Hi Ya'll; It's Lauren Murphy, fearless leader of "The Psychedelics", my high-energy & super fun new band formed down in Lower Alabama, in 2016.
We are All Full Time Gigging Musicians. It's a lot of Love & Work, but we're living the Dream!
For the last 3 years, we've been performing all over the Gulf Coast , and last fall began writing together. We've been nominated locally as "Best New Band" & fans and Dj's keep asking...."Where can I get your CD?". So here we are!
......Ready to Manifest our First Record.
Here's a little of our Backstory:
After close to 2 decades in Northern California, two events transpired that catapulted me moving to the artistic hamlet of Fairhope, Al; the untimely death of my music partner/husband Judge Murphy(ZERO/Lansdale Station), and the King Fire that nearly took our home 1 year later. Tour brought me here, and I discovered an explosive music scene, one I haven't seen the likes of since the heyday of the 1990's in San Francisco, Seattle, Athens, and the like. It was a leap of faith for myself and young daughter, that has spiritually emotionally and musically paid off.
Yet missing the Psychedelic SF Bay, I set out to bring that mid-60's style of music, and ultimately the ((Vibes)) of Love & Joy, to the Mobile Bay. It took about a year of head-hunting to assemble these dudes , as this stuff ain't easy to play!
Who are the Psychedelics?
My Right-hand man and Co-band leader is Professor John Cochran on lead guitar & slide.
JC is Professor of Jazz, Guitar, & Music at University of Mississippi Hattiesburg, University of So. Alabama, & Coastal Community College. Mentored by Greg Allman guitar Master, Jack Pearson, John has cultivated over 150 years of knowledge & skill in his 33 years on this planet. There is a symbiosis & synergy in our playing, almost as if he psychically knows what I want to hear out of him. I couldn't do this w/o our stratospherically talented Buddha Boy, John. He's a true MVP. His own side project, The Bodhi Trio, delivers up the tastiest jazz and that man can nail Coltrane, which he does in tribute once a year.
John Keuler was selected for his R&B, Funk, and Soul background on bass, as well as his ability to hit some pretty high harmony vocals. Keuler studied music at The University of Alabama Tuscaloosa and works full time as a musician with not just 'The Psychedelics", but also 'Molly Thomas & The Rare Birds'(Todd Snider/Rick Hirsch) & The Light Travelers. He is a very talented multi-instrumentalist with a great attitude..... and HUGE Deadhead. He lives in Loxley, Al. with his wife Miranda and they are expecting their first child in early May!
Winter Baynes aka "The Big Cheese" holds down our drum & percussion chair. This 'animal' is explosive in the tradition of John Bonham mixed with the fluidity of Mitch Mitchell . Winter comes from one of the largest music families in lower Alabama, and also works full time as a professional musician . He's not only one hell of a drummer, he has an amazing ear for production and song arrangement. Winter lives in Daphne, Al with his wife and 2 children.
And me? I'm a single Mom/ Widow and full time gigging Musician. Not an easy path... but it sure is worth it. I majored in English Lit. w/ a minor in Music at LSU(Baton Rouge, La.) and was mentored by Romanian renegade Poet/ NPR All Things Considered host, Andrei Codrescu, as well as Maya Angelou. I have over 15 years of classical training(piano/voice), and debuted w/ John Rutter and the NY Philharmonic in Carnegie Hall at age 16. I'm a self taught guitarist & have been composing for close to 20 years. Yet, it wasn't until I moved to Northern California in the mid-90's that I fell into the Psychedelic world of Art & Music. Hippies!! Wavy Gravy(Woodstock/SEVA Foundation) was one of the first people to thrust me on stage as a "tweener" act at his historic "Hog Farm Family Picnic" between ZERO & Leftover Salmon. A few years later I would meet my husband, "The Judge", in Humboldt Co. He was the lead singer for the Grateful Dead off-shoot band 'ZERO', and the Dead's lyricist Robert Hunter, penned many songs for his smoky vocals. We will be including 2 of those on this record in honor of his memory , and moreover to keep these tunes alive. Judge was a huge personality and making music with him immersed me in the Psychedelic Rock Scene playing with Dave Getz & Sam Andrew(Big Brother/Janis), Pete Sears & Darby Slick(Jefferson Airplane), Steve Kimock(ZERO/Bob Weir), Mark Karan (Rat Dog/The Other Ones/ Phil Lesh/Weir) and many more.......
