The Baby Project is an original musical comedy that gives voice to the changing face of the American family.

ALL DONATIONS ARE 100% TAX DEDUCTIBLE!

This original musical theatre comedy tells the story of a single, bisexual, underemployed New York woman who heads west to plant new roots and build a family of her own. In Los Angeles, while navigating the business of medically-assisted fertility, she quickly learns that family can come to you in the most unconventional ways. As the protagonist juggles work, romance, sperm banks and traffic jams, she traverses the complicated web of the LA Unified School district, the LA foster care system and an HMO. Ultimately  THE BABY PROJECT gives voice to the changing face of the American Family.

- The Road Theatre is producing THE BABY PROJECT, which will have performances in February of 2013. www.roadtheatre.org

- The Road Theatre has received a $20,000 NEA grant in order to produce and develop THE BABY PROJECT. We have to match the grant by raising $20,000 more on Kickstarter.

 - THE BABY PROJECT is written by Lori Ada Jaroslow, with composer/lyricist Fonda Feingold, additional music by Noriko Olling, additional material by Michael Schiralli and under the direction of Shannon MacMillan.

 - This original musical comedy promotes compassion, tolerance and acceptance.

A HISTORY OF THE BABY PROJECT

At the beginning of this century, I started writing a solo show as a vehicle for myself as an actress and writer. Now, I'm too old to play myself, but the project lives on.  At that time, I was longing to start a family of my own and was busy trying to get pregnant with the aide of medically assisted fertility; a process marked by awkward moments, comic mishaps, possibility and loss.  This wild ride would prove to be the centerpiece of my story.

Having spent my twenties and thirties singing on Broadway, I knew that my solo show was destined to be a musical. I called one of my favorite composers, Fonda Feingold, to collaborate on the project. We co-wrote some of the lyrics and before long, it was evident that we had more than just a one-woman show on our hands.  THE BABY PROJECTevolved into a five-character musical that progressed significantly from its autobiographical roots.

During the genesis of the project, Fonda and I had been collaborating virtually from opposite coasts.  As the show developed, the 3,000-mile divide was growing harder to bridge and we discovered that I needed a second colleague closer to my home in Los Angeles. Noriko Olling, an amazing composer and musician, who had accompanied our readings in Los Angeles and produced all of our demos, came on board.  Noriko and I sat down and co-wrote the song, Could We Be.  Since then, her musical contributions have been significant and she has become a critical addition to the creative team.

Four years ago I re-dedicated my focus to this project, making it my mission to see it completed and fully produced.  In 2008, I became a member of the Road Theatre Company. The Road is a wonderful award-winning theatre in North Hollywood dedicated to developing new plays and playwrights.  In 2010, I was invited by The Road to mount a reading of THE BABY PROJECT as part of the 2010 Summer Playwright’s Festival.  The response was tremendous. The Road’s Artistic Directors, Taylor Gilbert and Sam Anderson, proposed submitting the project for an NEA Grant. In 2011 we learned that we had been awarded $20,000, from the National Endowment for the Arts, for the continued development and production of THE BABY PROJECT. What an honor!

One interesting aspect of this project is how my personal life has shaped this story and, equally, how this process has led to amazing and unexpected outcomes in my real life.  It took years for me to settle on an ending for my story.  Subsequently, two years later, I am living out that ending. My family has grown in a way I never envisioned.  Life, for me, has definitely imitated art. Now, with the support of The Road, THE BABY PROJECT is on the brink of being born.

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING...

"Lori Jaroslow is a comic genius.” Marilyn Stasio of Variety and the New York Times

“I am really really impressed with Jaroslow’s writing. Nothing’s harder than comedy. It’s got to be all the way there or it’s nowhere. THE BABY PROJECT is totally engaging, with a really good book. The lyrics are punchy and peppy and funny. I laughed my ass off at the same time as I suffered for the heartache that also imbues the story. It’s funny, it’s sad, it’s angry, it’s happy: in other words, it’s human! Fabulous, show!” Professor Richard Walter, UCLA Screenwriting Chairman

“It's not easy to make people laugh and Lori does." Tom Musca, Writer/Producer, Stand and Deliver.

"Funny. Sad. Personal. Universal. Specific. Metaphoric. Moving." Ron Leibman, Tony award winner, Angels in America

"A revealing and poignant look at a universal dilemma.” Jessica Walter, Arrested Development, Archer

"Wonderfully entertaining, moving and impressive." Judd Pillot, Executive Producer of Coach, Just Shoot Me, and Eight Simple Rules.

“Intriguing, funny, touching and accurate. I grew up in the foster care system.” Samantha Rose Lockhart

"THE BABY PROJECT'S songbook is a modern twist on the musical theatre genre, fused with an eclectic range of groove-oriented musical styles, including: Jazz, Rock, Hip-Hop and Pop. However contemporary, The Baby Project is full of deep, rich harmonic compositions topped with animated lyrics embedded in enduring melodies." Chay Alexander Wright, Producer

Thank you SO much for your interest and support. NO donation is too small. Thank you also to friends and family too numerous to mention who have supported us tirelessly thus far; financially, artistically and otherwise. We could never have gotten here without you.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter

Every project has risks and challenges.

One that we are faced with is that we are opening a show in a brand new arts complex. Exciting as this is, it poses a myriad of challenges in itself, along with the complex nature of producing a musical. The wonderful thing is that we have the current Road Theatre space at The Historic Lankershim Arts Center as a backup.

If you've never participated in a Kickstarter campaign you may not know that if we don't reach our goal of $20,000.00 in sixty days, we don't receive any of the funds at all and we do need to match the NEA grant. Therefore I reiterate, no donation is too small and all are tax deductible. All of the creative team and company members are committed to passing this along to everyone we know so that we will meet our goal. Thank you again so much for your support.
