About this project
Greetings from the Summer Januaries, and thanks for taking the time to check out our project!
We're a fiddle/guitar vocal duo, two full-time musicians embarking on our first full length original recording, and we hope you'll come along for the journey. We've created all sorts of incentives as rewards for your support, and we invite you to get involved and become a part of it. We're looking forward to sharing our experiences with you throughout the recording process, and we can't wait to get the album into your hands once it's finished.
From our first performance busking at Pike Place Market two summers ago, to the street corners of Italy, and back again, we've been growing, changing, and evolving, as individual musicians, as a band, and as human beings. During this incredibly journey, the songs that will make up this album were born. Looking at our song list, this is literally true--songs written over the past two years, in Ballard, in Bitter Lake, in a hostel in Bologna, Italy, in a guest bedroom in Florida looking over a scrub forest and retention pond below. Walking in Napoli, strolling in Paris. Driving through Montana. We've been playing our music outside, all over Europe and the United states, and now it is time to capture the songs so you can listen to them inside!
We'll begin recording in September, on Bainbridge Island in Seattle. The album will feature some of our best friends and favorite Seattle musicians, including Dave Bush (Golden Tree Story) on drums, Ben Fox (Resonant Rogues) on bass, Kaia Chessen (Cassandra Speaks) on cello, Mitch Ebert (Landlord's Daughter) on banjo and keyboard, and Cynthia Marie (Golden Tree Story) on piano. We'll be working with Grammy-Award winning producer/engineer Tim Franklin (Pillow Army), our long-time musical friend and mentor (who's actually responsible for the two of us meeting. True story!) Our adventure continues in the end of September, when we'll travel on to San Diego, where we'll record the remaining tracks, make the album artwork, and mix the entire project.
The album release will be in San Diego in May of 2014, followed by a 2nd CD release show in Seattle in the summer. We can't wait to bring our album along with us as we tour up the west coast to Seattle, visit our home states of Minnesota and Florida, and travel all around the U.S.
Funds we raise will go towards basic recording expenses, including our engineer/producer, guest musicians, mixing, mastering, and duplication. That being said, the project goal of $3,500 will not cover all costs of the making of this album. We chose an amount that we hope will be attainable to make the project possible, but our actual costs will be much higher, and any amount we raise over $3,500 will go towards these additional expenses and will help make the album that much more awesome.
Throughout the recording process, we'll be sharing our experiences on our website, where you can also read about our adventures over the past year-- http://summerjanuaries.com
and also on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SummerJanuaries
This album is our journey, but it's also our destination.
Love to you all!

Risks and challenges
If busking has taught us anything, it's that uncertainty doesn't have to be scary, and that not knowing exactly how something might turn out can be an opportunity for discovery. We will record these songs in the manner they deserve, and will meet all obstacles with smiles and solutions. Also, popsicles.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
