Hi everyone!

Thank you for having a look at my 32nd Kickstarter campaign!  My name is Pat Mitchell, and I'd like to introduce you to the IR-XY Multi-Program Linear Actuator & Dual Electromagnetic Lock Driver Board!  You can even drive a bipolar DC motor with this bad boy, if you so choose!  

This driver board allows for you to control one 12v linear actuator, or one DC motor, or up to two electromagnetic locks using the following on-board features:

  •  Sound - There is an on-board microphone that allows for you to use sound to actuate the connected devices.  A double-clap program comes already pre-installed in the board!
  •  Light - There is a light sensor on the board that allows for you to either use light or darkness to actuate the connected devices.  A program for this come pre-installed as well.
  •  Buttons - Use the SEL1 or SEL2 buttons at any time to actuate the connected devices in either direction!
  •  Infrared - The on-board IR sensor works in conjunction with most Infrared remote controls, and a program comes pre-installed so that you can get started actuating the connected devices right out of the box with a remote control!
  •  Wireless/Long Distance - An NRF24L01+ Transceiver module plugs into the IR-XY board, which can communicate with another NRF24L01+ module.  A program comes pre-installed, and you have the option of pledging towards an NRF24L01+ Arduino Shield, which will allow for you to wirelessly control your actuator from far away!  

Here are some of the additional features!:

  • On-Board reset button
  • 5x installed programs
  • You have the ability to take the provided sample code, and create your own programs using your Arduino UNO!  Commented code will be provided to pledges at the end of the campaign.
  • Select the program that you want to use on power-up
  • Select between latching and momentary driving actions (Decided by jumper placement)
  • 2x On-Board LEDs
  • Use one power supply to power the connected devices and the digital electronics, OR connect two power supplies; one to power the connected devices, and one to power the digital electronics.  This is completely up to you.
  • LOW-POWER!  This driver board uses field effect transistors, and not relays.  This helps to significantly lessen the current consumed by the digital electronics.  

 The Light Sensor (LDR), Microphone, and IR Sensor:  All of the sensors are located on the upper left of the diagram above.  These are fun extras that allow for us to add real functionality at low cost.

The Selection Headers & LEDs:  These are located on the upper side of the circuit board.  The final iteration of the circuit board will be a little different.  The FORWARD and BACKWARD (Red and Green) Indicator LEDs are here too.  The LDR/MIC header allows for us to select between the microphone and the light sensor.  That header is only used in one of the five programs.  The selection headers will be talked about more in the video manual, which is talked about more below.

The Linear Actuator/Electromagnetic Lock Connector Terminals:  These are all located on the right side of the PCB.  Connecting your external hardware is easy, and will also be covered in detail in the upcoming video manual!

The Power Jack/Power Terminal Block: These are located on the lower left side of the PCB.  Power the board and external devices with a power supply that has a male DC jack, or connect your power supply wires directly to the terminal block.  The choice is yours.

The Reset Button, and the SEL Buttons:  These buttons are highlighted in a blue box in the above diagram.  The reset button allows for you to reset the program without having to remove power.  The SEL buttons act to toggle the states of the electromagnetic locks/linear actuator.  They also help you to select which program you want to execute on power up.

The NRF24L01+ Tranceiver Connector: This is where you'd optionally connect your NRF24L01+ module for wireless control.  It plugs right in!

Applications:

With this board, you can drive one 12v linear actuator, or up to two electromagnetic locks at one time.  You can substitute the linear actuator with a bi-polar motor.  The hardware can support a bidirectional motor if you'd like, but you will write your own PWM code to support it.  With that said, the applications are completely up to you!  Your imagination is the limit!  Here are a few ideas:

  • Escape Rooms and Secret Rooms
  • Hidden Compartments
  • Man Caves & Wine Cellars
  • Book-case doors / hidden doors
  • Panic rooms
  • Hobby Projects 
  • Museum Displays

The 5x Installed Programs:

"Just Buttons" Mode:  In this program, the SEL1 and SEL2 buttons are used to toggle the states of the mag locks, or linear actuator.  Depending on the jumper states on the selection headers, you can make it so that a button press will trigger a latched action where the linear actuator opens or closes completely, or a momentary action where the linear actuator will move only as long as you are pressing the button.  The action will stop when you let go.  

Infrared Remote Mode: In this program, you can use an infrared remote-control to control the mag locks or linear actuator.  Any 38kHz compatible IR remote control will be compatible.  Many reward tiers include a remote.  This is a close-to-mid range wireless option that you can use to control the state of the mag locks, or actuator.

