Edge Dominos maintains the traditional number pattern but innovates by using solid aluminum and removing all excess material. Travel-size and light weight, Edge works just as well on-the-go as it does around your home. The durable black metal finish and laser engraved number pattern will never scratch off, ensuring that your set will be played for generations. Minimal and unexpected, Edge Dominos brings new life to a classic game.
Double-six dominos is a captivating game of strategy. Perfect while travelling, camping, catching up with friends or relaxing around the house, playing dominos is a great way to enjoy the moment. Having played dominos for years and frustrated with the plastic sets on the market, I decided to create a new type of domino that maintained the essence of the classic game. The pieces are tactile, feel great in your hands, and there is a rhythmic sound when each tile hits the table. The final form is composed of the walls and the numbers only, and the tiles are thick enough to stand on their edge yet small enough to be travel-size. Edge dominos are meant to be played, and when the game is done, it makes a unique display piece for the home.
Edge dominos are made differently from any other domino set. Every tile is extruded from a solid block of aluminum, which is a zero waste process and the material is 100% recyclable. The metal flows into shape, is then cut to length and finished with a durable matte black anodized coating. Each unique number pattern in the 28 piece set is laser engraved onto the tiles, creating bright, white and everlasting dots. The result is a quality domino that looks great, plays well and is 100% made in the USA.
Thanks to the incredible early support, production has begun on Edge Dominos! We are ahead of schedule and so excited to be making this product right here in the USA. Have a look behind the scenes at the domino extrusion process. Next step is anodizing matte black and then laser engraving the dot pattern.
Beyond the early bird specials and discounts off retail price, there are unique rewards that will only be available during this kickstarter campaign. I am proud to be working with painter and photographer Ian Momsen to offer 10 totally unique custom painted boxes. Ian uses a drip and resist technique he developed to ensure each box is one-of-a-kind. This collaboration results in a truly beautiful display piece for the home.
Risks and challenges
During my time as the lead designer and program manager for San Francisco based lighting company Pablo Designs, I successfully brought multiple product families to market. These lighting products involved complicated mechanisms along with cutting edge LED technology. While at Pablo, I managed every aspect from concept development to design to engineering to the final product launch. Based on over 5 years of experience in product development, I feel very confident that Edge Dominos will meet the target ship date of the second week of February 2016.
The design is fully engineered and I have gone through multiple pre-production sample runs with each manufacturing partner. The extrusion tool, which is the most complicated part of this project, is already complete and tested. I've worked very closely with the American manufacturers throughout the development cycle, and they are all ready and waiting to fulfill the order.
I should note that the production schedule is based on an order of 500 domino sets. If I receive order quantities above 500, the manufactures will need a few more weeks to complete the larger quantities. I promise to communicate early and often should any production delays arise.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
