Rack & Ruin is designed to be a game where players can take a small number of miniatures, from whatever company, and use them. More than that, write up each miniature to perform in game as the player feels it should be.
We also want any hero miniature to be effective on the table top. Regardless of whether it is a Minotaur, Knight, Dancing Girl, Ghost, or the coolest wizard mini you've ever seen, you can design a character based on it and add it to your party.
But not every miniature in your party has to be a hero. Our creature trait system allow you to take a monster you have and put it in the game. Giants, trolls, dragons, treeman, triceratops, wolves, King Kong, horses, hydras and some 5" infernal bug-thing have all been written up and used on the table with our rules.
We've been playing Rack & Ruin locally for some time, but now we want to take it to the next level and we want you to be a part of it.
We are undertaking this crowd funding project in order to add the final touches we need to publish Rack & Ruin. First of all we will be hiring a professional editor and getting a professional layout done. Any fund left over will be used to help print some additional copies and get them into brick and mortar stores.
The Beta Test rules are now available here for those interested in trying out the game, though we still encourage you to sign-up for the beta test emails on our Facebook page.
Rack & Ruin is a game originally designed to combine role-playing and miniatures games into one customizable table top skirmish system. Each player selects miniatures they wish to use, beginning with four "hero" miniatures. Each hero is then built; much like one would create a pen and paper RPG character, with skills, traits, races, and items.
Traits are perhaps the most defining aspect of a character. They determine if a hero has followers, can wield magic, fills a specific role within a party, or has special abilities.
Followers can be characters of lesser ability than the heroes or monsters designed by the player to reflect his or her miniatures.
Once parties are created 2-4 players can join in a single game. Players select terrain, roll for scenario and the time of day the game is being played in. That combination will make almost every game completely unique.
In game, players will attempt to gather as many victory points as possible, the player with the most victory points at end of the game wins that game. Victory points also determine the amount of experience points each of the player's heroes will get for being fielded. Winning a game gives you bonus experience, as does playing against parties more powerful than your own.
Winning games, amassing treasure, and a few other factors give a party legacy. Legacy is the ultimate factor in determining who wins a campaign.
After a game, players check to see what treasures they have collected, if their party members took any permanent injuries and check to see if any of their heroes have gained enough experience to ascend to the next level learning more skills and traits. Then each party member may take a single out of game action. Out of game actions are often precious, so using them wisely is important.
In the core rules players can customize the rules for their miniatures using:
8 Character races, of which 6 may select from 5 specific traits for their race (Beastmen and Humans work a little differently)
The Rack & Ruin core rules also contain:
6 Scenarios and 6 Times of Day
54 Magic Spells
Rules for 25 terrain pieces
28 actions a miniature can take in game
22 Out of game actions

There are many different types of familiars that take any number of shapes. While familiars give the spell caster boons there are also drawbacks to using these always hungry magical beasts. Familiars will be a mini-expansion of approximately 10 pages that will introduce rules for using familiars and 20 familiars to share the stage with all of your party's spell casters.

Risks and challenges
This is our first ever publishing project. While the game is done, and with the final editor, the next step is something we have never done before. That being said, there has been a substantial amount of time studying the process and selecting how we are going to go about getting from beta pdf to properly published game.
We are confident that we can complete this process, within the time line stated, or sooner.
If our fist two stretch goals are met it may take additional time to have the fiction and artwork produced, however, if that is the case we will ensure that those who have pledged to receive copies of Rack & Ruin are notified and explanations given.
