Legendary New England brewer, Tod Mott and his wife, Galen, are this close to realizing their dream of opening a brewery, Tributary Brewing Company. Mott, whose illustrious brewing career spans over 20 years, is renowned for two rather famous beers: the original recipe for Harpoon IPA and Portsmouth Brewery's Russian Imperial Stout, Kate the Great.
For many of you who have been following the progress, we are happy to report that most of the challenges in starting up the project have been met. Renovation of a 1960s era grocery store in Kittery, formerly know as "Dan's Star Market," is nearly complete. It is a welcome addition to Post Office Square, located between Kittery Foreside and the Outlets.
The brewing and cellar equipment is paid for and ready to be delivered. New England Brewing Systems of Gloucester, MA fabricated a four-vessel 15 bbl brew house that will allow Tod to do stepped-infusion brewing to make many diverse styles of beer. The fermentation, conditioning and brite tanks were made by Tigpro, Inc. in Portland, ME. The installation of the equipment is imminent. Then... Let the brewing begin! We are truly hoping for a late June opening.
The model that the we chose to follow is that of many small breweries: a production brewery with a Tasting Room where visitors can sample the beer as well as purchase growlers to go. Tod explains, "There's nothing better than a beer poured on premise. That's as fresh as it gets!"
To begin, Tributary Brewing Co. will self-distribute the beer to local bars and restaurants in Maine. We plan to eventually distribute to a few other New England States, but wish to remain fairly small and local.
"Why then," you may ask, "a Kickstarter campaign?" Funds raised will help to defray the costs of some of the ancillary equipment that may literally save Tod's back (he's no Spring chicken)!
We humbly ask you to consider a pledge towards a successful campaign to purchase a mill & auger system, keg washer, CIP (Clean in Place) system, kegs, and a cute little delivery truck to bring you Tod's beer. Please help us reach our goal of $60,000! No amount is too little or too great. Then, know that your donation will create a watershed moment for Tod's craft-brewed beer because, One Tributary Leads to Another!
Cheers, Tod & Galen
Risks and challenges
Establishing Tributary Brewing Co. has been a complex undertaking. Starting any brewery is! Between finding a good location, renovating the site, funding the brewery and cellar equipment, sourcing the raw materials such as hops, and getting all of the federal, state and local permitting, we have accomplished a great deal. Because of Tod's long history and reputation in the brewing industry, many of those challenges have been met with great support. The biggest obstacle for us has always been time. The build-out has taken longer than we anticipated, but you will see we are doing some really cool things to renovate the old grocery store into a beautiful brewing facility and Tasting Room.
If our Kickstarter campaign is successfully funded, we are hoping the timing will be perfect to have all the bells & whistles pulled together for a late June opening. The worst case scenario is that it will take a little more time… Please know that your contribution will make our dream a reality!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
