About this project
Don’t you hate wandering across the inner-playa at night in hopes of finding a bathroom? Let the Bathroom Beacons light your way!
The Bathroom Beacons are three large-scale art installations that serve as bathroom signs-- and make it easier to find the portapotties on the inner-playa at night. Each installation is high in the air and brightly lit at night to guide you to the nearest restroom, while contributing to the unique artistic aesthetic of Burning Man– quirky, ironic, amusing, interactive, beautiful, and blinky! You can check out a video of the Beacons in action at Burning Man 2013 below.
Now with even more fun and blink in every beacon!
In 2014, we're bringing back the three beacons from last year, with some serious lighting and solar upgrades as we explain below. Our budget the 2014 beacons is over $15,000, which includes upgrades, solar infrastructure, transportation, and maintenance. While we are Burning Man honorarium grant recipients again this year, the grants do not cover all of our costs. This civic project will make a difference for each of the 70,000-plus (!) participants at this year's Burn. If just 1 in 10 participants at the burn supports our Kickstarter, we'll have the funding we need to complete the upgrades and bring the Beacons back to the playa! Thank you for checking out our Kickstarter. The bladder you save may be your own!
About the Installations
The Toilet Bowl. Everyone's favorite bowling alley is coming back, featuring a remodeled sign with backlit lettering and a bright red marquis arrow, along with redesigned full-color LED gutters, and sensors along the gutters and pins for an interactive surprise for bowlers!
Twisted Bristles. Imagine a 20-foot tall toilet bowl brush with over 1200 bristles made of 18" acrylic rods, backlit by LEDs dancing in a variety of blissful patterns. That's Twisted Bristles! Twisted Bristles is returning with some spiffy new lighting patterns and solar powered batteries-- our first solar beacon!
Welcome to Fabulous. Our flagship beacon is back with its neon star and beautiful marquis-- ready to guide you to your #1 and #2 destination on the playa.

About the Beacons Crew
The Beacons Crew is an NYC-based team, with support in San Francisco. The Bathroom Beacons first lit the way to the porta-potties on the inner playa in 2012 with "The Toilet Bowl," "Welcome to Fabulous," & "First Words," and have received three Burning Man honorarium art grants since then. We create civic art that draws people together in unconventional places, lighting the way to a smile, new friends, and relief. The Beacons have been found at parties, fundraisers, and FIGMENT NYC, bringing some playa magic home to New York.
The video editing and production was done courtesy of the lovely and talented Splinter.
Risks and challenges
The biggest risk to the project is, of course, the location-- the Black Rock Desert, the adversity of which is why all of us go to Burning Man. The site of the installations is three hours from the nearest city, so if any supplies or materials are needed, we have a long trip back and can lose up to a day in travel. Plus the unpredictable weather of the Black Rock Desert can cause delays in our installation plans and damage the Beacons themselves.
This is our third time bringing the Beacons to the playa. They've been tested at home and in the desert. The Beacons crew on-playa consists of 12 people, many of whom are long-time burners experienced with building the Beacons, as well as delivering other art projects at Burning Man. While much of what may come our way is unknown, we're experienced, up for the challenge, and dedicated to the success of the Beacons.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
