About this project
The Lark Quartet is committed to championing new and rarely performed works. This cd Composing America illustrates our efforts, as it includes a piece by a quintessential American composer (Copland), two works commissioned for the quartet (Bolcom and Moravec), and one brand new arrangement (Adams).
We have put a great deal of time and energy into this project, and our goal through this Kickstarter campaign is to offset engineering and production costs. Our album is on track to be released by Bridge Records in January 2014.
What's on the CD:
Aaron Copland's Two pieces for string quartet dates from early in his career (1923-28), and is a vibrant yet lush tribute to Gabriel Fauré. The captivating energy and soloistic string writing is an opportunity to feature the quartet, as all other tracks are collaborations with guest artists.
Paul Moravec wrote his Piano Quintet for Jeremy Denk and the Lark Quartet. This piece is very special to us, as we have so enjoyed working with Jeremy over the years, and have been fortunate to perform several of Paul's incredible works.
William Bolcom's Billie in the Darbies is for baritone and string quartet, with a text drawn from Herman Melville's masterpiece Billie Budd. We are joined by baritone Stephen Salters in this stirring work. There are few string quartets with baritone in the repertoire, so we are thrilled to have commissioned, performed and now recorded this very important addition to the canon.
Our version of John's Book of Alleged Dances by John Adams is an arrangement created just for us by percussionist Yousif Sheronick, who joins us on the piece. Originally for prepared piano and string quartet, Yousif did an extraordinary job of capturing the essence of John's composition while giving it new life through fresh instrumentation.
We would be extremely grateful for any contributions you are able to make to Composing America. We want to ensure that this project comes to fruition, and your donation can ensure that it does. Thank you so much for your support!
Risks and challenges
The Lark Quartet has been very conscientious throughout this project in regard to process and financial obligations. With the assistance of our kickstarter supporters, we will be able to proceed with the engineering and have our cd pressed/delivered.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
