Selena, an undocumented student with an ambitious yet guarded personality, moves back home when her wildly irresponsible and spirited mother Maria sleeps with her employer’s boyfriend and becomes pregnant. In order to ensure her mother’s stability, Selena takes a leave of absence for what she believes will be a temporary stay.
Stylistically, a mix between SHAMELESS and JANE THE VIRGIN, DE COLORES takes complex issues and humanizes them with comedy and relatable characters. A coming of age story, the series will follow the colorful and at times explosive relationship between Selena and Maria while exploring what it means to be an undocumented immigrant. Taking a fresh spin on the workplace comedy, DE COLORES will also explore the vibrant setting of Pauly’s Fresh Produce in Boyle Heights and the characters that work under a clueless and exploitative boss.
Each episode will span 5 to 7 minutes in length. You, the audience will also be able to submit ideas for short “character clips” that will be featured at the beginning of each webisode.
DE COLORES earned the spot of semi-finalist in the CINECAUSE WOMEN’S FILMMAKING INITIATIVE, and most recently was a finalist for the INCUBATOR LAB, which is co-curated by LMU SFTV and FILM INDEPENDENT. We also have the support of BITCH MEDIA: Feminist Response to Pop Culture, as the online blog will be featuring the debut of our pilot on their site.
USING COMEDY TO HUMANIZE COMPLEX CHARACTERS AND STRUGGLES
Sometimes you have to cry and laugh (simultaneously). DE COLORES is our way of dealing with the challenges our identities pose. Instead of waiting for someone to create content that reflects our stories, we decided to make our own; the good, the bad, honest, and humorous portrayals.
As socially conscious women filmmakers of color, we find it particularly difficult to produce independent projects through traditional industry channels. The web series format gives us the freedom to shape our content, character and story for a diverse online community.
We are fundraising to produce the first season of DE COLORES. We will shoot 8 (5-7 minute) episodes over the course of 5 days. Filming will start in August.
We have shot a trailer which you can see above. Your support will go toward paying cast and crew, locations, and post-production. We’re so close to having DE COLORES on the screen and can make the series a reality with your support. Help us contribute to gender and cultural diversity on the digital screen!
By sharing the page and our social media sites, you’re supporting the voices of women of color and all those who feel misrepresented by mainstream media!

Cast: Our wonderful cast will receive a wage per day of the shoot.
Crew: Crew will also receive a wage per day. Our talented and creative DP, Chris Sheffield has worked on numerous independent films, shorts, commercials and videos and can deliver beautiful work on a modest budget. The rest of the crew consists of our producer, sound, Assistant Camera Operator and production assistants. We plan to keep the crew to a small number. This is truly a grass-roots effort and as creators, we're not afraid to wear multiple hats on this production. We're just as happy operating a boom as we are creating content!
Equipment: Our DP has all of the necessary tools for filming, but we will need some additional sound equipment.
Locations/Permits: While most of our locations will be donated or borrowed, we still need to secure the grocery store that will serve as Pauly’s Fresh Produce. We also need funds for location permits.
Catering: A nourished crew is a happy crew! While we plan to get most meals donated, we will need supplementary funds for additional catering and supplies.
Post-Production: We will be allocating funds for an editor. Music and sound editing/mixing will be done by our composer Akhil Gopal in a style similar to that of our trailer.
While we can complete season 1 on a budget of 12,000, our stretch goal is 15,000. This would allow us to allocate more funds toward securing our dream grocery store location as well as for having a larger budget for post-production and extending our soundtrack. We'll be able to record live salsa percussionists and musicians for the music that will be featured on season 1!
We will also be able to extend the DE COLORES tote bag and poster to more reward levels, and add more rewards, so please make suggestions in the comments section! We thank you in advance for your contribution - let's make this a successful campaign!!

Risks and challenges
Although there are many risks inherent in filmmaking, we feel confident that we will be able to take on the challenges that come with producing an independent project. Our biggest challenge will be to show our audience that social impact media can be entertaining and relatable. We believe that the comedic and honest characters will speak for themselves. As writers, this is our first major project, however, our team has the talent, experience, and most importantly passion to push this project forward. We are not only producing a web series, but feel that we are contributing to underrepresented narratives and in a small way, making the world a better place. We hope you support us in our journey and mission.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
