About

Summit Training is a cycling training application that leverages modern data science methods to plan you workouts.

Other platforms mostly provide advanced analytics that makes it easier for you to plan your training. We went one step further, automated that behind the scenes to simply tell you how to ride and give you immediate feedback for every workout. We are bringing you an experience, similar to working with a coach, in a simpler package and at a lower price.

Nowadays cycling computers generate large amounts of data, making riding more interesting (e.g. STRAVA™ segments). Besides, this data can also be used to make you faster with proper training.

We love looking at numbers and performing various analyses, even if only to top the leaderboards on local climb. But it's time consuming and not everyone wants to do it, especially when you can barely fit riding into your busy schedule.

We've made Summit training as simple as possible while still providing a great training experience, so you'll have more time to ride and will always know if you're on the right track.

  • All rides are automatically synchronized from your STRAVA™ account, no manual uploads
  • Other platforms provide thousands of workouts for you to choose from. We pick the one that's best for you
  • For each workout you're assigned a grade and given actionable feedback to improve your training

In our beta version, a STRAVA™ account is required to sign up, all trainings are heart rate based (thus a heart rate monitor is required) and the lowest training volume is ~10 hours per week. We're already working on bringing you power based plans and plans with lower volume next.

After the official launch the base price for Summit Training will be 15€ monthly.

We have already been testing Summit Training with local bike clubs and some cycling communities. Have a look at some initial reactions and thoughts at:

Getting started is simple. Connect your STRAVA™ account and you're taken directly to creation of your annual plan.

The first step is to choose training periods. Each "Build & Peak" block ends with a week or 2 of top form, which you should distribute according to your racing goals, if you have any.

Next you'll choose your training volume. If you'd like to increase training volume from your last season, the increase should be at most 15%. If you're relatively new to cycling, even the current minimal 450 annual plan will be too much. We're working on bringing lower volume plans as soon as possible.

As the final step of plan creation, you can choose if you'd like to focus on any specific abilities, e.g. work more on climbing or sprinting.

For a completely tailored training plan, we need some more data. Before starting the plan you'll need to perform a test workout, consisting of:

  • a 5 minute all-out interval for warm up and
  • a 20 minute all-out interval

Our system will detect if you have followed the training protocol. If so, you'll be able to confirm test results and continue to your plan.

We use the initial test only to determine the FTHR value, the approximate maximal heart rate you are able to sustain for one hour. You can skip the first test by entering your FTHR, if you already know it.

Checking back after a ride

Every activity you upload to STRAVA™ is automatically synchronized and analysed. Workout instructions are updated with grade and feedback. Explore full analysis for more details and see how well you completed your interval work.

 

Since the original idea in December of 2015, we've been slowly working on making Summit Training a reality. Now we're ready to show our beta version, but we know we still have a long way to go.

Pre-launch beta. Our pre-launch beta is available exclusively to Kickstarter backers, is free to use and will be live until official launch in January of 2018.

Launch in January 2018. With your support we'll be able to launch in Jaunuary of 2018. Until then we will:

  • Work on improving the user experience, including a graphical and user interface redesign, as we have only done minimal work on it for our prototype
  • Improve our workout grading and interval detection algorithms, which is now possible with access to more data.
  • Add power based plans and plans with lower volume. We'll try to add both before launch, but depending on your feedback we'll initially only focus on one.

We are a team of computer scientists and sport scientists, some of us both. In a unique collaboration with professional cycling coaches we firmly believe we can create something new and exciting.

 

 

Beta version. Our beta version is available to anyone supporting on Kickstarter, at no other expenses than the reward pledge, until official launch in January 2018. It will be continuously updated with new features as we approach the launch. It will not be possible to gain access to beta after our Kickstarter campaign.

For beta access you will receive a singup code and link to our beta via Kickstarter message. Even for "immediate" access, we still need to send codes manually, so please allow 1 day for it. Note that heart rate monitor and a device, capable of recording and uploading heart rate data to STRAVA™ are required.

Free usage in 2018. Some rewards offer waived subscription fees in 2018, which would normally cost 15€*9 months = 135€ (assuming you don't want to pay for a training app during winter). The monthly subscription fee after launch will be 15€.

Tester mode. If you're interested how things work behind the scenes, this one is for you. In our tester mode you can run grading algorithms for any of your existing workouts and mock calendar date to see how plan adapts to various changes. Mock data can be easily reset to actual state with a single click, so you can still use the application as usual.

Risks and challenges

As with all software projects, one of the risks is inevitably shipping on time. Especially as we're developing new workout analysis methods, development of which can cause unexpected delays.

However, we have demonstrated with a working prototype that our algorithms are already functional and will only improve during the beta testing stage.

Another challenge we've been facing is collaboration between cycling coaches and computer scientists, which is not something you see every day. Nevertheless, some of us are into both computer science and sport science, which allowed us to bring the two sides together.

Additionally, we're currently entirely dependant on STRAVA™, as we get all training data from there. While they have allowed us to use their API for our purpose, we still plan to enable integration with other services, to avoid any unexpected problems.
