Thank you so much. I can't begin to tell you what your generosity and support has meant to me over the last thirty days. I am moved beyond my ability to express in words.
I love the potential that music has to touch lives. When I was growing up, the songs of my favorite artists were able to carry the weight of some of my most complicated and devastating personal emotions. Ever since I discovered that power, I have lived to attempt to do that for others. Music has a power unlike almost anything else I've experienced to open hearts and touch the core of an emotion, to let the listener know: "I've been there. You're not alone."
That - to me - is beautiful. It's why I do this.
Nearly twelve years ago, I abandoned everything else - promising alternative futures notwithstanding - to chase this wild dream of being a performing songwriter. It's been a hell of a chase. In making 8 albums and EPs, touring nationally, and playing over 1,000 shows... I've learned a few things about being an artist... most importantly these two:
1. the most rewarding thing about being an artist is when something I've written touches someone's life.
2. perhaps even more importantly, I am nothing without my friends and fans... you guys.
In a way (perhaps because I was scared that I didn't have what it takes) I've never fully committed to this dream... until now. This album 'Heart on Fire' is where I take a BIG shot on myself.
This is the album I've always wanted to write, because I started writing from the gut and the heart... like I did when I was fifteen, but with years of craft to back it up. I'm making music to make music, not to fit the market... and ironically, some of my most marketable songs have emerged. I'm letting my heart out without any filters. And it feels like home. I can't wait to share this with you!
How I made records before:
I made my last three studio albums alone... with very little help or input from others. I wrote all the songs, played nearly every instrument, produced, arranged, recorded, and mixed. And really, that's pretty cool. It was a lot of fun and a killer education.
And maybe because I was doing it alone... I don't think any album I've made up to this point, has come even close to living up to the potential I had at the point in my career when I made it. I'm ready to do things differently.
1. I'm handing over the whole project to professionals who are brilliant at what they do. The recording, mixing, mastering, and all of the other instrumental and background vocal performances... those will be up to people who are far better at each of those things than I am. These guys know what they're doing. They know how to bring MUSIC to life!
2. I plan on recording all of the basic performances live. I hear a lot of comments about how people wish that songs on my studio albums had the energy and passion of the same songs at a live show. I'm listening to my friends and fans. Live performance... vibe, feel, energy.
This album expresses the heart of my identity and voice as an artist better than any I've ever made... but there's something more important about it: these songs have gotten me truly excited - for the first time in years - to be a musician. I'm dreaming like a kid again.
I am so grateful to everyone who's been a part of my journey to becoming an artist, and I want to give you all something incredible in return. You have sustained me. You have kept me going when I'm not sure I would have done that for myself. Seriously, thank you.
I'm insanely grateful for EVERY pledge, large or small. Help me get this started. I promise: I'll make you proud to be a part of where it ends up.
Thank you thank you thank you!!!
Risks and challenges
Making an album is an incredible process. It's also a complicated one. It's possible that it will take longer than expected to achieve the level of quality we're looking for in this recording. I am prepared to take on additional expenses if necessary to get the right result for this album. There is potential that my ability to fulfill the rewards for this project could be delayed if the album needs extra work to be truly finished and ready to ship.
