About this project
NEW: Stretch Goals
So what's it all about?
Gemini Force One (or GF1 for short) is (initially) a series of books. The concept and story were originally written by Gerry Anderson starting in 2008. GF1 follows the story of a secret organisation involved in rescues and averting disasters and terrorist events.
The long terms aim for GF1 is to publish the book series, then turn it into a film or television series: Gerry Anderson's ultimate goal for GF1!
Gerry was unable to complete the first book due to rapidly worsening Alzheimer's Disease which stopped him working in 2012, before his untimely death in December 2012.
To get the book completed Gerry's younger son, Jamie, has selected best-selling author MG Harris to help complete the first book in the way that Gerry wanted. With the upcoming 50th anniversary of Thunderbirds entering production (2014), we thought it would be the perfect time to release GF1.
Tell me more about GF1
With Gemini Force One, Gerry planned to bring his worlds of action and adventure into the 21st century and into a new dimension - the written word. He hoped to encourage more young people to read and wanted to explore new possibilities offered by a series of novels. A literary narrative gives the reader a chance to get to know characters from the inside, not just outside and looking in as with television.
In the first adventure, BLACK HORIZON, 16-year old Ben Carrington and his mother, an Austrian Countess, join forces with secret rescue agency, Gemini Force. GF is the brainchild of charismatic billionaire Jason Truby, a software and telecoms entrepreneur who became a planetary household name by funding and even joining the first ever manned mission to an asteroid.
High-rise thrills launch the story from the first chapter, as Truby first spots Ben and Countess Caroline in action. But somewhere in the Gulf of Mexico, trouble is brewing on an oil platform. Disaster looms...and only one agency has the speed and technology to respond.
GF1 will explore the human face of disasters, as well as the adventure. Main characters will experience tragic loss too, not just 'non-player characters'.
Why come to Kickstarter?
One of the keys to every Gerry Anderson concept over the last 50 years has been the broad appeal of the concepts, stories, and characters. In the new age of demographics for everything, many content publishers can't seem to find a place for a Gerry Anderson concept in their set of narrowly banded age ranges.
As such, when we've spoken to publishers they want to make (sometime quite drastic) changes to the core concepts in the book... not because they don't like it, but because: "Children just can't connect with characters older than themselves" (yep, that's really what some publishers have said to us!).
But if you've ever watched and enjoyed a Gerry Anderson TV show or film, you'll understand that the characters ages don't matter. You can connect with characters in an Anderson show (be it Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, UFO, Space Precinct or any of the others) whether you're 6 or 106 years old. There is broad appeal built into every Anderson concept, and that's one of the most important things to us... to maintain GF1 how Gerry Anderson wanted it to be. Not pander to anyone else's vision of how it should be.
So that's why we're here. We know that Gerry Anderson fans know and love the great man's work, and that you'll want us to keep this as true as possible to his vision... we can do that, if we reach our funding goal!
Where's the money going?
Independent publishing has become a whole lot easier over the last few years, but it's really important that we do this book series justice.
The money will be used to:
- Have a first run printed!
- Fulfill backer rewards
- Pay MG Harris (the Anderson Estate's author of choice) to complete the book
- Pay a cover designer
- Allow a small amount of marketing and advertising to make people aware of the book's existence
We also have a number of stretch goals in mind, which will allow for things like translation of the book into other languages, recording of an audiobook, vehicles designed by Andrew Probert (Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica) and Dominic Lavery (New Captain Scarlet, James Bond, Jupter Ascending, Event Horizon), and the beginning of serious development towards a film or TV series.
We (Mum and I, as Anderson Entertainment) have stumped up some cash towards making this happen, as has MG Harris - it's several thousand pounds in total. That's our commitment to making this happen, to getting the word out there.
You can probably tell that even to get to this point, having a proper Kickstarter campaign etc, has taken design, video production, etc. etc. However, we won't recoup anything unless the book shows a profit. Kickstarter is a way by which fans can get involved on the ground floor, to show their support and continued desire to see new projects based on Gerry's legacy. We felt it was important to let fans give that kind of active feedback.
