About

UPDATE: The story of Stormy Weather doesn't end with this Kickstarter project. See what happens next at our blog - http://creativeroomgames.wordpress.com/

Stormy Weather tells the story of two mad scientists who have had enough of holding the world to ransom. They just want quiet relaxation - a spot of light gardening in one of the prettiest villages in Transylvania. All was going well, until they both learnt that the Transylvania in Bloom trophy was only a few weeks off, and now both are determined to prove themselves the greatest gardener in the village.

There's only one way to settle this - SCIENCE!!!

Stormy Weather puts you in the wellington boots of those two scientists. You start with two weather machines, capable of changing and moving weather so that your flowers get what they need to grow. As the game goes on, the machines get more powerful - they affect bigger areas and they produce more extreme effects. You can start to throw extreme weather like heatwave and lightning at your opponent, so that their gardens wilt and suffer. You can release psychopathic birds to dive-bomb your enemy's flowerbeds. Before you know it, you'll be hacking death rays and firing lightning across the board for, as any mad scientist will tell you, VICTORY MUST BE MINE!!!

You can learn more about Stormy Weather at our website - www.stormyweathergame.com - including instructions on how to get a print-and-play trial version of the game.

Stormy Weather is a game for two players, set on a board representing your two gardens and the valley between. Each turn, you use your weather machines either to create weather or to move existing weather around. At the end of the turn, the parts of your garden with good weather will see their flowers grow. The parts under extreme weather will be damaged.

Because the board is tightly constrained, you won't get all the weather you want without having to fight for it. Your opponent won't be able to make their garden grow without leaving themselves open to punishment.

We've done a short video, outlining the gameplay and showing you a sample play of a game:

http://youtu.be/t8GrPcSfR0k

You can find another illustrated explanation of the mechanic on our website

Stormy Weather is all about its weather machines - forty in total, ranging from the dinky little remote control cloud to the gargantuan planetary realigner.

  • The cloud harpoon can be used to reel in rain or cloud, helping your garden grow or protecting you against heatwaves.
  • Killer earthworms undermine your opponent's flowerbeds, eating their growing plants from the roots upward.
  • The solar wind tunnel captures all the heat of the sun and dispenses it onto one column of the board.

Sam Zuppardi, the artistic half of Creative Room Games, is a renowned children's book illustrator. His first solo book, The Nowhere Box, was published last year by Candlewick Press and Walker Books, and his last illustration project, The Telltale Start by Gordon McAlpine, was an Amazon book of the month. In Stormy Weather, Sam has earthed decades of fevered scratching to create THE GREATEST WEATHER CONTROL ARSENAL KNOWN TO MAN!!!

The game is designed so that it can be played by casual mad scientists or committed evil geniuses. Either way, to keep the game exciting to the end, the last move either player makes is a special mad scientist taunt.

At the start of the game, you are dealt one taunt. After both players have used their final weather machines, they both reveal their taunts:

As game designers, we strongly encourage players to shout their taunts at the top of their voices. With hand gestures.

We have a set of taunts of our own ("You have misunderestimated me for the LAST time!!!"), but alongside our Kickstarter campaign we will be running a separate competition to find the best taunts that the internet can throw at us. The two best examples will be included in the game, and there will be copies of the game for the lucky creators. Visit our website to learn more.

Overall: 4 of 5. I really enjoyed my plays of Stormy Weather. It’s interesting, replayable, and the theme is just fun. You get to say things like, “My Precipitation Extractor steals your raincloud!” There are too few games where statements like this are available. - Geekinsight, Giant Fire Breathing Robot

I’m delighted to report that Stormy Weather is all sunshine and flowers. Er, and evil worms and lightning and planetary realigners... Growing pretty flowers by pulling rain clouds toward you and sending heatwaves at your opponent is pretty awesome, particularly when you get to laugh maniacally while you’re doing it. - Jonathan Liu, Geekdad

Every mad scientist wants more bits to play with. From £12,500 to £30,000, we are going to introduce bigger cards and specially-made tokens unique to Stormy Weather. We're particularly excited about the potential to add custom-cut flowers that we'll be having made specially. We'll also add more mad scientists and give you extra taunts to throw at your opponent. If we get all of this done, our £40,000 stretch goal is an extra expansion that will be included in every game absolutely free.

Everyone wants to be a mad scientist. In Stormy Weather, six backers can have their crazed dreams come true and become one of the six mad scientists in the game

If you pick 'They called me mad! Mad!!!' tier, as soon as we've funded Sam Zuppardi will use a picture of you at your most scientific and work with you turn it into a truly crazed genius. You'll get a chance to comment and change as the work goes forward.

At the end of the process you will get an A4-sized print of your alter-ego, together with a high-res digital copy of the image. But even better, we will use that picture for one of the six mad scientist cards. So soon, THE WHOLE WORLD WILL KNOW OF YOUR GENIUS!

You can find out more about this reward tier in the Q&A.

As a UK-based partnership who have backed plenty of global kickstarters in our time, we're committed to two things:

  • Shipping included in the price
  • Customs paid up front wherever viable

The first of these is possible for the whole world (with the exception of Brazil - for which, see the Q&A for an explanation) - so all our prices include the full cost of shipping. The second depends on volume. As a minimum, all EU and US orders will be shipped from within their respective customs areas, so backers won't have to pay extra. If we get 50 Canadian backers, we will sort customs-free shipping for Canada as well.

Risks and challenges

There are two principal risks in kickstarter board game projects - production and shipping. Fortunately, there are some dedicated people out there who have shared their experiences of kickstarting board games over the past 5 years - what we are doing here is done in the shadow of their pioneering efforts. On both points, we are following what now count as well-established models.

On production, Stormy Weather is nearly ready to go. With the exception of stretch goals and mad scientist artwork, the game is pretty much finished. Sam is an experienced illustrator who is used to working to (ridiculous) deadlines, and Michael is an experienced manager who among other things has published some major government documents to (ridiculous) deadlines. we each have experience of key bits of the production chain. Both of us will be working hard to finalise the design as quickly as possible, and setting the production line running as soon as the Kickstarter closes.

On shipping - we will be using personally recommended shipping companies for the international leg of the journey. All EU and US orders will be fulfilled by Amazon, which (say what you like about them) know how to get a box to your doorstep.

We aim to deliver all copies of the game by November. This is a fairly pessimistic projection of the delivery timescale, and we could well deliver early if everything goes to plan. Either way, we are fully committed to keeping you up to date with everything that happens.
