Harvesting and kittens!

Today we would like to talk a little about our crafting and harvesting system! (We'll get to the kittens further down in the post)

We have gone about this the organic way by allowing the player to plant various seeds that will grow into ammunition for the different characters. We wanted to give the player a base to come back to after each quest, a place to rest and prepare for the next journey.

The idea is to split up some of the character progression elements into object and plants on your home base.

Original Harvesting Concept with Cloud Berries, Goose Barnacles, etc.
Original Harvesting Concept with Cloud Berries, Goose Barnacles, etc.

We want the harvesting gameplay to be fun, engaging, and never become a tedious chore, so we have experimented with setting Gnart, the Hogbunny, to work doing the watering and tending after you’ve planted a seed. This way you won’t have to worry that the spud production grinds to a halt while you’re away. Gnart will handle it, albeit a little more slowly than if you engage directly.

The next idea is that the plants will react to other spudplants that are placed next to them. It’s what we’re describing as a rock paper scissor relationship between plants that like growing next to each other and plants that will hinder each other's growth.

We are also thinking about tying the farming to character progression, like a super slow growing spud that will actually raise a stat. This will give the player more direct control in how their characters evolve, rather than just relying on standard levelling up to raise the stats in a general way. It’s like an ability tree that you can see on your expanding farm field.

A crazy idea, a rapid prototype!

Since we have a world full of magic, we have allowed ourselves to do some crazy stuff. Last week the art team (all cat owners) talked about a cat tree (big scratch post) and Bendik did not know what it was. He took it quite literally and imagined a tree that grew fluffy kittens. Once the general laughter of the subject subsided, one thing led to another and we now have this concept that we would like to get your feedback on:

Presenting the Kitten Tree
Presenting the Kitten Tree

The idea with the cat tree is that it will grow some cute fluffy kittens that can be loaded in your spudgun and fired at enemies for awesome effects! (Disclaimer: No kittens will be harmed during these attacks.)

Charm Offensive - prototype
Charm Offensive - prototype
Charm Offensive - prototype
Charm Offensive - prototype

The attack that we have been rapidly prototyping so far looks like a super powerful attack, but in the end it is only a charm spell as the cute kitten melts the heart of the enemy.

So, awesome backers - what do you think? We want to have humor in the game from time to time, but is this too much? =)

YES put the Cat Ammo into the game! THAT'S my feedback :D It's obvious!

Also, I personally would love to see you guys return to the more top-down camera for the harvesting portion. The down-to-the-ground angle currently there makes it harder to get on top of which plot you want... it's like when Bomberman's early 3D games tried to get too fancy with the camera, and it became hard to tell when you're lined up to NOT get hit with an explosion. Top-down on grids just works best.

    3. Yarow12 on April 9, 2014

By the way, one thing that has bothered me since I've played the previous demo is how overdone the effects are (Protector ability - Revive, Charm Offensive - prototype, etc).

    4. Yarow12 on April 9, 2014

Using animals/bugs/insects as ammunition is a creative idea. Consider making them all debuff/hex ammo.
Whatever you do, keep the game balanced.

I'm fine with shooting kittens as long as it doesn't harm them - maybe you could describe in the game how their fur shields them from damage and getting shot is simply fun to them or something else like that? I know it's "just a game no one is really getting hurt" but still, I think it would be fine like that.

    6. fceramic on April 9, 2014

Funny thing is that we thought it would be the other way around - people finding the Kitten Tree to be a bit grotesque. We never even thought about shooting kittens out of a cannon was anything but awesome. :P

I say kitten shot as described. You can't please everybody so don't try. Plus it's your ideas that made me back you. Stick with your gut.

I'd like to add that I love the idea of the tree growing the kittens :3 Just not the shooting out of cannons part.

