Quest of Souls is a fantasy, twin-stick, shoot 'em up RPG adventure with over 180 skill upgrades, 7 unique endings, vivid pixel graphics, a story-driven experience...and a dragon-slaying corgi!
Quest of Souls is inspired by our favorite '90s SNES games like Pocky & Rocky, Super Smash TV, Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy III (SNES), and Gauntlet. If you like those games, Quest of Souls is for you!
Our vision is to revitalize the lost genre of multiplayer shooter RPGs. We want to combine the action from Pocky & Rocky with the ability customization of Final Fantasy III (SNES) and the RPG story depth of Chrono Trigger. Then, we throw in some Bioware/Bethesda-inspired dialogue systems and you have Quest of Souls!
Quest of Souls will have three-player co-op, three levels of difficulty (Casual, Normal, and Insano), 7 full levels in game, and secret unlockable story twists and characters!
The story revolves around three main characters: Brunhilde the Good Lich, Toki the Dragonslayer, and Yoshimbo the Ronin, and their quest to track down a powerful magical artifact that was stolen by a mysterious dark sorcerer.
Their trek takes them across a wondrous fantasy landscape with vastly different environments to explore and decisions that change not only the story and dialogue, but the actual levels themselves!
Wait, you said a lich, a dragonslayer, and a ronin?!
Yep. So, Brunhilde is a lich who uses her powers for good, Toki was once a noble fairy dragoon's corgi mount, and Yoshimbo is a ronin on a personal quest for redemption.
Brunhilde the Good Lich
Gameplay: Brunhilde’s primary attack is to launch flaming skulls at her opponents and then harvest their souls to summon undead minions. To defend herself from attackers she can form an ice wall to block incoming projectiles or conjure a soul shield to absorb magical attacks.
Story: Brunhilde spent years at a prestigious wizard's college, learning everything she could about fighting evil magic and the undead. Eventually, her research and studies led her to believe the only way to fight fire was with fire and she hid her soul away, granting herself immortality in the process. She was feared and shunned because of her extreme dedication, so she took to a life of monster-hunting and adventure. The urgency of retrieving the valuable artifact has brought her to the company of Toki & Yoshi.
Toki the Dragonslayer
Gameplay: Toki’s primary attack is the powerful projection of her sonic bark. Toki can charge up this attack to not only deal more damage, but also bypass some enemies’ armor. As a defensive maneuver, Toki can release a debilitating area of effect bark to fend off incoming enemy attacks. If Toki avoids enemy damage for an extended amount of time, she begins to regenerate lost health thanks to her “Corgi Perfection” ability.
Story: Toki was trained since birth to be a noble fairy warrior's war mount. It was the Prince of the fairies himself who chose Toki to ride into battle. They saw countless skirmishes with warring pixie and imp tribes, but when the threat of evil dragons loomed over their forest, the 2 decided to act. The Prince and Toki led a group of Dragoons to hunt down all evil dragons.
Unfortunately, in a climactic battle with an ancient and terrifying red dragon, the Prince was swallowed whole and Toki suffered the loss of her eye in the process. Toki then barked to the heavens and the Fairy Queen responded to her, granting Toki the celestial powers of the Fey Court. Toki used her new form to obliterate the dragon, barking through space and time to eradicate the dragon from history. For her services, the Fairy Queen deemed Toki would never have another rider, and she was free to pursue her own happiness. Toki's adventures have led her to travel with Yoshi, where they met Brunhilde.
Yoshimbo the Ronin
Gameplay: Yoshimbo’s primary attack is a quick slash that creates a sonic wave projectile to decimate his opponents. Yoshi can change his sword stances from offensive to defensive at will. In offensive stance, his projectiles are faster and deal more damage but he takes more damage. In defensive stance, he can hit projectiles back at his attacker but his movement is restricted.
Story: Yoshimbo was once the Captain of the Honor Guard for the Emperor of the Sand Kingdom. Bound by a code of honor, Yoshimbo served the Emperor and was sworn to protect him with his life.
An evil corruption overtook the Emperor's council and it eventually affected the Emperor himself. Yoshimbo was the kingdom's only hope, and he set out to cleanse his home of evil.
