About

Hi! We’re Enda. We deliver high quality running gear, coaching, and advice for the global running community. All our products are proudly made in Kenya.

Here’s 3 things to know about what we’re doing right now:

A daily trainer designed to take you through most of your weekly mileage with comfort and style. It’s a shoe born in the highlands of Kenya, with long winding dirt roads serving as our laboratory.

The Lapatet is more than a great performance running shoe. It is covered with little bits of Kenyan culture that we want to share with the world.

We founded Enda to provide high quality running gear, coaching, and advice for the global running community while also driving development in Kenya. We pursue this mission of social-impact in three main ways:

Job creation and economic development

We started by working with a local flip-flop factory and helping them produce the first ever world-class running shoes made in East Africa. This has the immediate impact of employment for the 22 people who produce our shoes and also helps introduce new industrial processes to Kenya, including most recently modern strobel stitching.

Here's a look at the first time we made shoes, thanks to our previous Kickstarter campaign.

Enda Community Foundation

We give a portion of the purchase price of each pair of shoes to community initiatives in Kenya. Importantly, we engage our global community of Enda runners in the process of deciding which organisation to support, helping connect runners around the world with real impact in Kenya. In October 2018, we gave out our first community grant with the participation of more than 300 Enda runners, many of whom took part in our first Kickstarter campaign.

Here is a look at the three finalists for our first grant. We hope you'll join for the next one.

Changing the way the world sees Kenya

Kenya is famous for running, but it’s so much more. A beautiful and diverse country that can produce top quality creative and artistic goods. In the same way that German engineering and Italian fashion have meaning as global brands, we want to help the world see Kenya as a place that makes world class fashion and creative products.

The main reward for the campaign is, of course, the Lapatet. However, there are a couple of other special treats.

Become an Enda Weartester - $1500

This reward is available exclusively to people in Kenya or the USA who wear a men’s US 8.5 or women’s US 10, as those are the sizes we use for product development.

On top of getting a pair of Lapatets, for 18 months, we will send you one pair of each round of sample shoes we make. This should be about 4-5 pairs. You’ll discuss the experience with our design team and your feedback will be included with that of our elite athletes as we make revisions and improve the shoes. Plus, you’ll be getting shoes that literally no one else has.

Visit the Home of Champions - $5000

See how the magic happens. Over the course of two weeks you will visit Iten, the home of running champions to train with Enda Elite athletes and meet some of the legends of Kenyan running. You’ll spend time with the Enda team in Nairobi, and go to the Kenyan coast to get hands-on in factory where we make Enda shoes learning how to do each step of the process.

Per-Kickstarter rules, if traveling from outside Kenya, you’ll be responsible for your own flights and travel insurance. For factory visit, travel dates will correspond to Lapatet production dates in December 2019.

We started the design process for the Lapatet more than 18 months ago. Relentlessly obsessing over every detail until we got a shoe that was as exciting to look at as it is to run in.

We did 3 rounds of weartest sampling. Collectively Enda Elite athletes Joan, Suzie, Daniel, Faith, and Kemboi ran thousands of kilometers in prototypes and gave their feedback to fine-tune even the most minute details of the Lapatet.

If this campaign is successful, we’ll be able to bring it to production and ship you shoes along this schedule.

Here is why we can't do this without you

$80,000 is our goal for this campaign, as that’s what we’ll need to make the Lapatet.

However, that just covers the material and production costs. Nearly half of our goal amount will go toward creating the molds needed to make the midsoles and outsoles.

So hopefully we can go far beyond this goal!

Who we are

Hi! When we say "we" it means a whole community of people making Enda. But the person typing it is often one of us two co-founders: Navalayo “Nava” Osembo and Weldon Kennedy. We met 4 years ago over a mutual interest in dramatically increasing the amount Kenya benefits from its well earned reputation in running.

You'll select your size, color, and provide your shipping details after the campaign is over.