Perhaps there could be a separate yarn tree(every colour of the rainbow! :D) that you load the cannon with to send the kittens, harvested from the cat tree, darting off to charm(or bleed, or distract, apparently xD) the enemies!

n__n AOE kittens via catnip bomb sounds awesome!

I think this is a really cool idea! You can do that, and lower the enemys stats, because the kittens are soo cute! And Hex Heroes is also a great!

    13. Brett Morehouse on April 9, 2014

I have two kitties, so I'd like to answer the posed question with my initial reaction.

When I read this update, I had a fit of giddy laughter and immediately stated, "That's freaking awesome!"

The idea of "live" ammunition is always humorous when used in good tasted with a generous helping of "suspension of belief." I like the idea personally, and believe it should be extended to include other animals conferring varied status effects.

Well, so long as your offices can survive the laughter as you come up with further ideas ;)

    14. ☜☆RSF☆☞ on April 9, 2014

I like the idea, particularly the kitten tree, but perhaps taking on-board a suggestion or two so that the kitten itself isn't actually fired out of the gun would be good. Having said that, it does look like fun... :D

    15. Chelle M on April 8, 2014

I just had a thought, what if you had different kittens of different temperaments that did different effects? Like one could charm with adorableness, one could put a bleed/(damage over time on the target), and one could distract the enemy for a turn... something to do with yarn. I don't know. I wouldn't have this random, of course, as it should be a tactical decision.

    18. Snowcastle Games 2-time creator on April 8, 2014

@John: Hehe, I think if it was my cat, it is likely it would just wander off instead, or maybe just sit in the gun and not even bother flying off.

    19. John Redican on April 8, 2014

I like the idea of the Kitten Shot acting to charm targets, but for cat owners your developers haven't taken into account the effect being shot out of a cannon could have on the kittens mood.

What you could do is make the attack into a variable effect like a Schrödinger's cat. Either the kitten would be a loving ball of fur which would melt the heart of your enemies with it's cuteness, or it would be a spiteful hissing ball of claws and teeth which would rip your enemies to shreds. >D

    26. Alex Grow on April 8, 2014

I like the idea. I also think that the yarn idea that was proposed is also good.

    27. Chelle M on April 8, 2014

Okay, I rather adore this update.

EARTHLOCK: Now with 115% more kittens!

    28. Josh "Panda Cub" on April 8, 2014

you could even have different types of yarn ammo like red yarn, blue yarn, green yarn, ect... and the the kitty attack would be different depending on the color of yarn loaded into the gun.

also I really like the idea of a katnip bomb. perhaps throwing said bomb would cause 100's of kitties to attack the targets as an AOE effect.

    29. Gearsoul Dragon

I'm also throwing in my support for the yarn idea! :3

While shooting kittens out of the gun is hilarious and adorable, if you get too many people objecting to it I'd suggest shooting a ball of yarn toward the foes, that the kittens chase and be adorable with (and maybe growing more kittens makes the attack more powerful or something?).
      Thanks for the great update!

    33. fceramic on April 8, 2014

@Erik What about a catnip bomb?

    34. Erik Birger Karlsson on April 8, 2014

I think the Kitten-Tree sounds like an awesome idea! :) Also agree about having kittens walk around the garden that some people mentioned below. That would be A-W-E-S-O-M-E. Adds a little company to the garden. :)

Instead of having the kittens shot out of the gun you could have something; a fish maybe??!! (That fits kittens very well now when I think of it! :D ) shot out of it instead, it lands on the enemy and the kitten gets attracted to the enemy that got hit. You could use the same animation for this as you've used for the kitten getting shot out of the gun (never heard of ultra-quick kittens? -- well you have now! ;) )

Having different animations when the cat attacks a foe would be awesome as well -- like sometimes the kitten purrs, sometimes it licks the enemy or strokes them with their back. Something like that. :)

    35. Jessi on April 8, 2014

I love the idea of the cat tree, very cute! Like some of the other backers, though, I do feel a little uncomfortable shooting a live kitten out of a gun. I like the idea of "summoning" them or "letting them loose" and having the kittens run into battle instead. Even though I can tell that the kitten is unharmed, (and it's also pretty funny), there's still a part of me that kind of feels odd about it.