Wireless Mode:  In this mode, you can use your own NRF24L01+ device to communicate with the IR-XY board wirelessly, and from much further away than in Infrared Remote Mode.  Some rewards will include an NRF24L01+ Arduino shield.  Code samples will be provided.  You can control up to 5x IR-XY boards with said shield.  This will be talked about in detail in the assembly video.

Knock Mode:  In this mode, two loud claps in succession will toggle the state of the linear actuator or electromagnetic lock(s).  Pretty simple.  Lots of fun!

Light Sensor Mode:  You guessed it.  The level of light that the IR-XY is exposed to will dictate the state of the linear actuator or electromagnetic lock(s).

The Accessories!:

The 12v 8" stroke linear actuator that comes with some reward tiers in this campaign is pretty awesome.  It comes with all mounting hardware and brackets.  This can be used to open hidden compartments, doors, and so much more.  As long as you're using a sufficient power supply, you can use your own linear actuator with this set, as long as it is 12v.  I encourage this.  Unfortunately, due to the size and weight of heavier reward tiers, I can only ship to Canada and the US, as I am not able to come up with shipping quotes for all countries. Shipping large items overseas is insanely expensive, which is why I encourage locally purchasing linear actuators and mag locks if you are overseas.

The 60kg electromagnetic lock is just one of the many 12v mag locks out there that you can use.  As long as you use a sufficient power supply, you can use your own mag locks.  The 12v 2A power supply talked about below is perfect for up to two 60kg mag locks.  Even 2x larger mag locks that take up to 600-800mA each can be powered with a single 12v 2A wall adaptor.

The 12v 2A AC-DC wall adaptor (120-240VAC to 12VDC 50/60Hz) is perfect if you're only interested in powering mag locks.  This will work for smaller linear actuators, but not many.  For most linear actuators, you're going to want larger power supplies, like the 12v 10A AC-DC wall adaptor:

The NRF24L01+ Arduino shield is an optional extra.  This is actually part of a recent Kickstarter campaign.  You can connect this to your Arduino, and easily control your linear actuator or mag locks wirelessly throughout your home!  Of course, sample code will be provided, so that you can get going right out of the gate!

Project Schedule:

This campaign is a little bit longer than most of my Kickstarter campaigns, and the reason for this is that I want to really attack the programs so that they are incredible by the time the campaign is finished.  The PCB layout is completed, and ready to go.  The first week of this campaign will be dedicating to updating the programs, and to making a more in-depth project video for you all to see.  The first week is almost always when my campaigns receive the most views and pledges, so by the end of week#1, I should be able to get a good idea of what hardware I'll need to manufacture and order.

The second and third weeks of this campaign will mostly be dedicated to readying and submitting orders for manufacturing and accessories.  I should also have the software polished by this point.  The software is already done, but I want to polish it.  

The final two weeks of this 40-day campaign will be dedicated to ensuring that manufacturing is complete, and that the video manual/assembly videos are completed.  The project page will also be updated by this time.  Just an FYI, I always manufacture in advance, as long as the campaign has been funded.

Two weeks after this campaign ends is when I will be shipping (Late September/Early October).   As soon as this campaign ends, reward surveys will be sent.  That is, as long as this project is successful.  All project related information (Commented code/videos, etc) will at this point be on the project page (Linked above), and the hardware should all be ready to go.  I always ship on time or early.  Over 30 successful campaigns, I've mostly been able to ship early.  Otherwise, I have always shipped on time, with exception to one campaign, which shipped only a few days later than I had hoped to ship.  I've got a good track record for this.  Many pledges receive rewards before Kickstarter has even forwarded the funds from the campaign =)

Risks and challenges

In 30x successful campaigns, I've been late shipping out only once, and only by a few days. More often than not, I ship early. When I don't ship early, I ship on time! I have solid relationships with my component sources, and PCB fab company. I also have a solid relationship with their assembly department. All kitting I do with my wife. While there are always risks in any campaign, I've been fortunate to have enough success to get really good at shipping rewards FAST! Long-lasting design

These boards are all designed using through hole/DIP components, which means that if something ever gets damaged, it can easily be replaced!

Reusability and recyclability

This board was designed to be repaired, and not replaced. You can use this board for so many different projects! When you want to change things up, swap out the linear actuator for a couple of mag locks, or change the means of control. There are five means of control! Heck, you can even start playing with 12v bipolar DC motors if you'd like!

Sustainable fulfillment and distribution

I package up all rewards personally. I sometimes ask my wife to give me a hand when she's not busy. All packages are also shipped locally, and by my hands. There is no distribution company. I am the one who knocks!
