We are Adrian McWalter and Quinton Dalton and we formed Stand to Games in 2016. The company specialises in War game rules, table top games and miniature figures based in Nottinghamshire, UK.

http://www.standtogames.co.uk/

In recent years we  have both  had success with published rules sets, the Warlord Games Black Powder supplements Albion Triumphant volume 1 & 2 being good examples of our work.  Following the launch of our successful rule set “Over the Hills: Aa Napoleonic War game”, we also launched our “Over the Hills Fatigue Board” project on Kickstarter in Spring 2017; , this also proved successful and we delivered to backers within 6 weeks.

We now offer our new rule set Forager, which supported by a new range of high quality 28 mm high quality metal figures. The rules allow you to play a fast, fun Napoleonic Skirmish game. We have designed and produced a 'Command' of six British and six French skirmishers with their very own character cards for playing with the rules. For the Kickstarter, we have also produced an Kickstarter exclusive miniature of a Spanish Guerrilla leader, and other Spanish Guerrillas will be available through Stretch Goals.

Spanish Character Card
Spanish Character Card

We hope through this Kickstarter we plan to bring you five more Spanish Guerrilla figures and character cards as Stretch Goals:

Stretch Goal 1 Spanish Guerrilla  Second in Command £4900

Stretch Goal 2 Spanish Guerilla Fighter £5300

Stretch Goal 3 Spanish Guerilla Fighter £5700

Stretch Goal 4 Spanish Guerilla Fighter £6100

Stretch Goal 5 Spanish Guerilla Fighter £6500

The free and exclusive Spanish Guerilla leader is used in several of the scenarios in the Forager rule book. Stand to Games will be at several war game shows in the UK where we invite people to come and play through some of the scenarios available. Our Forager figures have been reviewed by Wargames Illustrated who said they are “…well sculpted and full of character”. Stand to Games also appeared on Episode 224 of the Meeples & Miniatures pod cast, where Forager was discussed at length and really piqued the interest of the show’s hosts.

So why is Forager different:

Forager is a fast, fun, skirmish -level war game where deeds straight out of a Sharpe novel can come to life. Think of famous episodes portrayed on TV and in the written word; all those feats can be performed whilst playing a game of Forager: hiding, climbing, jumping, diving for cover, to name a few.

The appendices contain lists and details of the 75 character traits as well as a quick play sheet and several scenarios for you to get to grips with, along with a campaign where you can enjoy watching your characters grown in experience. Finally, to get you started, there are two sets of character cards: one French command and one British command.

Character Card British NCO
Character Card British NCO

These commands allow you to that you can get straight into the game with. The basics of the game are as follows:

1. Each force is called a command and is led by an officer/NCO and has several other soldiers, all being named characters.

2. Each character has a Skill level and Combat Statistic, Field Craft and Fatigue Score.

3. Characters can also be given Character Traits that shape how they fight during a game of Forager.

4. Characters can also be given Equipment that aids them during a game of Forager A Command Each command is led by an officer or NCO character, the command can then have a number of other characters, the basic game is designed to allow commands of between three and twelve characters.

All characters are unique individuals who each bring different skills to a game of Forager. Each character has a character card that identifies their nationality, name and unit as well as their arms and game statistics broken down to Skill, Combat, Field Craft, Fatigue, Character Traits and Equipment.

Skill

A character’s Skill level is a numerical way of determining how good the character is in terms of their overall battlefield skill. It is defined by a number between 1 and 9. The higher the number the greater the character’s Battlefield Skill. The number is used to determine which characters move, shoot, and fight first in the game.

Combat

The character’s combat ability is expressed as several d10. In simple terms this is the number of d10 that a character rolls when they are either shooting at other enemy player characters, any non- player characters, or fighting in hand to hand combat. The greater number of dice that a character rolls signifies how much extra time a good soldier has, to choose their shot, or how much time a good soldier has, to create an opportunity to strike.

Field Craft

The character’s Field Craft ability is expressed as several d10. This is a mix of a character’s experience of life and of battle. A character’s Field Craft is used to defend against shooting and close combat attacks. A character also uses their Field Craft in the Recovery phase.

Character Statistics
Character Statistics

Fatigue

This is the amount of damage a character can take before they are defeated and play no further part in the game. Fatigue is shown on the characters’ card by several circles.

Traits

A character can be enhanced further by adding character traits to the basic character statistics. There are three types of Character Traits and these are Personal Traits, Battle Traits and Command Traits. Characters are limited to the number of traits that they can have.

Personal Traits reflect a character’s life experiences and how those experiences have shaped the character. Here are a few examples: Aggressive: Red mist. This character gains +1 d10 to their Combat in the combat phase, but loses -1 d10 Field Craft to a minimum of 1 in the combat phase. Barrack Room Lawyer: I know my rights. This character has -1 Skill but they can re- roll unsuccessful recovery phase rolls. Cook: Great Stir about! This character as the skill to make anything taste good, thus, his mates don’t want to see him dead. Whilst this character is alive your leader has +1 Skill, but if the cook dies your leader suffers -2 Skill.

Forager: Where did that come from
Forager: Where did that come from

Battle Traits represent martial skill honed on the battlefield, or some lucky so and so, who is a gifted natural. Here are a few examples: Bayonet Fighter: A natural bayonet fighter. When fighting, close combat using a missile weapon with fixed bayonet this character gains +1 Combat d10. Brothers in Arms: We have been through a lot together. During the shooting phase one character within 6 inches of this character gains this characters Skill value.

Command Traits

Can only be given to a commander and they are either learnt skills or inherent qualities. Here are a few examples: Regulations: A stickler for the rules. This character has -1 Skill in the movement phase. Every other character in the command has + 1 Skill. Purchased Commission: Daddy bought me this. This character has +1 Skill but the rest of his command have -1 Skill in the movement phase.

