About this project

The LuLu Sessions is a feature documentary of two best friends taking on life’s ultimate adventure - death. It is a small personal film with big ambitions.
Why am I making this project?
I’ve been called brave twice in my life – without ever saving small children from burning buildings, nor battling monstrous illnesses, nor stepping foot on a battlefield. I simply left a comfortable, cushy law job and followed my dream. The second time people tell me that I’m brave is after seeing previews of this film. And all I did was simply following my heart.
Ten years ago, this story chose me. LuLu was my best friend.
LuLu is like no one you’ve ever met. A hard-living, chain-smoking rebel with a tender heart. A poet with a potty mouth. Farm girl. Former cheerleader. World-class cancer researcher. Beloved professor. Dr. Louise Nutter, or LuLu has just discovered a new anti-cancer drug when she finds out she is dying of breast cancer herself at 42. Shot during those last 15 months of LuLu’s life, The LuLu Sessions is a raw, intimate, yet surprisingly humorous story about me showing up for my best friend, and together, testing the limits of our bond while taking on life’s ultimate adventure.
The LuLu Sessions explores the transformations that death can hasten. Shooting in the style of cinema verite, I was at once the filmmaker and a character. I realized I had only one shot at getting it right. We tried to live life “normally,” but of course, hardly any of it was normal. The camera became the watchful third pair of eyes, building a quiet testimony of the content of our character and our frailties – raw, intimate, and immediate. It exposes us in ways that are uncomfortable and punishing.
In a culture where death equals failure and is talked about in hushed voices, dying remains deeply private and involuntary – often lonely and frightening. I hope The LuLu Sessions helps change these perceptions and sparks loud, passionate dialogues. In the spirit of Thelma and Louise meets Tuesdays with Morrie, let this film be a celebration of the things worth fighting for in life – love, friendship, forgiveness, and peace.
Why do I need your help?
Ten years in the making, the film is now weeks from being a reality. I am over the moon that this film will be having its LA premiere at the end of April, then onto Boston, and Toronto... With everything on the line - I need your help.
In the next several weeks, we will be finishing all the technical deliverables, online editing, color correction, final motions graphics, and in the process, incurring large bills. Your support will go directly into the completion of this film.
The film is a true celebration of life, and your support at this juncture is akin to being a participant to its birth. We have carefully selected rewards that reflect the spirit of this film, to give you added incentive to donate. Anything donation beyond our goal of $12,000 will help us get this film out into the world - outreach, travel expenses, promotion, etc. So I’d love to see it wildly exceed our expectations. But please remember, if we do not meet our goal, we get nothing!
Further, if you prefer to make tax-deductible donations over $2500, please contact me directly at firstname.lastname@example.org. There are other instructions on our website www.thelulusessionsfilm.com as well. Please come for a visit and check on our screening dates in your city. Help us start a national conversation! Come to a premiere! Thank You!