As Johnny Cole of 'The Southland Music Line' so aptly put it;
" Lauren Murphy, alone or with her latest music ensemble, Lauren Murphy & The Psychedelics, brings the very essence of the classic San Francisco sound to the stage. Having performed with some the Bay Area's most famous and respected musicians, she can always be found delighting audiences everywhere with her inimitable style. In a crowded field of sometimes repetitious music mediocracy, it's refreshing to experience Murphy's gift for originality and soul-stirring performances. "
The last Kickstarter I produced was "El Dorado"; a folk-mountain music Cd dedicated to my late husband, as it was one of his final wishes. It came in at 150% of my funding goal. This will be my 5th self produced record. One could say I know the in's & out's of making a record.
Since my husband died, I have struggled with being Positive , Living in the Now, and most of all regaining the Love & Zest for life I once had. This band , The Psychedelics, have given me those gift back, and now we want to share that Vibe with the World.
We have booked out Mobile Alabama's premier recording studio owned by former SF Giant's #22 Jake Peavy, who's a HUGE Dead Head himself, for late April. Flying into town from SF, Ca. is Mark Karan who will be in the production chair. Mark & I have been on 3 CD's together, 2 of which he produced. He was one of the featured guitarist for my last CD, "El Dorado". Mark was Bob Weir's pick for the guitar chair in the very first post Jerry Garcia incarnation of the Grateful Dead (The Other Ones/Rat Dog).
After we're done recording, Mark will then fly the mix back to the San Francisco Bay Area, where Dead & Co's Engineer, Vadim Canby, will master the final product.
Our Aim is in Infuse the Airwaves with Music that Matters & Music that Unites during a time of man when there is so much divisiveness. I look to the likes of Ram Dass and his "Be Here Now" / "Be Love Now" philosophy and we've put that into our songs.
1.) Give in to Love - an original that fuses 'The Art of War', 'The Te' of Piglet', and 'The Tibetan Book of the Dead' with a funky backbeat.
2.) Psychedelicize - an original song based on the Greek root of the word Psyche Delos, meaning Mind Manifesting. It's a plea to organic nature in a cyber world.
3.) Time Across- an old Lauren Murphy original that has never been recorded. "We Are the Music Makers and We are the Dreamers of Dreams" (W. Wonka)
4.) The Ballad of Booker & Honey - while this song was featured on the last CD 'El Dorado' in a throw-back 1890's New Orleans jazz procession, The Psychedelics have added more smoke and sleaze to this metaphor about the music business. Oh honey, I'm living on borrowed time.....
5.) Catalina - penned in the early 90's by Steve Kimock, Robert Hunter, & Greg Anton of ZERO for Judge Murphy to sing, this is a classic song that should be heard by larger markets. This is Wavy Gravy's favorite ZERO tune, and we do it right
6.) End of the World Blues - another tune penned by the Grateful Dead's Robert Hunter for Judge ZERO to perform with ZERO. Being in the Delta, the home of the blues, and unfortunate Oil Spill, the lyrics are even more poignant today than when they were written.
7.) Somebody to Love - our rendition of the classic Jefferson Airplane song written by my pal, Darby Slick.
A band can't advance without a product... and it's time... We Manifest This Music into Psychedelic Reality.
As they said in the 60's, 'Buy the Ticket Take the Ride'....and We thank you in advance for Getting on the Bus with Us!
Risks and challenges
As this is my 5th Self Produced Album with a Solid team, I see truly no risk in completion.
We're excited for you to help us raise a portion of the funds needed....and we'll do the rest
