About this project
WHATS MY GOAL?
My goal is to produce a limited edition book of only 750 copies of this unique and beautiful project, Toy Soldiers!
This project is a unique approach to a subject as old as humanity, that of war. Toy Soldiers offers a completely fresh approach to a dialogue on war told here through the conflict in Africa's last colony, Western Sahara. Via the illusion, enactment and the beautifying of a reality re-staged and through a unique collaboration between an artist and a refugee military commander, this project forms a work of art with a radical new perspective on conflict and war. The soldiers you see here are not toy soldiers they are real soldiers, in a real conflict zone, posed as toy soldiers as a metaphor for the viewing of modern conflict as war games.
After 2 years of intricate and complex planning prior to the shooting of the project I believe passionately that Toy Soldiers opens a new dialogue for our society's desensitisation to war through the media and social networks relentless streaming of documentary images. My goal is to attempt to slow the whole process down and visually arrest a viewer via the blurring of boundaries between what is real and what is not, between documentary and art; to inspire engagement through a fresh approach to the depictions of conflict that we (the audience) have become so numb too.
I can’t achieve this publication without your help! Publishing has changed and now artists are expected to contribute a significant amount of the publishing costs of a book. I have an amazing publisher in Dewi Lewis Publishing and a great designer, Nicola Bailey, helping to make this beautiful limited edition book. The design is almost ready, the printers quotes are in and it just need scheduling, the hard work is 90% done, all I need to do now is raise the funds to pay for the printing.
I’m very proud of this work. It is a unique project that will be a beautiful first book and culmination of 5 years dedicated to this project. The experience and production of Toy Soldiers has had a profound effect on both my life and my art. Join with me, get some great rewards for your pledge and be a part of an engagement and a voice on important issues through the arts. With your amazing help, generosity and support, you will not only have a beautiful book but you will also be a part of a dialogue that, in some way, might just help to make a difference through the arts in bringing about a raised awareness to the invisible conflict in Western Sahara.
It's All or Nothing! If I don't reach my goal amount I don't get any funding. No matter how big or how small every contribution matters a great deal. Thank you !!

THE BOX SET:
Risks and challenges
A successfully funded project means we can put the finishing touches to the design and pay for the printing, I have secured some of the funding for the printing costs and so this campaign is for the outstanding costs of printing and nothing more, there is no mark up or profit from this campaign! The project is shot and the hires images are all ready for press and the design is 90% complete, that part has taken 5 years so far, so the hard work is all behind me.
It's now all about the finishing touches paying for the print run. Thats it!
I know it's tough times for everyone and every pledge no matter how large or small is an amazing gift of support and trust in me as an artist and for that I am truly humbled!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
