What is Super Kawaii Turtle Fighter?
Super Kawaii Turtle Fighter is a local multiplayer fighting game on PC that features turtles with stretchy necks! The game is made for PC while utilizing controllers for the best experience. There are two modes in the game, turtle fight and fruit fight. In turtle fight, players battle their opponent in an arena format filled with harmful and helpful objects. The format for these matches is best two out of three wins. Each round lasts 2 ½ minutes or until one player is completely drained of health. The combat style in the game is a balance of defense and strategic attacks. Players can extend their turtle’s neck to get a better angle for attacking but this leaves them vulnerable to attack by the other player. Players can also use dash mode to get around the arena quickly and take the other player by surprise but this costs stamina so it must be managed wisely. The other mode in Super Kawaii Turtle Fighter is fruit fight which builds on the tactics of turtle fight with an added retrieval element. When a player successfully bites another player’s turtle, a blueberry will be released and they must try to collect that blueberry before their opponent can retrieve it. The player with the most blueberries at the end of the round wins that round. Again, this mode features a best two out of three style win system. In both modes, players can utilize the elements in the environment to their advantage. There are two types of power ups in the game, a health pickup in the form of a strawberry and a stamina pickup in the form of a kiwi. Other elements in the game, however, can be harmful but when used tactically, may be the difference between a win and a loss. For instance, the candy corn in the candy level hurt the player when they collide with them and players can fake out their opponent causing them to boost into the harmful spike.
Why Super Kawaii Turtle Fighter?
The idea for the game, which started out as a student project, came from our fascination with the kawaii art style and local multiplayer in fighting games. We wanted to experiment with controls in fighting games which lead to our interesting use of the controller. In the game, players have to manage extending the neck of the turtle with the right trigger and performing the bite action with the left trigger all while trying to avoid being bit by the other player. This creates a rather satisfying experience for the player when they perform a bite successfully.
Tell Me More About the Turtles
Currently, players can choose between two different turtles, Boxy and Candy. Boxy turtle features a fast stamina recharge rate but has a normal rate of speed. Candy turtle has a faster speed overall but a slower stamina recharge rate. If we reach our goal, we will be able to add Plushie turtle and Woody turtle to the roster. What Arena Environments are there? Right now, there is one environment in the game right now. This environment is based on Candy turtle and takes place on top of a cake with overturned ice cream cones, candy cane spikes, and doughnuts. Talk about a sugar rush! We will be adding on two more levels themed to match some of the turtles’ features if we reach our goal.
Who We Are
We are a pretty small team, we started out with 7 people on the team working on the project for school and since then we have condensed down to 2 members.
We are planning on launching the game on Desura and will be looking into other venues like Steam depending on the success of the project.
Risks and challenges
Game Development can get costly especially for a new company and so Super Kawaii Turtle Fighter is our second job at the moment. Currently, both members are working other jobs to help fund part of the development process which means we can’t work on the game as much as we want to which may cause some delays. We will work extra hard to keep everything on track and so far we have kept to our estimated schedule for progress.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
