Made in USA
A unique iPhone “case” that provides maximum usability and protection with a minimalist attitude.
Enjoy your phone: Covers less than 4% of your phone, but protect from the most common accidental drops.
Bummpies looks fantastic with a Sleek design: Subtle chamfers flow naturally into the phones' design lines.
Provides the perfect grip that won't slide out of your fingers, but doesn't get stuck in your pocket.
Semi-permanent: Bummpies stay on for years thanks to advanced 3M adhesive...but can be removed without a trace of residue.
We have spent over 16 months testing various concepts and prototypes. Design: We tried countless physical prototypes each time making style changes and attachment methods.
Various 3D printed prototypes Material Selection:
We opted to use polyurethane rubber. This material has been shown to stand up to years of abuse in clam-shell mobile phone, comes in a wide variety of colors and durometers, and can be molded to ultra high tolerances.
Engineering: We used high speed cameras to help us select the correct hardness of polyurethane. This is a balance between using a soft material for everyday grip, but a hard urethane to protect against accidental falls on concrete or tile floors.
Adhesive Selection: The adhesive was selected to meet 4 major design criteria:
- user-installable: simple peel and stick application
- permanence: Bummpies will stay on your phone for as long as you own it.
- location: the adhesive shape and thickness was optimized to make sure the Bummpies don't "slide" from the phone's corner to the side.
- clean removal: if you want to change your Bummpies color...it should be hassle free with no residue to clean.
- "everyday" cushioning: the shock of dropping or tossing the phone on a counter or desk is absorbed by the foam adhesive!
Dual Purpose Packaging: Bummpies provide a minimal .8mm clearance for the buttons and other surfaces. In order for this tight tolerance to maintained Bummpies must be precisely on the corners. To help ensure Bummpies are place accurately every time for every member of the Kickstarter community, the packaging is also a Placement Template!
Help us Finalize the Installation Process and Template by being a Beta Tester or an Early Adopter!
The template surrounds the iPhone, leaving exposed only the area where Bummpies are to be attached!
Designed in California...Made in USA... Funded by YOU?
Priorities: If we reach our goal...your Kickstarter contributions will fund:
- 3D printed parts for Beta Testers (In-house FDM printer or Shapeways.com)
- Production Injection molds: high quality molded parts will be created for Early Adopter Testers and Final Product Testers (Protomold.com located in Minnesota)
- Converting tooling for 3M VHB tape (Budnick.com located in Illinois)
- Packaging tooling: blister pack with cardboard insert (TBD)
- Packaging and installation instructions design (eLance.com)
- Product Molding and Kitting costs (In-house in San Diego)
Risks and challenges
Selecting the right suppliers: We have investigated a number of mold makers and pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) converting companies. We selected companies that can supply the quality we need at low quantities and a reasonable price.
Installing Bummpies is a little more tricky than a standard iPhone case. We want to make it easy and pre-assemble Bummpies with the adhesive. However, assembling the PSA with a molded Bummpie by hand may prove to be too expensive.
The packaging will be a high quality vacuum formed 'clam shell'. The plastic clam shell will surround the phone...only exposing where the place the Bummpies! This may not be possible without complex and expensive tooling. As a backup, we will use a simple printed insert card that will serve as the Bummpie installation guide.

We tested PORON Xrd, and this foam did not meet our requirements!
Bummpies are incredibly small! With .8 mm clearance we need a 80-90 Shore-A material in order to pretect the phone from Shoulder high drops. Poron Xrd is not available is this hardness range and does not meet our requirements.
The 80-90 Shore-A Bummpie is combine with a thin foam infused adhesive. This foam attaches the Bummpie to the phone and also provide shock/vibration dampening from everyday use...such as placing the phone on a desk.
No, the adhesive will not damage your iPhone!
The attachment system is a foam infused with acrylic-based pressure sensitive adhesive.
The color on an iPhone 5 is actually anodized aluminum; a surface oxidation impregnated with dye and then sealed. The only way to remove this coloring is to 'bleach' the dye with an infared laser, or remove the oxidation layer through mechanical abrasion or chemical etching (chromic acid/Phosphoric acid solution).
Sugru is a self-setting rubber for fixing, modifying, and improving 'stuff'
Sugru was actually used for some of the early concept testing, However, a few minor and major issues were uncovered:
1: Aesthetics...it looked like someone molded clay to my phone.
2: Sugru take 24 hours to cure.
1: A laser cut cardboard template improved the asthetics...but sugru is too soft to provide protection with a small profile.
2: After about 3-4 weeks the Sugru showed signs of wear and no longer provided complete protection.
3: After about 5 weeks some of the Sugru fell off!
Mean while, test phone with Bummpies...4 months and still going strong. Not to mention 3M rates their VHB adhesive for 10+ years!