After the deed was done, Yoshi could not tell the kingdom their Emperor was corrupt, therefore he was considered dishonored for not protecting the Emperor. Very few know the truth, so Yoshi is destined to wander without a master to serve and a purpose to pursue, until now...
King Crow Studios is part of a video game incubator at the Louisiana Technology Park in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In collaboration with other video game companies like Pixel Dash Studios, BitFinity Games, Starblade Games, and Jetstreame Games, we hope to work with the community to make games that we can all enjoy and provide entry-level experience for local game developers.
The talent going into this game comes from all across Louisiana. We hope to show off how vibrant the gaming community is here by having almost every other existing indie company contribute in some way to the game. Every one of us has been chosen to be a part of this game because we all think this is an awesome idea and want to see it succeed. We will do our best to show you our progress so we can prove how hard we are working and how seriously we all want this to be amazing.

The funds gained from a successful Kickstarter campaign allows us to finish the game this year. Most of the team works on this game in their spare time in addition to running their own companies, taking classes to acquire new degrees, working other full-time jobs, and spending time with their families. Giving them the option to be able to support themselves fully while creating our game will accelerate our production cycle and allow us to finish development by Halloween of this year.
So, why so much dedicated to programming? We have a plethora of artists dedicated to the cause and they have made a cornucopia of assets. These assets are waiting to be integrated into Quest of Souls and this Kickstarter will provide the funds needed to do that.
We were Greenlit on Steam in 12 days and we have a demo on Steam!
Download the playable demo on Steam to see the progress yourself!
Click on the 'Download Demo' button when you get there.
We have a lot of art assets waiting to be implemented in the game. As soon as we get funding, we can begin a programming sprint (game development cycle of focused work), and implement a ton of content. Over the last several months we have been polishing the core gameplay mechanics so that the most important elements are as fun as they can possibly be.
We went to PAX South 2016 and since then we have been fixing bugs and improving gameplay. We hope you enjoy what we have so far, and if you beat the demo it unlocks our mini-game Necroball to play against your friends!

Game Disclaimer: All digital copies of all games offered on this Kickstarter will be given to you as a Steam key. This means you'll need a Steam account and a working PC with Windows or Linux, or a Mac to play them.
This also means that you can give those keys away as gifts! If you already own Road Redemption or Tadpole Treble, then let a friend have the key or save it to gift during a holiday. You can always trade your game for another game via the Steam trade forums!
Additionally, we know a couple of these games have not been released. If for some reason our partners don't get their games out, anybody who receives a bundle tier will be able to get two copies of Quest of Souls instead of a copy of one of the games offered. This also goes for if they go far past their expected release dates and you would rather get the 2 copies of QoS.
You'll still get the exclusive in-game events unlocked with all the game bundles, being as they are in Quest of Souls and not the other games.
If you are reading this, then thanks for reading all the text on our Kickstarter! YOU are our kind of person. :) Once you beat the demo, you'll unlock some cool special features!
Risks and challenges
Meeting set deadlines and milestones is a problem that a lot of startup studios run into. They fall off the map, go dark, and the next post you hear from them is a "we ran out of money, sorry" response.
We will not be one of these companies. We have Directors of Finance, Marketing, and Communications to work with as part of the incubation agreement with the Louisiana Technology Park. The staff there works every single day with the video game companies to make sure they are on track, and provide insight to the structure and reasoning behind running a successful business.
We also have members of other currently running indie game companies to help when we need it. Need some programming help? We have mentors at the Park for that, and contractors who work like mercenaries between game companies helping whoever needs reinforcement. Need artists or graphic designers? Independent contractors and in-house businesses are available for every digital art need imaginable.
The lead positions on the development team of Quest of Souls are comprised of game developers who have been working in the industry for years. Part of what makes the LA Tech Park great is that it is the hub for game development in Baton Rouge, LA. For us, programming and art assistance comes from Pixel Dash Studios, Artistic direction and a plethora of pixels come from Starblade Games, and the entire score is composed by Matthew Taranto of BitFinity Games. There are tons of people available for support and guidance at any time.
With all of these resources available, we still understand the road before us is laden with responsibility and lots of work. These experiences are something we hope to share with you via social media as the development process goes on. It is our pledge to our backers to keep you updated with goals, progress, exclusive concept peeks, and work our hardest to keep our development cycle as transparent to our supporters as possible.
