ABOUT THIS PROJECT
Welcome to Kika the Upside Down Girl! My name is Jessica Tudos, and as creator of this project, I'm so excited to share more about our fun and inspiring kids story.
“Kids like me just wanna be free, upside down, you and me” is Kika’s theme song, and it truly sets the stage for some incredible upside down adventures and heartfelt explorations she has at home, school, outdoors and in a fliptastic place...the Gymnastics Emporium!
Ideal for 4-10 year olds, with a message that transcends age, Kika's adventurous story will appeal to readers who enjoy turning their world a little upside down to find happiness. And the whimsical acrobatic illustrations are super fun too!

WHY I WROTE THIS STORY
As an Olympic gymnast, educator & Mom, I want to inspire kids, and the grown ups who love and support them, to fully explore the ups, downs & upside downs of their interests and choices. Overcoming challenges and uncertainty to carve a meaningful life path continue in my life, and my hope is that Kika's story will inspire readers to keep turning their worlds upside down in order to find fulfillment and joy in theirs.
Drawing from my own gymnastics journey, Kika The Upside Down Girl brings to life the story of an adventurous child who engages in life upside down, which was something I explored quite early as you can see...
As an Olympic gymnast, I know how it feels to spend over 10,000 hours upside down, training 30 hours per week, for over a decade. I was committed to perfecting new skills and the thrill of that feeling, but often, this choice was misunderstood, and I felt isolated and lonely at times.
The support of my parents, coaches and friends was essential to staying confident and focused as I worked towards reaching my full potential.
My hope is that kids who read Kika the Upside Down Girl will acknowledge these inherent challenges, and draw on their unique strengths to find the support they need to continue exploring what they love.
Perseverance, hard work and trust eventually led me to the Olympic Games doing what I loved, which just so happened to be upside down!
As an educator, parent and speaker, I am fully committed to motivating kids to lead active, healthy lives. Shining a light on gymnastics, the "ultimate human movement experience" is one way to share this message. More on The Benefits of Gymnastics in a recent article I wrote.
WHAT WE ALREADY HAVE
It takes a lot of work to create a high quality picture book, and I am happy to share that all the pieces are in place to produce a fantastic book, a first in the "inspirational gymnastics-themed” picture book genre.
The story is complete. Sample illustrations by Mike Motz are done, and book designer Naomi Rose is completing the design. A detailed printing, distribution, marketing and promotion plan is in place - all we need now is your support to ensure we can print and distribute far and wide.
As an experienced project manager, I know how to “get good ideas done” and have prepared for Kika the Upside Down Girl’s success accordingly. More in my recent post, kickstarter as the best business coach.
Oh, and our rewards are awesome!
In addition to the beautiful book, which will be ready IN TIME FOR HOLIDAY GIFTS THIS YEAR, we have created some amazing opportunities for you to share in Kika's story: readings, book donations to Literature fro Life, motivational talks, hands-on gymnastics lessons, private coaching and a private lunch with Jessica and 3-time Olympic gold medalist in rowing Marnie McBean! All our rewards are listed on the right!
Most importantly, what we already have is YOU – the community.
Which brings me to…
WHY I AM ASKING FOR SUPPORT
Bringing a new kids picture book to life independently takes a significant amount of time, energy and money, more than I could have known when I first envisioned reading my son a fun story about an upside down kid. My desire to produce an inspiring, high quality book has never wavered, and I know that with your support, we will get there. Kika will be produced.
The funds I am seeking cover the basic costs of creating, printing, distributing & marketing the book, which breaks down to:
- time and labor in the illustration & design of the book
- creation and management of Kika’s marketing & online presence
- print run of 1,000 books
- shipping to all of you, our backers
The ideas don’t stop there! If we raise more than our goal, we can:
- print additonal books that can be distributed to a wider audience
- create an animated e-book
- create support materials for parents, educators, coaches, etc.
- plan a book tour and reach many, many more readers
The more we raise, the more we can do. For those new to Kickstarter, it‘s an all or nothing proposition. If we reach our funding goal, we can utilize the funds; if we fall short, we get nothing. So, we're going for gold!
