About

A COWBOY OPERETTA

Our company Make A Hand is producing the album A Cowboy Operetta, which is based on the novel The Spirit of Dogie Long by famed western writer J.P.S. Brown. Our mission is artistically presenting authentic traditional cowboy values, by which Mr. Brown has lived all his life.

Make A Hand Crew recording the foundation tracks

The appeal of this Cowboy and Folk album is cross-generational - story-based music!  All the foundational tracks (vocals, guitar, and bass) are done, some of which you can hear on the video, but this is only the beginning!

Here's a sneak peek of the song "Cattle Drive".  You'll see vocalist and songwriter Cory Padilla rehearsing with guitarist Nate Jasensky and then you'll hear what we have recorded.  Enjoy the riffs, the grit and the talent these two artist bring to the table.

The money we raise here will allow us to finish this project and keep the artistic production independent and true to our mission. We have the talent, such as Tim Weed on banjo, NYC guitarist Nate Jasensky, and producer, 2-time Grammy Nominated Hank Feldman. We need your help to bring this music, and it's message, to young and old alike.  A Cowboy Operetta brings original lyrics and music that keep The Spirt of Dogie Long alive!

SONGWRITER/VOCALIST *** CORY PADILLA

"I'd like to start by thanking you so much for your interest. The opportunity to write music for a living icon of the western world first presented itself when my father took me down to meet a Mr. J.P.S. Brown on a ranch, in Patagonia, Arizona. Joe was like a bright light and I knew, without even touching a book, he had to be an amazing author. At the end of our visit, my father told me to go get my guitar. I shared some songs and Joe asked me a snap question... "Could you write some songs for my books?” Before he could probably finish another sentence my answer was absolutely… All we need is that extra push to get this car rolling down the highway. Hold fast!"

PRODUCER *** ENRIQUE "HANK" FELDMAN

“… A Cowboy Operetta is one of the most rewarding, authentic and exciting artistic projects I've ever been involved with. Having the chance to continue the legacy of someone like J.P.S. Brown is truly an honor… this project takes  me back home. My grandfather was a Cowboy - simple, honest, hard working, and full of life. This music goes beyond telling the story of Dogie Long. It reaches deep inside our universal commonality of wanting something good in life and making the future a better place.”

MAKE A HAND *** J.P.S. BROWN

“Cowboys are also called “hands” and “cowhands.” In order to “make a hand” a cowboy must take hold of any task for which he has been hired and apply every bit of his skill and dedication to the task from start to finish. The best reward a cowboy can have is to be told that he made a hand. The worst that can be said of him is that he didn’t make a hand, or that he’s not a good hand.”

Authenticity has been Joe Brown's ace of spaces throughout his long career, beginning with the novel Jim Kane in 1970...the book became the movie Pocket Money, with Paul Newman and Lee Marvin. I first read the cowboy-writer J.P.S. Brown's "Dogie Long" story when it ran as serial fiction in Western Horseman magazine several years ago...the Horseman was sold, and the new buyer ditched fiction entirely. My favorite foundling went away, and I kept wondering, "Whatever became of Dogie?" Well, the kid is back in a full-length novel called The Spirit of Dogie Long, a sweet, intelligent story... and the first-person voice is so true that the reader will feel comfortable in Brown's self-assured hands."

"An infant boy is found by a trail crew on a cattle drive from New Mexico to California in the 1870's... the crew teaches the boy how to handle himself the Cowboy Way, with honesty, compassion, and integrity... he is separated from his outfit in an extraordinary and unexpected way."

"When the cattle drive takes them past a deserted wagon, the men suddenly realize they hear something.  Nothing had prepared them to find an orphaned newborn boy... he's curious, adventurous, and wants to be a horseman like his friends, but it's a rough tough world on the trail... this book will hold your attention... it will teach you a few things, make you shed a few tears, and leave you with a respect for cowboys."

Enjoy this sneak peek of the song "The Girls".  You're going to hear exactly what the producer heard in his headphones at first, then you'll hear a mixed rough cut fade in.  Wait till the end for a little real life studio humor by vocalist Cory Padilla.