Weapons, Traits and Equipment
Weapons, Traits and Equipment

Weapons

Characters can be armed with a variety of weapons from a rifled musket to a blunderbuss, a knife to a heavy cavalry sabre. Weapons give bonuses to a characters Combat statistic or place negatives on a struck character's Field Craft statistic.

Equipment

A character can carry equipment besides their firearms and hand to hand weapons. Equipment aids a character during the game. Here are a few examples: Tobacco and Pipe: Used to provide solace to a soldier. A character with these items can re-roll one die when taking a Field Craft roll once per game. Loot Camp kettle: Used by an unarmed character as an Improvised weapon. Alternatively, it could save a character’s life. A character can ignore the first hit they suffer in the game if they roll a 6 or more on a d10. Loot Pots and Pans: Used by an unarmed character as an Improvised weapon. Alternatively, it could save a character’s life. A character can ignore the first hit they suffer in the game if they roll a five or more on a d10. This character is very noisy though and cannot move when hiding. Loot

Here are a few more principles of the game:

The Turn Sequence During a game of Forager players will play through several turns until one player achieves the victory laurels and wins the game. A turn is broken down into four phases.

1. Movement Phase

At the start of the movement phase players roll a d10 to see who gains the overall initiative for the turn, the highest roll wins the overall initiative for the turn. In the movement phase players move each of their characters; Characters move in Skill order starting with the lowest Skill character moving first and then working through each character to the highest. The player with the overall initiative can force characters from the opposing side to move first if they have the same Skill statistic as their characters.

2. Shooting Phase

In the shooting phase characters can shoot at enemy characters and NPC. Players shoot with each of their characters in Skill order starting with the character with the highest Skill and working through to the character with the lowest Skill. A character that shoots at an enemy character can score a number of fatigue hits, the first hit that a character scores generates a D100 result on the Butchers Bill Table. Here are a few examples:-

05 to 20 Damn you Sir! A lucky hit, the wounded character suffers Three Fatigue Hits

48 to 51 Leg It! A near miss is all too much for this character, they turn and run: The character suffers no Fatigue Hits but the character must retreat at Sprint speed towards their base edge. If in Combat suffer 2 Fatigue Hits as they turn and run. The recovered character suffers no further ill effects

75 to 80 Blast, I Loved That! The character kit saves them; the character suffers one Fatigue Hit unless they discard a piece of equipment that they are carrying.

89 to 92 Get your Head Down A near miss stops this character dead in their tracks: The character suffers no Fatigue Hits but cannot move, although they can shoot. If the character is in combat they suffer one Fatigue Hit, they can still strike blows. The recovered character suffers no further ill effects.

Any further hits cause extra Fatigue Hits on the unfortunate victim.

Some of the Butchers Bill results  generate in game Battle Events such a BROKEN FLINT The Player who triggered the event  can play this  on any character that shot this turn. The character’s flint is broken and must be replaced in the recovery phase or the weapon cannot fire. To replace the Broken flint correctly a character needs to roll a 4 or more in the Recovery Phase. FOULED BARREL The Player with the Overall Initiative can play this  on any character that fired their weapon this turn. The character's weapon is not in good shape and requires cleaning in the Recovery Phase. To clean the weapon correctly the character needs to roll a 5 or more in the recovery phase. INSECTS Play on the next character to activate, this character disturbs a swarm of insects and instead of moving they are moved 6 inches in a random direction to escape the swarm. KISMET The player who triggered this event may reroll any one set of dice rolls. E.g. in the shooting phase one of their characters rolls three dice causing one hit and two misses. The player  decides to reroll the set of dice which includes both the hit and the two misses.

3.Combat

In the Combat phase characters can fight enemy characters and NPC that they are in base to base contact with. Players fight with each of their characters in Skill order starting with the character with the highest Skill and working through to the character with the lowest skill.

Portuguese Caçadores

As the project has gone so well,  we now offer you a further faction 'Command' of six metal 28mm figures plus separate character cards for them. This faction will be the famous Portuguese Caçadores, the elite soldiers of the Portuguese army of the Peninsular war.  Each of the six figures in the command will be modelled with a campaign feel to them and set in 'action poses' to compliment the fantastic quality shown in our British and French 'Commands'

The 'Command' consists of one officer a sergeant and four soldiers

Portuguese Character

The Portuguese characters have had a few different Traits added to them, as can be seen with their commander who has some rudimentary skill as a doctor. The Trait will allow him the chance to 'patch up' the lads in his command.

The other great factor about this set of figures is the fact that the majority of them are armed with the famous Baker Rifle, which will bring something different to your games of Forager. Here are the rest of the Character Cards

Butcher's Bill Effect Markers as Add Ons

Butcher's Bill Marker
Butcher's Bill Marker

In a game of Forager a character can suffer certain injuries when  dice rolls are made against the Butchers Bill table. Not mi Tatters being a favourite of ours.

We have a set of markers that we use in our games of Forager, they are hard plastic and very durable. They can be used to put by the figure in question or the character card as a reminder to you of the injury a character has suffered.  We now offer the marker set to you. The set comes with 24 counters with two of each Butchers Bill effects contained in the set. We are having the sets done in white plastic with red writing as it looks great and really makes the effect pop.

Risks and challenges

We do not believe we will see any risks having already done a successful Kickstarter.

In addition we have already got the rule book at the publishers, the figures French British and Spanish exclusive miniature, are sculpted and cast.

We have moulds ready to cast the required number of figures dependent on backers and the character cards are also ready, again waiting on backer numbers.

Due to our excellent forward planning wave one will ship in December 2017 with the stretch goal figures if achieved early in 2018.