I am not taking any sort of fee during or after the campaign, and nor is Anderson Entertainment. We just want to get this book out there! The only way we will ever make any returns from this, if the campaign is a success, would be through future books sales or if a publisher picks the book up at a later date.
But what is Kickstarter?!
Kickstarter is a crowd funding platform. Project creators set a funding goal and deadline. If people like a project, they can pledge money to make it happen. Funding on Kickstarter is all-or-nothing — projects must reach their funding goals to receive any money. Backers are supporting projects to help them come to life, not to profit financially. Instead, project creators offer rewards to thank backers for their support.
Hang on, who's MG Harris?
MG Harris is a best selling author, whose works include The Joshua Files series of books.
As well as being a best selling author, MG is also a huge sci-fi buff, and lifelong Gerry Anderson fan. Of the many authors we spoke to about this project, she is the one that really understood what Gerry Anderson concepts were all about, how to keep it as close to possible to the original idea and , like us, was unwilling to change the core concept to meet "demographic" requirements.
Is this REALLY a Gerry Anderson project?
Yep! It's a true Gerry Anderson concept - developed and written by him between 2008 and 2011, with some additions in 2012. As his Alzheimer's disease worsened, he was less and less able to make solid progress on the first book. MG Harris will use notes and audio recordings made by Gerry to complete the book in the way that he wanted.
Who is this Gerry Anderson guy anyway?
Sometimes people don't know Gerry Anderson by name, but then you start listing his productions and then suddenly people realise they do know of him. Those productions include:
- Captain Scarlet
- Fireball XL5
- Joe 90
- Four Feather Falls
- Torchy the Battery Boy
- The Adventures of Twizzle
- Space Precinct
- Lavender Castle
- New Captain Scarlet
As well as the films: Doppelganger (Journey to the Far Side of the Sun), Thunderbird Six, Thunderbirds are Go, and Crossroads to Crime.
If you don't know any of those, let's just describe him as the UK's Walt Disney or George Lucas!
Tell me more about the rewards
We've got some brilliant rewards for you, if you decide to back us, and these include:
Limited edition collectors postcards - a set of 5 limited edition collectors postcards; 4 of which feature behind the scenes production photographs and screen tests - all from Gerry Anderson's personal archive.
Reproduction AP Films and Pentagon business cards - another special item from Gerry Anderson's personal archive. We have a very limited number of reproductions of Gerry's business cards from AP Films, and it's short-lived predecessor Pentagon Films.
Kickstarter backer editions of the book - unique limited edition versions of Gemini Force One, designed and branded especially for you wonderful backers.
Signed copies - signed by Jamie Anderson and MG Harris
Why is this project important?
As this was one of Dad's final projects, it's so important to me to see this project get out to the fans, and a new generation of potential Gerry Anderson fans who may not be aware of his work. Dad lost control of the majority of his shows in the 60s and 70s, and so never really benefited financially from the cult status that his creations reached. I think a lot of people don't realise that.
I hate to think that these projects might remain unseen, and just sit on a shelf gathering dust, when I know for certain that there are many thousands of fans who will enjoy this fantastic new Anderson creation.
A successful Kickstarter for GF1 will allow us to do this in the best way possible, and produce something that will be an awesome and fitting tribute to the memory of Gerry Anderson, my dad.
One of the best ways to make this project happen (other than pledging!) is to share the link to this page http://kck.st/1cJ7E7k with as many people as possible. Email your friends, put it on your Facebook page, Tweet it, shout it from the rooftops... whatever it takes! The more people that know about GF1 the better the chance is that together we can make this happen, and continue Gerry Anderson's incredible legacy! Thank you
Risks and challenges
With this being the first Gerry Anderson legacy project to be made public, we know that there's a lot of pressure to get this right, and to do justice to his legacy. That's one of the reasons we've got MG Harris involved, and working with Jamie Anderson, we're convinced that they can complete this project in a way that Gerry would have been proud of, and in a way that fans will love.
By choosing the best printing company we can possibly afford, we'll hopefully avoid any print or shipping delays, but we will keep everyone informed about the book and its development at each stage, via the Facebook page, mailing list and Twitter account, and hopefully the GF1 community will continue to build during the run-up to release.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