When that time comes, the most important thing to know is the Lapatet is built off the same last (that's the foot-shaped mold that determines the size and shape of a shoe) as our Itens. So if you’ve had a pair of Enda shoes in the past year, just order the same size here and you’ll be all set.

If you haven’t worn Endas, then here are some things to know for fitting:

  • Our shoes have designed to fit snugly around the foot, like a sock. So if you have a larger volume foot, you might want to go up half a size.
  • Our shoes are very slightly longer than average. So if you could use more space up front, then perhaps keep the same size and we’ll give you that space.
  • If you’re unsure, we recommend using a Nike Free or Adidas Pure Boost to get a sense of what size you’ll want.
  • You generally want running shoes to be ½ size to a full size larger than casual shoes you wear. The result should be about a finger’s width of space in front of your toes. You’ll need this space as your feet swell when running and slide forward a bit when running downhill.

Important note for previous Kickstarter supporters: when we ran our first Kickstarter campaign, we got clear feedback that significant number of backers found the shoes to be small (some found it too large, but a much smaller number). We fixed that by moving all sizes half a size up. So if you haven't bought Enda shoes since that last campaign, the sizing advice above applies.

There are three groups for shipping:

1. In Kenya: we’ll deliver straight to your physical address.

2. In the US: we ship freight to the US and then mail your package using USPS.

3. In the rest of the world: we use DHL to ship shoes from Kenya. This means a few things.

First, and more importantly, the price of the shipping is higher in those countries. We’ve worked hard with DHL over the past year to get the price as low as possible, but it’s still high.

Second, depending on your local laws, you may have to pay import duty for the shoes. The amount of duty will depend on your country and is your responsibility. For this campaign, we have a shipping arrangement that means backers in the EU will not have to pay duty on arrival.

Finally, while we can offer free exchanges in Kenya and the US, outside of those two countries, you’ll be responsible for any shipping and other costs associated with an exchange.

Risks and challenges

After our first Kickstarter campaign in 2016, we predicted it would take 6 months to finish the shoes and ship them to backers. In the end it took us 12 months, mostly down to two main reasons:

First: immediately after our last Kickstarter campaign, two of our suppliers pulled out. We sent up a relationship with new vendors, both for materials in China and production in Kenya. This change was responsible for about 5 months of the delay.

Second: our shipping processes were inadequate for Kickstarter scale, and it took us a month to sort, pack, and ship all the shoes.

We’ve fixed both of these issues, with new suppliers in both China and Kenya and more robust fulfillment processes in the US and Kenya. Having produced shoes multiple times now, we’re confident in being able to hit the timelines and product quality we show in this campaign.

Still, some risks do remain.

New production process
Making this shoe is a new construction process, and will include new processes at the factory in Kenya. We’ve planned ample time for this in our production timeline, but it is still partially an unknown until we actually make several thousand Lapatets.

International shipping
For customers outside of Kenya and the US, there isn’t an elegant solution for shipping. Due to the volume those take up, they are relatively expensive to ship compared to the value and the weight of the product. Additionally, some countries have very complex tariff systems in place for footwear, and the judgement of a customs officer can come into play when determining how much duty to charge on a pair of shoes.

The result is that for some people, the international shipping experience might be fine, and for others it could be a pain. We’ll work hard to communicate with you throughout this process, but want to give you advanced warning that there might be issues we are unable to fix in this process.

Sizing
Every shoe fits every person differently. People have different shaped fit, and brands make different shaped shoes. After our first Kickstarter campaign we received complaints both that the shoes were either too big and that they were too small. Given that it is easier to wear a shoe that is slightly large, we adjusted our sizing to make them half a size larger across the lineup. Still, sizing issues may remain for some. We can offer free exchanges in the US & Kenya, but given the nature of a Kickstarter campaign with all shoes being produced based on demand, these exchanges may take some time especially for less common sizes.
