Alot of GOOFY stuff to share!!!
A couple of fun pics & a link to share, which were instrumental in obtaining some of the interviews.....But first, the ANDY SERKIS clip from 'Topsy Turvy' where he plays the 'eccentric choreographer' John D'Auban! A wonderful film too!
GOOFY!!! The consummate 'eccentric dancer & my inspiration to not only becoming a Disney animator, but when I teach eccentric, I always use him as a model. His body language, walks, gestures, voice, clothing....he is 'art in motion'! Made a 'star' at the Walt Disney Studios by the great animator ART BABBITT, who referenced BUSTER KEATON & STEPPIN' FETCHITT (Lincoln T. Perry) as inspiration, was developed further by another stellar animator, WARD KIMBALL, who spoke of Goofy's defining walk cycle at 360 degrees. I STILL marvel at the powerful connection between the two art forms: Eccentric Dance & Animation BOTH rely on the same process.....strong character development, story, a reason for movement, action & reaction, and how they set up a gag.
Here are a few sample GOOFY'S I created to help me get the interview! A Goofy as 'Freddie the Freeloader' for RED SKELTON.....a 'Nutty Professor' Goofy for JERRY LEWIS & A 'Nijinsky' Goofy for American Ballet Theater's LINCOLN KIRSTEIN! "A girls' gotta do what a girls' gotta do to get these guys to talk to me!!!" HA... I always drew a Disney character as a 'thank you' for ALL 45 of my interviews. I have to laugh how that broke the 'celebrity' wall & how cool it was to see them become kids again! I loved every second.....no matter how long it may have taken.....
