About

We are ready. We're ready to get scared, to try hard, to fail and to push ourselves beyond the limits that we, as women, are perceived to be bound by. In creating a documentary, as women (about women) who are trying to push boundaries, we hope to make a statement to the greater climbing community. There is an inadequate representation of females in climbing media (see Reel Rock 10, or the top 15 climbing movies this year), and even less representation when it comes to filmmaking and offering a female perspective in adventure film. In our film we hope to start a dialogue with other women about their experiences with gender and climbing.

When we started talking about this climbing trip, a lot of people started reaching out and expressing that our goals were inspiring. We thought, well, why not share this with a larger audience? Already, with the launching of this project, we have had so many e-mails from females who are excited about what we’re doing. This is what it’s about. This is what gets us excited. This is why we’re doing what we’re doing. While we love watching grizzled men grunting over boulders and scaling monstrous routes, we’ve seen for ourselves that women, too, can grunt and scale. There are plenty of women out there who are also accomplishing film-worthy feats!

Our plan is to travel to some of the best climbing areas in the world, from sport climbing on limestone in Spain to putting up first ascents on splitter cracks in China, and document our adventure and conversations along the way. We have destinations, characters, and a cause we feel passionate about, and we believe that over the course of a year, the story will unfold for itself.

Your donations will help us buy camera equipment and editing software, pay for transportation/time for those helping us with footage, support our travels, and spread the lady stoke!

What's the documentary about?

There are two main things we want to tackle in this documentary:

1) In creating this documentary, as women (about women) who are trying to push boundaries, we hope this will make a statement in itself. There is an inadequate representation of females in climbing media (see Reel Rock 10). There is even less representation when it comes to film making and offering a female perspective in adventure film.

2) We are hoping to start a dialogue with other women about gender and climbing. Interviews as well as conversations at the crag are two of the strategies we’ll be using to explore this topic.

What's your plan?

We don't want the constrictions of a set storyline or itinerary but, rather, the ability to be able to organically capture the trip and our exploration of female climbing culture along the way. Places that we plan on visiting are Spain, France, and China, but really, the adventure could take us anywhere. We have destinations, characters, and a cause we feel passionate about and we believe that over the course of a year the story will unfold for itself.

Is this just to fund a climbing vacation for the two of you?

We will be going on this trip either way, but we are hoping to empower others through documentation of the trip. We've been saving money since we started working together in Wilderness Therapy to fund this trip. So we will be going either way! This kick starter is to raise money for camera equipment, editing software, transportation/time for those helping us with footage, and to support our travel as well.

Why are you making this Documentary ?

We are tired of the lack of representation women have in climbing media and we want to do something about it. When we started talking about this climbing trip, a lot of people were reaching out and expressing that our goals were inspiring. We thought, well, why not share this with a larger audience? Already, with the launching of this project we have had so many e-mails from women who are excited about what we’re doing. This is what it’s about. This is what gets us excited. This is why we’re doing what we’re doing.

What is STOKE?

- To encourage or incite (a strong emotion or tendency)

- To excite or thrill

- Adjective: stoked "When they told me I was on the team, I was stoked"

Amy and Rhiannon's Biography

We first met at an orientation for wilderness therapy work several years ago and instantly became dedicated climbing partners. We have spent the past few years seeking rock and feeding our appetites for fresh air, dirty feet, and limitless views. From bouldering in the Buttermilks, trad climbing in Yosemite, and doing the first female ascent of "Richness of It All" in Snow Canyon, we are continuously seeking out challenging routes and adventures. In our work as wilderness therapy instructors and through our climbing endeavors, we’ve seen the effect that the unequal presence of women in the wilderness has on the female psyche. This observation fueled a desire to make a documentary about our experience as female climbers. We're inspired by climbers, like Hazel Findlay, testing themselves and testing social constructs, which tell them what they should be and do, how they should look and act. We're not professional climbers, just two best friends looking to have fun, try hard, and get other ladies stoked!

Risks and challenges

We plan on filming for up to a year to get as much footage as possible. We have a lot to learn in terms of filming, editing, and marketing and we want to dedicate the next year of our lives to this project. Injury, weather, and giggling could potentially present challenges (although Rhiannon did spend 6 months last year climbing one-footed with a broken heel).
