About

Project Tanuki is a high-speed battle racing game where up to eight competitors engage in an extended footrace. The field of play is largely two-dimensional, calling for unconventional racetracks which host various walls, gaps, blocks, and other innate obstacles akin to typical platforming. Courses can be linear or looped in structure, horizontal or vertical in orientation, and static or animated in environment.

Although monsters and baddies have no place on the map—save for story bosses—racers can hinder each other using their basic attacks, special abilities, and obtained items. Each character performs diversely in accordance to their speed, strength, and stamina attributes, which predominantly determine their advantaged strategy—respectively to outrun, outfight, or outlast the competition. Additionally, racers can briefly rely on transformative power-ups called blessings (selected prior to beginning a race) in handling dicey situations and covering their general weaknesses.

Our game heavily revolves around fluid mobility and combat, and we want to provide versatility in both core mechanics. Here is a preview of just a few functions that go beyond the basic running and jumping (note: not actual in-game screens):

Boosting, wall-jumping, air-dashing
Boosting, wall-jumping, air-dashing
Standard attack (melee), standard attack (ranged)
Standard attack (melee), standard attack (ranged)

Other intended functions include dodging, zip-lining, wall-clinging, power jumping, using items, using special abilities, and then some. Although not each of these is guaranteed to make the cut, our end goal will remain the same: plenty of motion, plenty of action.

Before each race, players choose between a variety of power-ups called blessings, which grant strengths and special skills based on their transformation. Although these allow for a huge advantage on the racetrack, they take up an equally huge amount of stamina in activation, so players won't be able to maintain their morphed states for long. Our intention is for players to use blessings to cover a character's inherent weaknesses as well as their disadvantages on any selected course.

Speed determines the maximum running velocity a player can reach. Secondarily, it influences acceleration, which determines how quickly a player reaches their top speed, and recovery, which determines how quickly a player regains energy.

Strength determines the damaging power of a player’s attacks, which exhausts or otherwise hinders the competition. Secondarily, it influences acceleration and jump, which determines how high a player can...well...jump.

Stamina determines how much energy a player has, thus how many actions they can perform before becoming exhausted (e.g. sprinting, attacking, transforming, et cetera). Secondarily, it influences jump and recovery.

Compete as one of eight runners in our world’s most highly renowned event: the Grand Prix. Each of its three cups contains four distinct courses, in which racers are rewarded points depending on how they place. After each track is completed, the contender with most collective points is deemed the cup victor, and the Changed Cats—deified hosts of the Grand Prix—shall personally bestow them the esteemed prize trophy.

Banzai Cup, which focuses on general structures and architecture:

In its first stage, Festive Grounds, natives celebrate the launch of the Grand Prix as racers zip on by. Boost ramps and wires are frequently placed near temple rooftops, so try to stay as high as you can in order to keep ahead of the game!

Sakura Cup, which showcases beautiful nature and outdoor scenery:

In Sakura Gardens, players get a pretty view of the surrounding cherry blossoms while being pitted against more organic obstacles. In most cases, running on water will save you time, but you'll need a boost to get by without sinking!

Satori Cup, which deals with our world's history and mythology:

This one looks rather imcomplete, doesn't it? That's because we need your help making it! The Market Square is jam packed with the mythological human, and we need your face and voice to fill the scene. Look to our reward tiers for details.

We hold to the belief that story is largely secondary to gameplay, so although we have a respectable adventure laid out for single players, it's nothing that takes itself too seriously. For now, here's what you need to know: The Changed Cats have been kidnapped for the purpose of reanimating the Nine-Tailed Fox, who has been trapped in her petrified state for millennia. Our heroes, Tobi and Kai, are sent to retrieve them and put an end to the kidnapper's plot. Like we said, it's nothing grandiose, but it's meant more for a casual ride. Along the way, you'll run into plenty of spirited characters, some of which can be unlocked to use in multiplayer (note: merely early concept art):

A lackadaisical monk with kooky sayings: "You only notice others sniff the moment you let a good one slip." His proverbs may be a bit useless, but rest assured, he has his tricks on the racetrack.
A lackadaisical monk with kooky sayings: "You only notice others sniff the moment you let a good one slip." His proverbs may be a bit useless, but rest assured, he has his tricks on the racetrack.

We're going to let you in on a little spoiler: our villain's plan to revive the Nine-Tailed Fox is ultimately thwarted in the end—shocking! Tobi pulls some dynamic stunts and successfully rescues the cute, little kitties to save the day, restoring balance to the world and yada-yada. But we're betting you actually want to see this showdown between Tobi and the Nine-Tailed Fox unfold—we most certainly do! See to our stretch goals for details.

Tobi is a kid tanuki who by and large embodies his species’ character as depicted in Japanese mythology, notably their prankishness and naivety. He is a master shapeshifter, like his kin, and is able to assume any imaginable appearance; despite this, he is most comfortable wearing his human aspect, one which his partner Kai teasingly describes as “barely human”.

