Spider Stories follows the tale of Princess Zahara who is thrown into hiding after the royal family is overthrown by a corrupt neighboring kingdom. While traveling with a misfit caravan of merchants she meets a wandering drummer griot who introduces her to the spirit world. Armed with a mystical staff, the fearless princess embarks on quest to reconnect with the spirits, reunite her homeland, and reclaim the throne.
We are developing an 11 minute animated pilot for a fantasy adventure series called Spider Stories. Your pledges will go towards funding a team of animators to get it done at a professional level of quality.
Once completed we'll be taking Spider on the road, pitching it to see if we can get it picked up with the goal of turning into a full fledged animated series.
Spider Stories is the product of a variety of influences. From Nigerian folk tales of the Tortoise and Anansi the Spider we heard growing up as children, to modern fantasy epics like Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Legend of Zelda, and Fire Emblem.
In those days there existed an alliance between Five Nations. The Head of these nations was protected by a guardian Spirit, passed down from generation to generation, to guide each monarch as they came of age.
However, a sudden attack has forced a young princess to flee before her inheritance rites were ever fulfilled. With her disappearance, the guiding light that once filled these lands with warmth has faded.
But the fearless Princess Zahara would not have her story end here. Now she travels with a misfit crew of merchants and a wayward griot with a magic drum, preparing to inherit the power of the Spirits and reclaim her lost kingdom.
A fearless princess, destined to inherit rule of the Five Kingdoms.
A a gifted warrior and a tech savvy teen, to her, formalities have always been in the way of getting things done. Still she has a bit more trouble relating to common people than she'd like to admit, but she hopes to soon be able to see her nation first hand instead of from behind the palace walls.
She's equipped with an ancient familial magic staff and a multipurpose tool strapped to her wrist that has gotten her in and out of a lot of trouble.
Responsible and brave, she hopes to one day be a great queen, and command the same presence as her mother
The wayward Drummer bound to Zahara.
He appears childlike, but hold the wisdom of ages. Who knows what his true nature is. Ayan is Zahara's Spirit Guide in completing her inheritance rites, and a Griot who is to chronicle her story.
But he's really more of a trickster. Easily distracted, and more caught up in his own interests than with doing his job. Between the Spider Spirit and the Princess, he's grudgingly kept on task.
He carries a Talking Drum, which allows him to speak with the ancient spirits and cast magic spells. Some days his job is too easy for him. Until the others learn to lighten up he's happy to spend his downtime pulling pranks and telling tall tales.
An all powerful spirit, bonded to the ruling Lion House, and tempered by a sense of mischief and humor.
The Spider is the Storyteller, the recorder and the author of history. His knowledge is boundless, as is his ability to sway others.
In every generation, he tests the ruler of the Five Nations to see if they are worthy to wield his power. After the Hawks attack, he was unable to properly test Zahara, but the thought of a trial in an uncontrolled environment he finds much more interesting after all. He won't make her journey an easy one.
We're natural born storytellers and so a project like this really comes out of our own passion for the craft. But its unique cultural vibe makes it all the more special.
Africans are largely absent from this genre, and from mainstream media as a whole outside of what Chimamanda Adichie described as The Single Story.
Spider challenges the single story in a way that's accessible to young audiences but deep enough for older ones.
If successful it'll be part of a worldwide shift in media made possible by communities and collaboration both in person and online. Communities just like this one on Kickstarter.
Risks and challenges
If funded our next steps will be developing past the 11 minute pilot and into a full fledged animated series.
We're already networking with interested folks in the entertainment industry that could help us get to where we need to be to pitch the series.
But even if we don't get picked up, the story of Spider won't end there.
We're reaching out to online communities and have a few back up plans to be aired online as an ongoing web series. Its really because of you guys around the world that we're taking our first steps. We want to make sure that wherever we go next, you'll be able to access it just as easily as you accessed this page.
Thanks for your support, stay tuned for updates.
