there is self-propelled artillery, while the infantry is present in the form of armored half-trackers and has specific tasks depending on the scenario: to take control of a city square, demine a building, release prisoners, etc. However, the main role is reserved for tanks and tank destroyers, and players act as commanders of an armored formation.

PANZER STRIKE GAME SERIES

The plan for Panzer Strike: Western Front (PS:WF) is to be published in three standalone games and two expansions which will together form a huge urban 3D terrain (~ 2 x 1,5 meters). This project features the first two games:

PS:WF 1 represents the Central part of the town, with many residential and public buildings.

PS:WF 2 is the Northern part, which is characterized by a railway station and an industrial zone.

Future games and expansions will be the following:

PS:WF 3 will be the Southern part where the town gradually transits into suburbs. It will have a small river with bridges over it, a large estate with a chateau, etc.

PS:WF 4 will be a terrain expansion (only board and 3D objects) which extends the town to the West. The outermost edge will be bordered by a large river. It will feature a port and an old town (fortress). Besides the terrain, the set will contain movable ships.

PS:WF 5 will be an expansion to the East. The railway and industrial zone from the Northern part will continue here, and the main feature of this expansion will be an airport.

More details about "Western Front" series will be published in one of the future updates.

Panzer Strike: Eastern Front will primarily represent an open field environment. Besides the 3D objects, it will feature a full 3D terrain (hillocks, riverbeds, etc.). It will also have multiple expansions.

Panzer Strike: North Africa and Panzer Strike: Spanish Civil War are also planned.

All the games from the Panzer Strike series will be mutually compatible (scale, rules, miniatures, etc.)

There are two games in offer in this campaign: PS: WF 1 (Center) and PS: WF 2 (North) in two versions each: Standard and Premium. The difference between versions is in tank pieces: the Standard version has molded pieces (102 of them), while the Premium one comes with realistic miniatures (66 pcs).

Other elements (board, buildings, plastic elements, manuals...) are the same. The full contents of each option is presented in the images below:

The rules, although very simple, realistically emulate a real battle. The game features two different sets of rules: Simplified and Core.

Simplified rules date from 12 years ago and they were the first set of rules implemented in the game (link to history). The movement of the piece consists of a series of individual steps (forward movements to the adjacent square or a rotation in place by 45°) which resembles the movement of tracked vehicles in real life. In the Simplified rules, the destruction upon the action of shooting depends on the Firepower of the shooting tank (determined by the red dice rolls), Armour value of the target vehicle (different values for each side of every tank type) and the Distance between the tanks (determined by a special ruler): the tank is destroyed if the Firepower is greater than the sum of the Armour and Distance values. Shooting efficiency drops drastically over distance, so the combat occurs mostly at short range.

These rules are excellent representatives of our MCMD principle (minimum complexity, maximum diversity). Because of this, the Pocket version of this game has already had some great reviews on BGG:

"The simplicity cannot be overstated - I read the rules and was playing in around 10 minutes! However, simple does not mean less tactical - I think with the right players this game could be as tactical as chess!" -  Review by Graham 13

"... the designers vision seemed to me to force you to move, the old shoot, move and communicate Boom-Boom concept." - Review by Robert Smith

In the Core Rules, the movement of the pieces is identical, but the difference is that in addition to Firepower (penetration), Armour, and Distance factors, there is a fourth one: Accuracy. Unlike in the Simplified rules, the penetration value drops gradually over distance. These changes make the game even more realistic and a more tactical engagement from players is required, while the rules remain simple to learn.

Besides the basic differences from the Simplified rules, in future, there will be a series of Advanced Optional Rules which can be applied in any combination, so the players can adapt the game to their own affinities, depending on the age, level of tactical and strategic knowledge, time at their disposal, etc. (for example difference in accuracy when moving and when standing still, different types of damage, etc.).

You can read the rules (working version) HERE and HERE:

Simplified rules - Table 1
Simplified rules - Table 1

In order to implement some specific tasks, there will be a dozen scenarios in a brochure. Some of them will have fixed initial positions and tasks, and some will be more flexible. There will be symmetrical scenarios (similar tasks for both players) and asymmetrical ones.

Read more about scenarios for PS:WF 1 HERE.

PS:WF 2 will contain scenarios for the Northern part of the town and for both boards combined.

The battleground consists of a board, three-dimensional buildings and plastic elements.

The board has 4 parts (33x39cm each, total 66x78cm).

The 3D buildings come in unassembled. The set contains sheets of a gray solid board (thickness 1mm) and self-adhesive paper that are used to form buildings’ bases. The walls are made of a gray solid board of a 1.5mm thickness that is already cut to the exact shape and size. The facades are made of self-adhesive laminated paper. The roofs are printed on laminated cardboard.

