Dice Coins are a completely new take on dice. They work just as well as regular gaming dice but allow amazing artwork to be displayed on each one. They can also be used as stat counters and markers.

  • Designed to military challenge coin standards.
  • Made from solid brass.
  • Each coins weighs over 2 ounces.
  • Coins are 2 inches (50.8 mm) in diameter.
  • Epoxy coating protects the artwork.
  • Plastic protective sleeve comes with each coin.
  • Just as accurate as regular gaming dice.
  • Dice Coins come in d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20.

The common side of the coin has a knob molded into the metal. Players use one or two hands to spin the coin like a top.  Once the coin is spinning at full speed (which just takes a second), the player puts their finger at the bottom of the coin and stops it.

The result is the number displayed in the first visible sector to the left of the player's finger.  A sector is considered visible if you can completely see both of the sector lines surrounding the number. It is that simple. The project video shows them in action. Patent pending.

Dice have been around forever and they work really well. However, Dice Coins do have advantages over traditional dice.

Appearance, Weight, and Uniqueness

The appearance of regular dice are generally limited to color, material, and size choices.  A limited amount of artwork can be put on them but this often makes it difficult to see the numbers or symbols. Dice Coins have a large area that allows elaborate artwork to be displayed. Players can choose coins that have artwork that fits the theme of their game or their personal style. When you pick them up, they have substantial weight since they are made of solid brass.

Dice Coins just look and feel cool. They are unique and each design is truly a work of art.

Accuracy

Dice are rolled and land on a number. Imperfections in the design, manufacturing, or composition of dice can result in statistical inaccuracies. Multi face dice are harder to manufacture so they are more prone to this.

This is NOT a factor with Dice Coins. A player manually stops the coin from spinning. Any manufacturing imperfections that would manifest themselves if the coins were allowed to stop spinning and come to rest on their own, do not happen since the player stops the coin before this occurs.

In addition, players can't manipulate the coins like some players do with dice. When a Dice Coin is spinning at full speed (which just takes a second), the numbers are totally blurred and you can't anticipate the results of the spin.

Stat Counters, Markers, or a Nice Paperweight

Dice Coins can be used as stat counters by using the bottom number on the coin. You just rotate the coin until the desired number is at the bottom. We staggered the placement of sequential numbers to eliminate any confusion on what number was being displayed in case a coin is moved slightly.

Dice Coins can also be used as game markers. You can even use them as a nice paperweight that is sure to be an attention grabber.

Spinning Surface and Amount of Space Needed

Dice Coins spin on everything you would roll a dice on. Tables, play mats, notebooks, etc. Just like dice, you would not use them on carpet. And again--just like dice--they make more noise if spun on a hard surface like glass. A table cloth, piece of paper, etc. eliminates the noise and they spin just fine. They excel on gaming play mats.

Dice can bounce into another player's area or off the table. A VERY bad spin with a Dice Coin can do the same. However, Dice Coins are easier to control than dice, require a little less space to use, and they stay in the same area where they are spun.

Disadvantages

Dice Coins are more expensive than plastic poly dice. However, Dice Coins are actually cheaper than most specialty dice made of metal. Dice Coins are easier to make.

You generally only want to spin one Dice Coin at a time. You can roll several regular dice at once. This is an advantage that regular dice have over Dice Coins. However, you can rapidly spin a Dice Coin several times in a row and add the results. See the project video.

Dice Coins are not aerodynamic tops. On harder surfaces they can wobble some as they spin. However, this does not affect their accuracy one single bit. In addition, the epoxy coating is like a clear coat on a car. It looks striking and beautiful when you look at it normally.  But if you hold the coin at certain angles in bright light and look very close, you may see some striation marks or small imperfections in the epoxy. This is just the nature of an epoxy coating.

A set of six Dice Coins consisting of d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, and d20. Each type of dice will have different artwork so you will have six unique dice.

The major expense on this project is commissioning high quality artwork. The artwork you see on the samples was commissioned by us for another kickstarter project. We intend to use the same artists or ones of the same caliber, but we don't want to "reuse" the artwork from one project to another. We want new art for this project.

The artwork on the dice will be based on a fantasy theme. We will release artwork through out the project's development.

Future sets will focus on other genres such as science fiction, horror, military, etc.

Possible stretch goal...depending upon how the project progresses we may add a stretch goal where we add an optional set of dice with ARTWORK based upon a different genre. The genre will be based upon a consensus of our backers. If that occurs, once the surveys are sent out at the end of the project you could choose which set you want. If you order multiple sets, you could pick one of each.

NEW OPTION--August 25.  Some backers have requested coins without any artwork so they can add their own artwork. We can definitely do this. With this option, the picture insert will be gone and there will be a flat recessed area where the picture was. After the project is funded, we will send out a survey and you can request this option.

Yes. We own a small company that has been designing military challenge coins since 2010. We have designed over 200 coins and have NEVER been late on a delivery. We have been using the same factory since 2010 and are very familiar with shipping and fulfillment.

In addition, we ran a successful kickstarter project at the beginning of the year that was very similar to this project. The project was delivered on time as promised. That project, Ultra Coins, combines elements of collectible card games, miniatures, and board games. It uses the same spinning coin concept as Dice Coins but uses game pieces that have all the stats and abilities integrated into the coin. No other game components are needed. Think Hero Clix. We are still heavily invested in that project, are working on rule improvements, and the next set of characters to release.

Dice Coins is actually an easier project to deliver since it is a game accessory and not a brand new game.

Risks and challenges

We see very little risk in this project. We have experience in designing coins, shipping, and fulfillment. We have a back up factory that we can use if necessary and the choice of several artists that we work with. Of course, anything can happen, but that is very unlikely. Our commitment is to deliver a quality project on time.
