About

The Standard Tech Case Files: The Dead and The Damned is the second novel in The Standard Tech Case Files series. The series follows the investigations of Joey Bianco, the Master-at-Arms for vampire baron Isaak ben Jacob and his squire, Jen Ryan. Together, they must navigate a noir-ish world filled with corrupt cops, sleazy politicians, rapacious reporters, brutal gangsters and femmes fatales manipulating everyone behind the scenes. And that's before you get to the vampires, werewolves, kitsune and everybody else who goes bump in the night. It's a world without heroes, where only the ruthless survive.

My plan for writing The Dead And The Damned is simple: during the month of August, while this Kickstarter is running, I will write and re-write the outline for the novel. I typically write between one-two thousand words a day per project, so writing the outline in thirty-one days is no problem for me. Then, in the month of September through to the end of October at the very latest, I will write the first draft. First drafts should top up around fifty-thousand words, and I can easily write that in twenty-five to fifty days. After I'm finished that draft, I'm going to send it to my editor. What she sends back to me will determine how much work I have left to do. First drafts, as anyone can tell you, vary from 'burn before reading' to 'only minor changes needed'. As such, this is the part I cannot control, where the novel is literally in the hands of someone else. However, I will continue to re-write at a pace of one-two thousand words a day and intend to have The Dead and The Damned out by Christmas.

Also after the Kickstarter is finished, I will be using 99Designs to commission an artist to create a cover for the novel. I have worked with them before and have always come away satisfied. Their design contest process only takes about a week and will not delay the project.

The majority of the money from this project will go towards both my editor and getting a book cover. Whatever is left over will go to promotions, the shipping of rewards and the fixing of my previous two book covers so they can be created as actual print books. There is also some cover in there for Kickstarter and bank processing fees.

Risks and challenges

Writing a novel is a difficult, time consuming process. It requires hours and hours of writing and rewriting, of working through colds, the flu, bad night's sleep and more to get it done. More than once, you'll have to scrap everything you wrote start from the beginning to get it right. And then there are things like getting a cover, getting an editor and working through Amazon's occasionally counter-intuitive requirements. To top it all off, I have severe Reynaud's phenomenon, a condition that affects the circulation in my hands and can make it difficult, even painful, to type. All of this adds up, and makes novel writing and publishing a difficult pair of tasks.

I have, so far, overcome these complications twice over. "Robots and Vampires" was published over a year ago and "The Standard Tech Case Files: The Black Coats" just one month ago. I have a good relationship with a professional editor and I have used 99Designs to great effect before. While illness or a bad night's rest may slow me down, they haven't stopped me yet. Indeed, my only serious concern is funding.

I work part time for Ticketmaster as my day job, and they do not pay very well or have consistent shifts. Ordinarily, that's not much of an issue, but due to other considerations it has become one. And even if it hadn't, even self-publishing a novel is expensive. Previously, I've dipped into savings to fund my publishing efforts, but those savings are no longer enough. I need your help. I can't publish without the funds and I do want this novel published.

Once I get the funds, I will write the book. Like I said, I already have two novels under my belt. I can and will write this one, come hell or high water. But I do need help. I can't publish "The Dead and The Damned" on my own, I just don't have the resources for it.

That's why I'm here. Because I can overcome all the challenges inherent in writing a novel. But I can't do it alone.
