Welcome to the Eggbox Terrain Kickstarter for Starscapes. This Kickstarter was born out of a love for a very particular space combat game. Being an active member of the gaming community, I have been fairly disappointed with what was on offer terrain-wise for my games. Coming from a wargaming background, I prefer 3d terrain to cardboard tokens, and in particular, Asteroids. Having looked at the various options available out there, I decided to make my own.
The response from my local gaming scene was good. People asked if I would make them a set. I set about refining my initial set, and doing an XL set, to help with spacial awareness. The standard and XL set are 'reversed' from each other, so that I could cater for all eventualities in placing the tokens. Having studied sculpture in the past, and in particular, casting methods, I figured I would be as well making moulds, and casting up sets for friends. That got me to thinking; if my friends want them, then maybe others do too. And if enough people want them, then maybe I can buy the resin in bulk, and make a load of them for cheaper.
Running simultaneously to this, I couldn't find a mat I liked that was a reasonable price, so I had some of my own printed up. I sourced the images direct from the mighty lenses of Hubble, though I tweaked some of them significantly. Once I had my images, I approached Deep-Cut Studios. Deep-Cut are a European game mat manufacturer, with a wealth of experience in supplying mats for war-games and RPG's. Deep-Cut have agreed to partner with me to produce the mats for this Kickstarter, ensuring that you folks get a high quality product for a budget price. My prototypes are in the images.
Because images on my mats are from the Hubble Space Telescope, I have been given permission by the Space Telescope Science Institute to reproduce the images. Because these images are produced by science, 10% of any profits from the mats will be donated to The Earth and Space Foundation, which is an international charity supporting both space exploration, and environmental sciences.
And that brings us to now. I'm launching this Kickstarter with the hope that I can bring what I believe are high quality products to the community, for a decent price. I've crunched the numbers, and the economies of scale are what will make this project feasible. The £2000 enables me to buy resin in bulk, have the mats printed in bulk, and cover shipping to the U.K. For international readers, my sincere apologies. I wish I didn't have to put an international postage supplement on the products, but sadly, international postage is extremely expensive. I appreciate there are probably cheaper options in your own country.
Without further ado, some images of what I'm offering. The asteroids are cast in high quality yellow resin. They are highly textured to make painting easy by dry-brushing, though there is a painted option for those that just want something they can game with out of the box.
The mats are printed on high quality, heavy duty vinyl. They have a satin finish, and are reasonably 'grippy'. I am initially offering three designs for 3'x3' mats, and two designs for 6'x3' epic play. Further images can be unlocked via stretch goals;
I've had a number of enquiries regarding being able to add to the quick pledges. There is no issue with adding to a pledge, however, for international investors, be aware that if you have pledged for a mat only, and are adding asteroids or vice versa, you will also need to add the postage cost. If you are adding a second mat, then there is no further postage charge. Likewise, if you are adding a second set of asteroids, then there is no further postage charge.
Prices for the add ons are as follows:
Standard Asteroids (unpainted) - add £25 to your pledge.
XL Asteroids (unpainted) - add £27 to your pledge.
Add £15 if you want your asteroids painted.
3'x3' Mat - add £26 to your pledge.
6'x3' Mat - add £38 to your pledge.
6'x4' Mat - add £45 to your pledge.
If you are adding asteroids to a Mat only pledge from outside the UK, please add £6 for postage.
If you are adding a Mat to an Asteroid only pledge, please add £7 for postage.
Because I've made prices as cheap as possible, there will be no 'freebie' stretch goals with this Kickstarter. However, it wouldn't be Kickstarter without some stretch goals, so I do have some plans in case this takes off, and they involve giving you more options.
Stretch Goal 1 - Unlocked at £2500 - ACHIEVED
Stretch Goal 2 - Unlocked at £3000 - ACHIEVED
Stretch Goal 3 - Unlocked at £3500 - ACHIEVED
Reversed Rocks. If we hit £3500, I will offer the Standard Asteroids in a reversed 'mirror image' option. This means that you can get a standard set and reversed set to cover all the options, if you want them all to be the same size.
Stretch Goal 4 - Unlocked at £4000
More Reversed Rocks. If we hit £4000, I will offer the XL Asteroids in a reversed 'mirror image' option. This means that you can get an XL set and reversed set to cover all the options, if you want them all to be the same size.
Stretch Goal 5 - I'll come up with something!
Risks and challenges
I'm confident that the two strands of this kickstarter are low risk. I have agreements in place for the components I cannot make 'in house'. Should either of these deals fall through, I have back-up suppliers willing to supply the parts for a similar price.
With a degree in sculpture, and experience of the casting processes that this Kickstarter entails, I'm eager to get to work. If the worst were to happen, and I somehow ran out of money, I would self-fund the difference from my own pocket; this would take longer to fulfil the orders, but I would not let backers go away empty-handed after pledging support for my idea.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