For those of you wondering, Tobi's name means “flight” in the original Kanji text, a reference to the rapid movement the game encompasses, as well as a homage to Super Mario World, in which the tanuki suit grants the power of flight throughout levels. A second meaning is "kite", which explains why his special ability allows him to—

...errrr...do that. Anyway, let's move on to Kai.

Kai is one of the Changed Cats responsible for keeping peace and order in the land. That said, he's a pretty big slacker at that job, as he spends most of his time fooling around with Tobi and getting into trouble. He tends to be a bit badgering on a regular basis, but he's a good cat at heart. His name means "restoration", but that really has nothing to do with why he's named that. Rather, his species is a type of yōkai (or Japanese monster), which allows Tobi his witty greeting:

Evan's comments: "Hey there! I'm just a dude who loves games. Although I can say I'm the one with the ideas, it's no understatement that ideas are worth jack crap without the talent and support to back them up (and even the minds to add on them). These guys listed below are the true driving force behind this project. They've each already accomplished loads and have graced me in joining the team. Clicking on their portraits will link you to their respective pages, so be sure to check out their work."

Christian has been composing video game music for more than nine years, having worked on the soundtracks of Castle Crashers, Castlestorm, the Kawairun series, and more. Beyond that, his nonexclusive works have been featured in over two hundred Flash titles, and he was featured as Newground's Musician of the Year in 2008. We're excited to have him produce both our original soundtrack and audio effects in full.

Sabrina has studied 3D animation and computer generated imagery at Dawson College in Quebec, Canada. She has a passion for both art and video games, being a Game Jam enthusiast who enjoys putting her art to code. She created Tobi's and Kai's visual designs, as well as the look and feel of our levels. In the future, she will be tackling the production assets (objects, sprites, etc.) for our dynamic characters and general environments.

Mike is a graphic designer and motion graphics animator from Ontario, Canada. He studied Graphic Design at Algonquin College and is a freelance designer who works regularly with design agencies around Ottawa, Ontario. His role is in establishing our game's visual identity, namely in its user interface, font faces, and iconic images.

Christi joined the team a bit later than the rest, yet she has been just as instrumental in helping our project take shape. She is responsible for most of the visuals on this Kickstarter page, including the quirky comic strips and these cute, little ninjafied portraits we all got. Where production is concerned, she will be aiding Sabrina in character and environmental concepts, as well as handling general illustrations.

Dustin is a programming wizard, proficient in multiple scripting languages (i.e. C, C++, C#, JavaScript, Baisc, PASCAL) and more than experienced with the Unity3D game engine. His first indie titles were Gunship Alpha and Marble Dash, and he has since focused on more personal pet projects. He is here to do everything Evan cannot scripting-wise and to make sure the logical end of content is optimized to the fullest.

Lizz is a 19 year old singer and songwriter from Ontario, Canada. She has been featured on YTV's "The Next Star" as well as Canada's Walk of Fame Festival alongside names such as Suzie McNeil, Jully Black, and Serena Ryder. She has recently performed at the Rivoli venue in Toronto, and now she's here to help out with our project—to be more exact, she'll be producing a song for all backers who pledge to the $250 reward tier or higher, singing their names in a pleasant, flexuous melody. Should we reach certain stretch goals, Lizz will also come on board as a voice actor to provide even more sing-songy lines and quips of dialogue.

Somewhat on that note, perhaps this is a good time to bring up certain financial matters, like the breakdown of costs and promises in stretch goals: With the initial $25,000 funding, we're—

Yup, there it is. We believe that this base goal will allow us to produce the essential elements of our game. But let's say we end up getting more than we ask for: You should know that any additional funds will still be spent on the project, only allowing for added features that will bulk up our game in content. Take a look at what your extra support can help build:

To celebrate the gained momentum of our project, we will be providing new add-ons upon reaching certain milestones. These rewards are exclusive in-game content that will permanently retire as soon as our fundraiser ends; your only way to get them is here and now. Better yet, each will never go for more than a single dollar! Simply increase your pledge by $1 per desired add-on without changing your selected reward tier. Soon after the fundraiser ends, you'll receive a survey to confirm which add-on(s) you wanted.

Note: Celebration add-ons require a base pledge of $10 or more.

Risks and challenges

Undoubtedly, the biggest risk for backers is in knowing that we are not a seasoned development studio. Although we each have our own separate experience in game design—whether that be in programming, content production, or testing—this is the first project we will have worked on in a joint effort, so we are bound to run into some mishaps along the way. That said, we're completely familiar with the hurdles of creative design, and we're more than able to work together in clearing them as they come.

Should setbacks arise where development itself is concerned, we understand that communication is key. Beyond our intent to provide frequent updates on the game's progress, we will be upfront and verbal regarding any complications, laying out how we plan to go about them in full detail. Other than that, it comes down purely to production. We've taken care of the necessary planning up until this point, and launching the Kickstarter was a trial in itself. All that's left to do, with your help, is to make the game.
