About

Cottonwood Camping and RV Park is centrally located in the heart of Downeast Maine in the rural coastal town of Columbia Falls. Our goal is to provide adventure camping with something for everyone.

Our campground is surrounded by 170 acres and situated right in the middle of the old railroad bed now called the Sunrise Trail bed. At Cottonwood you'll have access to this multi-use trail system right from your front door. This trail system stretches for more than eighty miles from beyond the town of Machias to the town of Ellsworth. From this trail system there are secondary trails that cover hundreds of miles throughout the entire Downeast area. You can be assured you'll have plenty of room to play!

While the trail bed is enjoyed by hikers, bicyclists, dog walkers, ATVers, dirt bike enthusiasts and horseback riders; it remains remote and quiet. With the generosity of many land owners you and I are able to enjoy access to some of the most remote parts of Maine.

The Sunrise Trail Bed

Columbia Falls is located in the center of this Trail Bed. You'll have access to more than 40 miles east to the coast or 40 miles west to Downtown Ellsworth as well as secondary trails to your north and south that will take you hundreds of miles throughout the Downeast area.

Hi I'm Shirley,

I’ve been working on my project for the past seven years, however, It began when I was a little girl on my grandparent’s farm in a small rural town in Maine. I was born in Boston Massachusetts, in a tough neighborhood. My five siblings and I were fortunate enough to spend our summers on the farm and eventually moved there. I enjoyed over a hundred acres of land with trails throughout the woods, a small pond to catch frogs and a barn full of hay to jump in. I especially enjoyed helping my grandmother with the many different animals she lovingly cared for. It was those days and those trails where my dream really began.

I’m an entrepreneur at heart. Even back then, I sold eggs to make money and had my mom running me around delivering them to my neighbors (who probably already had their own chickens and fresh eggs). My dad and I sold vegetables roadside for a couple of years. Horses, however, were my true passion. That’s when I started thinking about doing guided trail rides. Even though I had farm animals around me all the time, we didn’t have the kind of money needed to take riding lessons, let alone own horses.

I grew up, I moved away, and started a family of my own... but I never forgot about that dream. In fact, that dream grew into something even bigger. Having had all those wonderful memories of life on the farm, I would often think about how city kids never have the opportunity to experience nature the way I had; like catching frogs in a small pond or seeing a night sky full of stars. Wanting to share my passion for playing in the woods and on the farm I decided I needed to make a place for everyone to enjoy.  That is how Cottonwood began.

While I have already started my trail riding business, having spent the past twenty years working with horses and building the farm, I am now in pursuit of the rest of that dream. I began looking for the perfect piece of land. After having a few disappointments I found it...it was right in my own back yard. Located almost adjacent to the farm, through the woods, just a mile as the crow flies, this 170 acres is now Cottonwood.

I know that with the help and support of my family I have accomplished so much and that this campground will someday be many generations old. Yet, I still have so many things I need to do. I’m racing against time now...I'm not getting any younger. I need your help!

With your support we, together, can accomplish so much more! Together, we can build a place where future generations of kids and their families, both local and far away, might too be able to enjoy the kinds of experiences I have been so fortunate to have had.

I am asked all the time about adding ATV rentals, bicycle rentals, cabins, a swimming pool and a fishing pond. I would also love to offer a pavilion, playground and so much more! These are big-ticket items with lots of other costs associated with owning and maintaining them. These are just some of the goals and activities I hope to offer, not only to our campers, but many of these activities will be available for the people in the surrounding community.

At Cottonwood, along with our direct access to the trial bed from your front door, you will find big rig, full service pull through RV sites, back-in sites, tenting, group camping, and rental units as well as a beautiful bathhouse with laundry room.

We have two Teepees that can accommodate four to eight people and our largest one measuring 22 feet will be ready to rent soon. It will have a center fire pit and will be furnished with couches, tables and other items for your comfort.

We have recently added Little Bird Tiny cabin that accommodates two and is absolutely adorable!

Spinney Brook overlook Tree House!

When you travel Downeast, you are visiting the Blueberry Capital of the World. Be sure to make time to tour the blueberry barrens where you'll see thousands of acres of wild blueberry land. It doesn't matter what time of year you come it is awe-inspiring. Whether you bring your own all-terrain vehicle or have signed up to take a guided ATV tour; it is a must see!

Spring- Blueberries in blossom

Summer- Fruit bearing

      Fall- Blueberry foliage

On the baseline to the barrens check out Frog Rock!

As well as growing and harvesting Wild Maine Blueberries Downeast, it is also your go to place for Maine Lobster and the coveted Maine Balsam Wreath.

When staying with us you'll be in the center of all of the great places that Downeast has to offer. Be sure to check out some of these local attractions!

Look at what Cottonwood Camping and RV Park has already accomplished in our short four years developing from a grass roots effort. While our goal is to reach 30k, what if we raised $100,000? Imagine what we could do with that. With your help we can reach or exceed that goal.

We've selected a great set of rewards for you to choose from. Not much of a camper yourself? Our reward packages would make a great gift for any occasion for the camper in your life. We highly recommend a camping trip at cottonwood!

Don’t take our word for it...see what our Cottonwood friends have to say!

"Hands down one of the BEST campgrounds we’ve ever been to. They have AMAZING bathrooms. And Shirley goes above & beyond like having tents already set up for us & firewood ready to go!" Melissa, Bangor

“Cottonwood Campground was the highlight of my 2018 summer. My girlfriend and I traveled from PEI to Cottonwood for 3 nights in early September. We had a beautiful, private campsite next to a clean, rustic but modern bathhouse.

We brought our side by side and enjoyed 3 great days of trail riding. The views while riding through the nearby blueberry barrens were breathtaking, and the variety of trails in the area meant we could do easy riding or more technical stuff when we wanted.

Shirley and Mark at Cottonwood are great people. They gave us lots of ideas to help us plan our day trips and were very friendly! I am looking forward to traveling back in the spring of 2019 for more great trail riding, and to help Cottonwood develop their campground even further. If you’re looking for a quiet, rustic, REAL camping experience in Maine then check out Cottonwood!”

Jeremy Noonan, Canada

We all have a favorite hobby, sport or outdoor activity. While mine is horseback riding, others love ATVing, hiking, bicycling, traveling to different places, or simply enjoying sitting around the bonfire.

Whatever your passion, whatever your ride, at Cottonwood, you'll have the opportunity to play! Whether it's all-terrain vehicles, dirt bikes, bicycles, or even horses, it is our goal to provide you with the ultimate north-woods playground!

      Warmest regards,
      Shirley

Risks and challenges

Challenges:

Finding and paying for qualified help is the big challenge.
Purchasing, maintaining and servicing new ATVs will also be a big challenge.
Building housing for the horses at the campground is an expense I have not been able to afford, however, it remains a major part of my goal. I'd like to offer shelter for not only our own horses while at the campground but also for guests that visit the campground with their horses.
