Announcing the Shouldhavebeen Edition! (PC/XboxOne/PS4)

Earthlock SHB Edition

We are very happy to announce that we will be relaunching Earthlock in Q1 next year. The new version feels in many ways like a new game!

In fact the changes are so big that there was no way we could keep it compatible with existing save games. In order to avoid problems where a patch would void all save games, we have set up a new game in the e-stores: Earthlock.

After we completed the PS4 version in January 2017 we began pre-production of Earthlock2. However, after a few weeks getting super excited about our next game, we realised that we were not comfortable leaving Earthlock: Festival of Magic behind as it was. A lot of the criticism we had gotten on the game by then were things we agreed with. For the initial launch we had to make quite a few cuts during the development and some of those cuts really hurt the story.

Long story short; We decided to make what we ended up internally calling shouldhavebeenedition. That way we could leave Earthlock 1 behind us with pride and begin work on Earthlock 2.

The subtitle Festival of Magic was an old remainder from our first kickstarter campaign and felt obsolete, so we decided to cut that, leaving us with: EARTHLOCK.

So what have we done in the last year?

  • Story: It’s massively changed. Almost from the start. We have added more depth, humor and character to the story and things that did not make sense before now do
  • Crafting: At Plumpet Island, we are happy to report that all buildings on Plumpet now have some kind of functionality
  • Side quests: Yes, there are now side quests - as initially intended
  • Mini Games: Like treasure hunting
  • New scenes and characters
  • New and better animation
  • Improved cut scenes
  • Highly performance optimised
  • And much, much more.

Important to note: Anyone who owns Earthlock: Festival of Magic will get the new game for free (Steam/GOG/PS4/XboxOne). The game is now in final QA and localization and will be published in Q1 2018.

(This is also the version that we will be launching on Nintendo Switch.
Unfortunately we won't be able to publish this version on Wii U.)

Merry Christmas from Snowcastle!

Looking to get this on the PS4, but I'd like to ask if purchasing on Steam or GOG would also include the older version (and its DLC). Other games have done this before (on Steam, it just adds the old game to the Library, even if the store page is down; on GOG, it's included in the "Goodies" listing). It'd be great to keep it available for newcomers or platform swappers to see where development's been (and for Steam, keep trading cards in circulation for a bit more revenue, eh?).

so.. I wonders. Wii U Backers will get the free update in another console, like Switch or we will be thrown to the oblivion?

Will you have everyone gain experience regardless of whether currently in the party? From the original, the grind was real to catch people up so they didn't suck.

Also, can switching modes not waste a turn, please?

I agree with Neo: Please keep the subtitle and just call it "Earthlock: Festival of Magic - Enhanced Edition".

It worked for the console releases of Divinity: Original Sin.

I think "Earthlock: SHB Edition" sounds not so good!

"Earthlock: Festival of Magic - Enhanced Edition" sounds much better. :)

@Nithrock: Yes, we will keep our promise.

@Steven: Apologies for not informing you properly about the WiiU key.

@Josh: WiiU users has been promised a Switch key. Please contact support.

@Matthew: All XboxOne users who own Earthlock: Festival of Magic will be able to download the new version free of charge.

@Patrick: Still only max 4 in combat, but you can change your combat team through the menu. Both which four to use and who to pair up. Different pairing gives different perks.

@Dell: Organic crafting is still in, but you no longer need the special ammo to progress.

I hope the plan is for the revamped version to launch with (way overdue) Linux support.

I said wow. Sounds amazing, and the funny thing is that I still haven't played this despite being a day zero believer... Strange how life works sometimes :D Thank you Snowcastle :)

Is there a Wii U code ? I never got one....last note I saw is that there was a last minute bug and then nothing more.

Is this new version going to be getting a physical release like the original version did? Specifically, will the switch version be coming out on a physical cart at some point, or will it be digital only? Thanks.

@Snowcastle can you please confirm if you are still following through with your promise that all Wii U backers will also get a switch copy? (from update #65)

    20. Steven B on

The last update we got was the following for the U:

      Wii U launch on:

      Thursday, Sept 7th (EU territory)
Thursday, Sept 14th (USA - expected but not certain)

All of a sudden the USA version released and you never told us?

I have yet to get the code for the WiiU version that I wanted when I backed this. I have waited for it in ages. Have I missed it? Can I get it on Switch instead of WiiU, or do I have to buy the game? (Eventhough I backed enough to get it on WiiU).

    22. Khoi Minh Vo on

Nice! I've actually barely had time to even play the game beyond the first area so I'll just get to play it as it was intended :)

    23. Josh "Panda Cub" on

@Josh you might want to use the Contact KS Project link to message them directly regarding your Wii U version question.

    24. Josh Broccolo on

Um, if the update isn't going to be pushed to Wii U, can I get a Steam key for the update, or am I just out of luck with the new version if I backed for the Wii U version of the game?

    25. Matthew Baldo on

How does this affect those of us on Xbox who got the game through Games with Gold? Will it transfer over or will we need to buy a new copy?

Thanks and looking forward to hearing more in future.

is there changes for the combat and especially the team? I was put off that you can only play with 4 characters with 6 available and there was no possibility to choose which you wanted to play with (and Pat the robot was mostly useless)

    29. Dell Goodman on

Would love a Nintendo Switch copy, I had originally changed my key from the Wii U to the PS4 as at the time it was a dying console. But didn't think picking the Switch was an option.

My only issue with Earthlock is the planting system, I did most of the game without needing it until there was one point in the story where you had to grow a level 3 or 4 item and that took a good while to catch up.

Hopefully this gets worked on in #2, or scrapped altogether. As it didn't feel like a needed system.

      Kieran Jones on

@Snowcastle Just to clarify I meant would we be able to request keys for the Switch version of the new game instead of recieving a key for the console that we got the original game for?

Again I expect the answer to be no but if you don't ask you don't get.

But yes I will definitely consider getting the game on Switch to support the sequel.

    31. Klais on

That's awesome news can't wait to try it out, if you guys decide to use kickstarter again for Earthlock2 I would not mind backing again :D.

    32. Justin Passmore on

Oh wow, this is great news! I ended up beating the game earlier this year and I thought it was really solid. Yes the story and some other mechanics were rough, but the battle system was fun and strategic. I remember hoping for a sequel because the first serves as a great foundation gameplay wise. So I'm glad to hear that not only will there be a sequel, but the original is getting an overhaul!

      Hello!

I never did finish this one, so this will be a fun way to complete it. How will the campaign extras (alt. costumes, etc.) work with Earthlock?

      Kieran Jones on

Excellent news. Unfortunately I never actually got round to playing Festival of Magic on my PS4, I think I was put off but its mediocre reception, so hopefully I can get round to playing this much better version.

This may be cheeky of me to ask but is there anyway that we would be able to swap our free Earthlock codes, on PS4, Xbox, or PC, for a Switch code instead? It was never a part of the original campaign, so I am expecting no, but I imagine many people will be requesting it.

    41. Mike Foster on

Are we still waiting for the Wii U codes to be released ? I haven't received a code yet
