We want to breathe new life into a former bakery to create a home for Storied Coffee, a modern specialty coffee shop for the Schenectady area. Storied celebrates craft in food and beverage and is excited to offer some of the area's highest quality specialty products through partnerships with Kru Coffee, Yesfolk Tonics, Short and Stout Tea Co., Cider Belly Doughnuts, and more.
We envision a comfortable, uniquely inviting atmosphere in which people can learn about coffee and other specialty items without ever feeling like they don't belong. We want guests to always know they are valued and to feel like Storied Coffee is their home!
WHY A (SPECIALTY) COFFEE SHOP?
Rich (co-owner) grew up in the Schenectady area, specifically the Village of Scotia. He remained in the Capital Region and found himself, along with Christine, his wife and co-owner, gravitating toward certain kinds of coffee shops. The more they learned about coffee, the more they realized it was a certain approach to coffee and a certain shop environment that drew the crowds to these places day after day.
Most Capital Region coffee shops, cafes, and restaurants use one of two large area coffee roasting companies, including all of Schenectady's popular coffee shops. Only a handful of companies (four?? six?!) in the entire Capital Region use coffee from more "specialty" or "third-wave" (modern) coffee roasters, and none are in the Schenectady area.
The specialty shops we've found in Albany, Troy, and Saratoga have encouraged a love affair with coffee that we can't ignore, and have drawn us deep into specialty coffee as both an industry and a movement.
Our appreciation for craft now extends to other specialty product companies and we're excited to feature some of the area's best-loved businesses in our shop. We want to help elevate the standard for artisan beverages, food, and goods in the Capital Region and beyond. Schenectady is where we hope to start.
Specialty is at the heart of what we do. To us, this means quality above artificial flavors and frills. We'll offer premium espresso beverages made-to-order, hot and cold coffees, teas, kombucha, and bubble teas including traditional powdered versions as well as our own "natural" boba milk tea made without powders. Plus baked goods and other popular coffee shop fare!
We've personally invested all we can into the business - around $20,000. It will take an additional $20,000-$30,000 to bring our vision to life! The money we raise through our Kickstarter will go directly toward renovating a former bakery in the Village of Scotia, five minutes from the heart of downtown Schenectady, NY.
The work we have to do includes building an ADA-compliant bathroom, updating plumbing, tearing out partition walls, framing new walls in other places, updating electrical and lighting, and of course building, wiring and plumbing the coffee bar. We're working with people who are invested in us and willing to give us great prices, but we still can't do it alone.
We have secured our building, put money down on specialty coffee equipment and other appliances, and invested in getting our business operational via pop-ups. Your support will get us within reach of opening a storefront hopefully in the next two-three months!
To us, Kickstarter is a fun way to invite our community to truly be part of the process and to offer something, however simple, as a way of saying thank you for sharing this experience with us.
When small businesses collaborate, everyone wins. These area businesses inspire us beyond words and we're honored to have them on board in creating this specialty experience in the Schenectady area.
We're partnering with Kru Coffee, a Saratoga-based roasting company and cafe. Kru might be most in tune with the specialty coffee industry of anyone we've met in the area. We're inspired by their attention to detail in coffee roasting and brewing and we're stoked to be trained by them and feature their coffees in our shop.
Short and Stout Tea Co. strives for excellence in both tea craft and customer service. With a flagship store in Guilderland, NY and their new Limited location in Crossgates Mall, they're family-owned/operated and feature over 130 loose-leaf teas for sale along with signature CRAFTeas, bubble teas, and much more.
Yesfolk Tonics is a Troy-based craft-fermented beverage company specializing in single-origin kombucha. They are making a name for themselves in the Capital Region and beyond and we've dreamed of having their kombucha on tap since day one.
Inspired by our partnership with Short & Stout, we wanted to offer delicious bubble tea to the local Schenectady area. We'll offer traditional milk tea flavors made with powders as in most boba shops, but along with this "Traditional Milk Tea", we'll offer our own "Natural Milk Tea" which will simply feature varieties of brewed tea along with milk, sugar, and tapioca pearls or other boba.
The Curated Corner
We've planned for a dedicated retail area and we'd love to invite other NYS businesses to feature their one-of-a-kind products on two sets of shelves in our shop on a monthly-rotational basis. They'd be invited to place products, host a reception, offer discounts to their customers who also shop with us, and other creative perks. We celebrate local artisanship and see this as a way to connect our shop to a bigger movement.
Big thanks to our bro Rob for shooting footage with us literally all day!

Risks and challenges
Risks include the potential for additional unseen costs to arise in our build-out. We feel we have a pretty good handle on what to expect as we've met with various contractors and inspectors in the planning process but anything is possible. We are working to secure other grants and/or micro-loans that may be available to help offset the costs of updating our building.
We have yet to undergo various permit processes and these make a project subject to delays. We have, however, met with various representatives of respective departments in the planning process and are continuing to prepare material to submit at the appropriate time. They include building and plumbing permits and health department permits.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