I think if it was something other than a kitten, it would be okay. (Like in Stranger's Wrath, the live ammunition were all alien creatures). There's just something about kittens... XD

    36. Joachim Bjørne on April 8, 2014

each ball of yarn increases the chance of monster being overrun and pacified xD

    37. Josh "Panda Cub" on April 8, 2014

I think shooting a ball of yarn and having the kitty jump out of your bag to chase it would be better if only to keep the stupid animal rights groups from getting upset.

Also I second the idea of collecting animals that wonder around your base to give it more life than just a patch of dirt

      Kittens! Absolutely!

Gives a whole new meaning to the term 'Live Ammunition'! How about the cutest ever 'Automatic Action': Cute kitten is lobbed out, delivers charm spell and hops back, cute as ever, to reload itself! :-)

    39. Heather Farnsworth on April 8, 2014

I love the idea of growing the kittens on the cat trees! It's more original than attracting them and a good joke you can have from the team.

While I'm not necessarily opposed to the shooting of the kittens out of the spudgun since you can tell they're not harmed in the animation, but maybe having Amon/Ive let loose the kittens of battle and having them run up would be cuter and appease the animal rights groups (they could rain down bad press). It would take more time to code though since you can't just change the "skin" on the ammo that you've already created (assuming that's what you're doing for the ammo in the first place).

    40. Epic Leather on April 8, 2014

I think the Kitten Farm will be a selling point. It's brilliant and I will be very sad if this game doesn't reach funding.

    41. Sebastian Wächtler on April 8, 2014

Kittens in games are always good^^.
But shooting them out of a canon hmm.
Maybe it could be like a special attack where the character makes somthing funny and then the cat appears and attack the enemy with his cuteness.
Cause nobody can resist the cuteness of a Cat :-).
The harvesting idea sounds very interesting and seems to fit very well in this game.
And the Cat-tree..., what should i say..., i will say something when i stop laughing.
So good, the whole (real)world should have cat-trees.

hopefully we reach the goal in the last 3 days.
I want to play this game :-)

    43. fceramic on April 8, 2014

I wouldn't worry about the health of the kitten spuds. They just charm the enemies and then go on with their lives. The initial idea was to just have a cat tree as in a cat scratching tower, that you could grow on your farming field and attract cats. All the animal mutations will cause powerful status effects and will be a fun treat for the player who really delve deep into the farming system.

    44. Thousandone (1001) on April 8, 2014

Er, what is the effect? can let us know about the effect?
I guess prototype wont fix too much on timing right? the shooting timing is a off by half a sec.
But a tree that grew kitten, that is crazy.

Or can try to make this not as ammo, but really as a pet, which u can only shoot 1 time per battle. the logic is that we shoot it, we take it back. not just shoot something alive and finish using it. seem a bit weird to use up living ammo(kitten)

    48. Ayumu on April 8, 2014

While I agree the gif was super cute, my personal opinion is that I'm not comfortable with the idea of launching living creatures out of a cannon even in a cartoonish/magical setting. Maybe instead the cat tree can grow balls of yarn? Then it would attract kittens onto the farm who could be taken along with the party. Amon could shoot the ball of yarn instead and the kitten would run out (from someone's satchel or backpack maybe?) to play with the yarn as the charm attack animation? Just a thought. But definitely put me down as someone who would like the ability to have or collect or attract pets of all sorts onto the island.

    49. Ellery Turner on April 8, 2014

I also have to say I love the kittens idea. As some other said, I think it would be awesome to have some more stuff on the farm too. Kittens walking around and things, even if they don't do anything useful. Anything that adds a bit more life than just a patch of dirt with plants growing in it is always good!