There is a detailed instruction for assembling. The set contains one extra building that serves for practicing. With a little patience and dexterity, everything can be easily assembled. The Northern board is a bit more challenging than the Central part because of some smaller elements (barracks and wagons).

Buildings built this way are very sturdy and resistant. See the drop-test video:

Plastic elements are also a part of the terrain and they can represent high (monument, walls, trams, etc.) or low obstacles (fountains, planters,etc.).

In the Northern part, there is a train composed of plastic and cardboard elements. The locomotive and some wagons count as high, while the other wagons count as low obstacles. Like a tram, they can also move along the rails during the game.

For our Tank Chess project, we already made two molding tools for the plastic pieces. When we make a series of PS:WF pieces, they will be done in camo-like colors, in tones similar to ones of the miniatures. These pieces do not have rotating turrets. Each piece represents a class of tank: there are Light tanks, Medium tanks, Heavy tanks, Light, Medium and Heavy Tank destroyers, Howitzers, Tank hunters, Armoured cars, and Half-tracks.

Each standard set contains 102 tank pieces (51 on each side)

The Premium set contains miniatures done according to particular types of armored vehicles. If a tank has a turret, the turret on the mini can rotate. There is a total of 66 miniatures, but the distribution by classes is different, i.e. the German side has more Heavy tanks, and the Allied side more vehicles in total (mediums and lights).

As add-ons, there are various sets with different miniatures, and in the future there will be even more.

Miniatures are in 1:300 scale, i.e. "6mm". They are produced in SLS 3D printing technology, which results in a sand-like surface. According to that, the level of detail is lower (vehicles don't have spare tracks, boxes, hatches, etc.), but the important details are there and the proportions are correct so each version of a vehicle is recognizable.

The miniatures are already dye painted, and therefore immediately ready to play (although, you can paint additional details if you want).

Miniatures made in this technology are quite robust and don't require much care when packing. For example, gun barrels are elastic and therefore hard to break. See the short video:

Since the miniatures are in standard scale (1:300), you can use miniatures from other manufacturers as well (even 1:285 miniatures could do).

Everyone who pledges for a physical copy of a game (all the options except for ''Thanks'', PnP and STL) during the first 24 hours will receive a First Day Gift: an armored train with two wagons and a long-range cannon Big Bertha along with special scenarios where they have the main role. The Big Bertha will not be involved directly in the fight, as its range is too much for a battlefield of this scale. All these items form a mini-expansion that will be available as an add-on for $8 if you don't manage to grab it as a gift.

The add-ons will be available after the campaign through the Backer Kit pledge manager. These will be some of them:

- Armored train and Big Bertha howitzer mini-expansion - $ 8 (~0,10kg)

- Set of 3D buildings (Central) - $ 12 (~0,5kg)

Each add-on will be described in the pledge manager.

This game is already very rich in content, but we’ve prepared a set of stretch goals that will enhance it even more. We are open to any backers’ suggestion and we’ll consider every proposal that could lead to an even better gaming experience.

#1 - $ 10 000: Barricades (6 low and 6 high ones)

-

#2 - $ 12 000: Passenger train (a locomotive and 4 wagons)

#3 - $ 14 000: 4 improvised bunkers

The pledges made on BackerKit (after the Kickstarter campaign) also count towards reaching new stretch goals.

By using services of fulfillment companies, we’ve provided EU friendly and US friendly shipping, and if we have at least 50 backers from Canada and Australia, we’ll provide friendly shipping for these regions also.

In our previous campaign, we used for the first time the services of a pledge manager company (Backer Kit). Because of some discrepancies, some of the backers were charged twice for the shipping (the first time on KS, the second time in the pledge manager) and they will be compensated for it. However, since we don’t want the issue to repeat itself, in this campaign, the shipping will not be charged during Kickstarter, but only in Backer Kit! That way, the shipping fee will be calculated after you complete your order (you may add various items then) according to the total weight of the order. The table shows the shipping fees:

For example, a single copy of the game (PS:WF 1 or PS:WF 2) weighs approximately 2,4 kg, which belongs to the category "< 3,5 kg". Two copies (PS:WF 1 + PS:WF 2) belong to the category "< 5 kg".

The reward options and add-ons section show the rough weights so you can estimate what will be the shipping costs if you purchase add-ons in the pledge manager.

Risks and challenges

We have gained a lot of experience working on the realization of previous projects. We’ll repeat everything that has proven to be a positive point, and we’ve made additional effort to introduce improvements to this project. Thanks to your previous support, we’ve acquired new machines (5 3D printers, a packing machine, a cutting machine, a punch machine, etc.) and made two expensive tools for molded pieces. With all that, our workshop is perfectly suited for small and medium series of any version, so we’ve again put a small campaign goal.
