About

Hi everyone!

My name is Patrick, and I'd like to thank you for having a gander at my 33rd Kickstarter campaign!  This is the FAST RFID reader!

It can program up to five different 13.56MHz RFID cards to EEPROM memory in under twenty seconds!  No computer or external program needed!  It is very inexpensive, and ready to play with right out of the box!  Just power up with the program jumper set to short the "B" setting, and wave up to five RFID cards over the reader to save them to memory.  Once the fifth has been read, the blue program LED will stay on.  From there, power down and switch the program jumper over to the "A" setting (Scanning mode), and you're off to the races!  There is an FTDI header on the under side of the board in case you want to re-program the reader with your Arduino UNO!  Commented code samples will be provided at the end of the campaign.

This set features the MFRC522 RFID reader, and was designed so that all processing could be done one one board, and without the direct connection of an Arduino UNO.  When a correct card is read, it sends card- specific signals to the two dedicated output lines, which can be connected to your Arduino or Raspberry PI.  This unit requires 5v to operate, so it can be powered directly by your UNO.  The FAST RFID reader talks to your Arduino with ease, and only requires a few lines of code (Provided and commented) in order to determine which card was read.  If a card is read that was not programmed to memory, an "INCORRECT" signal is sent to whatever device you've connected it to.

The FAST RFID reader also has a wonderful reading distance of up to about 2.5 inches.  A couple of years ago, I ran a similar campaign with my first iteration of EASY RFID reading, but this unit is cleaner, less expensive, and has a more reliable reading distance.  It also has it's own 3.3v regulation on the reader board, so you do not need to provided a 3.3v power supply!  5v does it all!

 THE LAYOUT!

FTDI Connect:  This five pin header on the bottom side of the board provides the reset pin, 5v power pin, DC ground pin, and TX/RX pins of the ATMEGA328-PU chip, which allows for you to easily re-program with your Arduino UNO.  Alternately, you can simply remove the ATMEGA chip, and pop it directly into your UNO to re-program =D

The red and green indicator LEDs:  These LEDs are used as a visual indicator in both program mode, and scanning mode. The red LED will flash when a non-programmed card is read, and the green LED will flash when a correct card is read.  In program mode, when the fifth card is programmed, the green LED will turn on and stay on until power down.

The 3v regulator:  This set requires 5v as a power supply.  The MFRC522 requires a regulated 3.3v power supply, which is provided on the board, so that you don't have to worry about it!

MFRC522 connection header:  This is where the MFRC522 RFID reader connects to the main board.

Program select header:  Currently, only header#1 is being used in the program.  When header#1 is set to "B", you will power up in program mode.  When you power up with header#1 set to "A", you'll power up in scanning mode.  Use header#2 for your own programs!  Use it as you see fit!

Male USB connect & Output connector header:  These two connectors serve two purposes.  The first is to apply a 5v power supply and DC ground to power the board.  The two data lines (D+/D-) are the output lines that are used to send basic card data to your programmable medium.

You can add your own programs!

The FTDI header on the bottom of the board can be accessed with ease, which means that you can easily mess with the code as you see fit.  You can connect your Arduino to the FTDI lines for quick programming, or you can remove the on-board ATMEGA328-PU chip and insert it into your Arduino UNO directly as another method of quick programming.  However, you do not need to modify the code if you don't want to.  That is completely up to you! The program that is shown in the above Kickstarter video will come programmed into all FAST RFID module rewards!  This means that you can start having fun as soon as you receive your reward!

ACCESSORIES!

Some reward tiers come with some extra nuggets of fun, but this campaign is relatively minimalist.  The goal is to get these readers into the hands of as many people as possible as quickly as possible, so I wanted to keep the accessory list short!

13.56MHz RFID cards:  Many reward tiers come with 5x 13.56 RFID cards, which makes things easier to get down and dirty with the FAST RFID reader right out of the gate.  This set will not work with cards or tags that are not rated at 13.56MHz.  You won't damage anything if you try to use cards outside of that spectrum, but this unit will not read them.  Why not pledge towards a reward tier that includes a few of them?  =D

1.5m USB extension cable:  There are two ways to interface the FAST RFID reader to your programmable platform.  There is a four-pin header (5v/Ground/2x Data lines), and a male USB connector with the same four lines in parallel.

The Project Page!:

The project page will be updated as the campaign progresses.  The video manual, assembly video (For the DIY pleges), and commented Arduino code samples will be all be located here:  http://www.engineeringshock.com/fast-rfid-project-page.html  When I make updates to this page, I'll send out project updates to let you all know!

Production Schedule:

During the first two weeks of this campaign, I'll be readying orders for circuit boards, components, PCB assembly, and accessories.  Once these orders are been submitted, I'll send out a project update.  As long as the campaign goal has been funded, or if it looks like funding will be achieved, I will pay in advance for all of the hardware so that I'm ready to ship no later than two weeks after this campaign ends.

Week three and week four will be spent readying the video manual, commenting  Arduino code samples, and updating the project page.  When this campaign ends after four weeks, the project page should be completed in full, which means that the following two weeks (Post campaign) can be spent readying shipments.

All reward shipments will be shipped no later than six weeks after this campaign launches.  I always try to ship early, and I'm usually able to.

Thanks to Kickstarter & the Kickstarter community!

This is my 33rd Kickstarter campaign.   I have been so incredibly lucky to have had so many of them funded by so many great people.  I love designing electronic gadgets, and I care about shipping quality rewards out on time.   I pride myself on how I run my campaigns.  Without this community, so many of my ideas would remain ideas.  Thank you again for your support.  If I have been lucky enough to have received a pledge from you, please know that I'll work hard to keep you informed, and I'll strive to get your reward out on time!  Have a great day, everyone!  Thanks again!

Sincerely,

Patrick Mitchell

Risks and challenges

I have thirty successful campaigns under my belt, and of those campaigns, there was one that saw reward shipments delayed by three days. All other campaigns saw rewards ship on time or early. There's always a small risk for a delayed shipment, but I have solid relationships with my manufacturers and component suppliers. I always order parts with my own money ahead of time so that rewards can ship out quickly. The FAST RFID reader is production ready, which means that no more prototyping is necessary. If I've earned your pledge, please know that I'm going to be working hard to get you a quality reward shipped out promptly! Thank you for your consideration!
