I'm excited to begin working on my first solo EP- "Kiss The Enemy" this fall and for the opportunity to share it with you!
It's been six years since Trees of Lyres (a band consisting of my wife Joanie and I) released our album "Strangers" and a lot has changed.
We moved to Austin, Texas.
We had 2 daughters, Bella and Imogen, and are expecting a son, Noah in November.
We started a recording studio to help our friends make music.
I went back to school.
Along the way I've written a lot of songs, and I've been dying for the opportunity to share them. This fall, the time seems right to stop making excuses and to finally release some new music.
So that's what's going to happen. This fall I am going to release my first solo EP. It will be recorded in our home studio and at our friends houses. It will be a collection of 5 songs ranging from the first song I wrote after we finished recording "Strangers" to the newest song I've written.
What will the album be about? Well first, the songs on "Kiss the Enemy" are almost all exclusively stories. The EP will explore love, murder, work, and redemption through different stories ( that are mostly made up) and characters (that are not made up). And this story telling focus is going to influence the sound of the EP. I want the album to be sound both very personal and expansive. While those concepts might be seen at odds, I think there is something meaningful to be found in trying to hold those in tension. Long story short? As a storytelling album it will be strongly influenced by Americana. And because I want it to tackle these age old subjects in fresh ways its going to also be characterized by experimental sounds, song structures, and production. I humbly submit that it might sound like Ryan Adams crossed with Brian Eno.
I can't wait to share it with you!
I have the songs and I have the recording studio. I need your help for the things I can't do myself. When you back the project you are helping pay for the mastering of the EP (approx. $500) and for the artwork, website, and promotion of the EP. (approx. $500). Any money that I raise over the $1000 mark will go continue to go towards making the best album possible through more production, promotion and time.

Risks and challenges
Recording the album myself: Over the last 6 years I've produced and engineered 5 eps and a number of singles for other bands and musicians. I feel confident in my ability to make a great album and to deliver it to you on time.
By releasing the album in January 2014 I'll have ample time to record, mix, and master the album as well as fulfill all the rewards for backers.
